Liz Taylor Dies at 79

I've met a lot of people in my life who are really, really brilliant or over-the-top talented in some way or breathtakingly beautiful.

Some of them political or theological leaders. Others cross my life in other venues. Sometimes there's a tornado there. A rollercoaster ride.

My mother often quoted a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay that to me, always captures these people:

My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—
It gives a lovely light!

Liz Taylor (of course) was a public tornado. What a breathtakingly beautiful woman. In reading her obits today, I was struck by the number of losers she was attracted to and the hot water she got herself into. Like a moth to the flame.

I didn't realize that the Holy See released a message directed at her saying she was guilty of erotic vagrancy. (John XXII?) Can you imagine?

When actors and actresses who are a bridge to our parent's generation die, a little bit of something slips away. I don't even really have to feel particularly attracted to the personalities. I just remember growing up sitting on the beaches every Summer with my Mom and favorite Aunt reading the newspaper and commenting about the antics of all these characters -- much like we do now. A lot of that chatter planted seeds. I miss them, miss the chatter. In some ways I want to pick up the phone and talk about the death...and their memories.

Taylor was in the hospital for six weeks, according to the stories. I hope she prepared, found her way to Our Lord, to pardon and peace.

My Jesus Mercy.

I definitely recall that. The Vatican also condemned Sophia Loren as a public sinner at the time. Things have certainly changed today.

Wow - really. That must have really been something.

I feel so blessed there was at least some form of it still going down as we grew up. That rock solid foundation is there to crawl back to, even when everything we are gets blown away in a storm.

It's so sad to see Catholics being robbed.

I have a question for anyone who would like to answer.

Here is a woman that had everything - beauty, talent, fame and fortune. Does she get Heaven too despite her eight marriages and myriad of lovers? Heaven in this life AND the next?

We don't know that answer, Anonymous, and there's no reason to speculate on the answer to that. I am troubled by the undue attention paid to people simply because they're successful entertainers who are physically attractive and/or fabulously wealthy. What on earth does that say about our own values? What about the 3000+ babies who were murdered between the time Taylor died and now? Yes, let's pray for the woman, but no more than we might pray for some unnamed saint or sinner who happened to pass at the same moment as did she.

Well, gee, RestoreDC, I already know that, but thanks for the sermon anyway. You sure made a lot of assumptions about me from an innocently asked question which, by the way, bears my name...

Veronica,

It was my impression Janet was giving me a tongue lashing for focusing on it - something I think you both share.

I share my thoughts about the culture and public dramas because I observe them as a blown up version of the things in our own lives - a Poseidon we've met somewhere along the way.

I know these reflections annoy some of you - -and I'm sorry about that!

Carol, whatever gave you the impression that the Liz Taylor piece annoyed me?

All I wanted to know is what others thought - does she get everything in this life (as far as it is possible...I know she didn't have a perfect life) and the next as well?

Veronica,

I was just speaking generally, the cultural stuff I write about is not on the top of your favorites - not Liz in particular.

You ask a good question. I wouldn't mind a production line of husbands and still getting into Heaven. LOL. Just kidding.

I think if I did it, Christ would know that I knew better - so I'd probably end up in lowest level of Hell. Sometimes, when I watch others, I think there's something not right in the hat rack -- and perhaps Christ will not hold them to the standards.
