Healthcare Bill

I was enjoying a weekend down the Cape with 5 of my high school friends (I went to an all-girls Catholic high school in Boston)this weekend and missed most of excitement.

The "Bishops" are reportedly giving their approval to the Bill that passed as completely prolife. Supposedly, coverage for abortions was thrown overboard (except for private insurance companies) to get the Bill passed.

Does this make Cardinal O'Malley the only Catholic Cardinal whose business deals are lucrative for abortionists and death sentences for children?

"The bishops' stamp of approval means that this bill is unambiguously pro-life and we will vigorously oppose those who suggest otherwise," the conference said in a statement Saturday.

What an interesting statement. It's unambiguously pro-life and they'll vigorously oppose anybody who suggests otherwise. Well, as much as I'd like to take comfort in their conclusion, I'm reserving judgment until we can scratch below the surface. I don't think Cardinal George would have signed off on this but just the same, we've been lied to for far too long about far too much had to learn how to protect our own by doing our own diligence.

I want to be happy about this prolife victory but I can't believe they'd throw Planned Parenthood under the bus and I'm deeply concerned about the quality of health care, the waits for treatment, the denials of treatment and the price tag that is going to bankrupt the country.

If the Bill has federally protected federal funding for abortions, the USCCB last minute flurry was indeed effective, as infant butcher Fran Kissling duly notes here.

The question so many are asking today is: How did we end up with a House bill on health insurance reform that dramatically undercuts abortion rights? After all, we have a pro-choice president who supports public funding of abortion, a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, a Democratic party platform that supports choice and public funding, support for overturning the Hyde Amendment in the major Jewish and Christian denominations, and national polls that tell us that most Americans—including Catholics—believe that health insurance should cover abortion service.

Fingers are immediately pointed at the Catholic bishops and there is no doubt that the lobby that exerted the most effort and probably money to defeat the inclusion of insurance for abortion services in the reform was the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Their lobbyists have been on the Hill every day urging support for the Stupak Amendment and in the final hours they pulled out all the stops sending a bulletin to 19,000 parish churches across the US calling on those at Sunday mass to lobby in favor of excluding coverage for abortion services....

It was a knock out, a one-two punch. The bishops hit women hard, right in the belly and the coup de grace was the slap in the face from the anti-choice Democrats. Violence against women should come as no surprise.

And so, early Sunday morning women were treated to the spectacle of the Democratic pro-choice president and the Democratic congressional leaders all smiles at the historic passage of a house bill authorizing modest but important reforms in health insurance. No one had the decency to note that it was accomplished—as much social progress has been for centuries—by limiting women’s reproductive freedom. Now there’s a moral crusade gone awry.

How do you contort dismembering your own child alive into the Bishops performing violent acts by hitting women in the belly?

Mothers bringing their own child to the "doctor" to be exterminated is what it is. They're not the victims in the procedure nor victims of the latest blows to right to kill and have Catholics and people of good will to become an accessory to the murders by paying for it.
