"Ad hoc legal approach for fighting terrorism that was neither effective nor sustainable"

Obama made the astounding assertion that the Bush administration was ineffective at fighting terrorism.

Did I sleep through acts of terrorism in the United States after 911?

The freedom from terrorists in post 911 America as a result of aggressive policies and proactive defense of our country's liberties from the Bush Administration somehow escaped Barack?

I'm not buying it.

At about 2:20 in the youtube,Obama announces that because there are some people who will never be able to be prosecuted for crimes because in some cases evidence may be tainted but who nonetheless pose a threat to the security of the United States - he proposes prolonged preventive detention plan.

Wait a minute....wasn't this his gripe about GITMO?

I'm confused.

Obama goes on to say that "we must do this with an abiding confidence in the rule of law"

What rule of law and civil liberty imprisons people without evidence in order to prevent them from committing crimes?

He says his "administration begun to reshape standards that apply to ensure they are in line with the rule of law...we must have clear, defensible and lawful standards for those who fall into this category"

I guess that would not be the innocent until proven guilty category.

Obama continues with the ideas of the White House wizards:

"We must have a thorough process of periodic review so that any prolonged detention is carefully evaluated and justified"

If they're carefully evaluated the evidence and it's insufficient for a trial - Periodically reviewing it as you detain them can never be justified.

"goal - construct alegitmate legal framework for remaining GIMTO detainees that cannot be transferred. Goal is not to avoid a legitimate legal framework. In our constitutional system, prolonged detention should not be the decision of any one man. If and when we determine that the United States must hold individuals to keep them from carrying out an act of war, we will do so with judicial and congressional oversight...going forward, my administration will work with congress to develop an appropriate legal regime so that our efforts are consistent with our values and our constitution."

He's going to develop a legal regime?

A regime , as the MSNBC correspondent notes will be outside of the courts and outside of the military system so that you can indefinitely imprison people without charges and you will build this regime from scratch.

Breathtaking.

Is this the same guy who made assertions that Cambridge police responding to a 911 call and asking for identification were acting "stupidly" and racist?

While Bush was President WWJT was a constant concern: Who Would Jesus Torture.

There is no defense of Bush whatever you think of Obama

That is a straw man. I'm not talking about George Bush or torture.

This is about the legality of holding a prisoner indefinitely without evidence, creating laws to suit Obama's fancy and a "regime" to imprison these people outside of the courts and the military.

Obama ran his campaign saying he wanted to shut down GITMO and hauled in civil rights activists to make a fugatz about the rights of the innocent people our military were rounding up for no good reason - according to him.

Anonymous,

Torture is decapitating infants alive and withholding medical treatment - wiping out their constitutional right to live by tearing their limbs and body from their body alive.

Forgive me, but comparing this inhumane monster to a president who preserved our nation's sovereignty by holding prisoners in GITMO and extracting information from them in any way he could when he knew they held information is yellow-bellied. I can see why you don't sign your name.

It remains unseen as to what techniques this president is using to extract information from the terrorists George Bush told him were at GITMO.

I would suggest that if a terrorist bomb kills your son and you find out later that Obama knew the criminals at GITMO had the information but were withhold it, you'd feel differently about justifying fluffing the pillows for the prisoners at GITMO.

Time will tell what Obama is doing. What we do know now, is that he acknowledges that GITMO is filled to the rafters with threatening people our heroes in the military have imprisoned and he spent his election campaign making that ugly.

God Bless.
