The Humble Capuchin: The Artful Dodger's Adventures and Ad Hominems

I apologize for the light blogging. Most blogs are people who use their talents to comment on theology and politics. While I do that here too, I'm really an activist with a blog which means the bulk of my work is done behind the scenes. You'll see a pattern if you read here. When something scandalous is going down and is posted here, the radio silence that follows means what time I have is being devoted to direct contact with the parties, with other Catholics, and disclosing and communicating what is going on to the Nuncio and the Holy See. Articulating our requests/expectations for intervention, etc.

There is a pervasive pattern of responding to scandal in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Chanceries across the USA.

They first try sweetness and flattery. They want you to be their friends. You are so smart, you see, they need you to serve on some committee. Your valuable insights and fidelity will be trumped on every policy because they've stack the committees with people who oppose Church teaching of course, but in the meantime, they've silenced your voice in the public square.

If the complaints are physical or spiritual abuse, they will throw money at you. The money comes piggybacked with a confidentiality agreement to get you to sit down and shut up.

When all tried and true tactics fail, they malign and slander. This is memorialized in the Archdiocese of Boston's public relations campaign in response to complaints of the spiritual abuse of parishioners at St. Cecelia's by Fr. John Unni.

The worst of the statements is here in this Lifesite article:

The spokesman also shot back at criticism of the archdiocese’s handling of the situation from Catholics on the blogosphere.

“I’m not going to let these people attack the Cardinal’s integrity nor his 40 plus years of priesthood,” said Donilon, defending O’Malley’s record defending the unborn and marriage, and calling the attacks “outrageous and disgraceful.”

“This isn’t about defending Catholicism, this is about hurting, defaming, denegrating people, and speaking mistruths, and manipulating words and positions of the cardinal and archdiocese. I think they’re malicious,” said Donilon.

As Judie Brown pointed out here, Catholics who want Church teaching promulgated are quite accustomed to Cardinal O'Malley's character assassinations.

There is no difference between this current situation and the problematic nature of the sale of a string of Catholic hospitals to Cerberus Capital Management with the agreement that the hospitals could easily drop their Catholic credentials with a $25 million payment (payoff) to the archdiocese.

Clarity of Catholic teaching has somehow evaded the Archdiocese of Boston in the wake of its efforts to placate the world and its expectations rather than fostering a spirit of healing to those who are troubled and confused.

The nice, kind, humble, pastoral Capuchin once again uses his media relations to characterize complainants as no good so and so's.

Thank you for writing to me expressing your concerns/prayers. I appreciate them and use them. But I don't want you to ever be concerned that these tactics have (or will) intimidate me. I'm out here as a witness. I'm here to remind them (and you) that my allegiance is to God and the Church He left to serve souls for the benefit of our salvation.

What they say bounces off of me like a flea on a dog that's been treated with frontline.

I have written to Mr. Donilon, the Cardinal, his secretaries, his lawyers, the Nuncio and the CDF and told them, and in no uncertain terms, it is my expectation that they cease and desist from using intimidation tactics by characterizing people this way.

Additionally, I shot a flare across their bow that was quite specific on what kinds of things they are to restrain Fr. Unni vis-a-vis his screwball intimidation and slander tactics. We'll see what happens.

There is an excellent set of ten questions posted at BHE that exposes the fundamentals of the artful dodging the Cardinal is doing to cover up and protect Fr. Unni's long history of spiritual abuse at St. Cecilia's which has been laid out on the internet over the past several weeks.

Rescheduling the timing of a Mass they claim was simply a Mass open to all parishioners is a ridiculous and deceptive ruse. The problem with the Archdiocese is, they have never had the good sense to surrender their lies at the foot of the Cross until they are completely discredited by the truth. The handwriting is on the wall but they are too consumed with their charades to read it and recognize its warning.

There's an art to living a life of lying by omission and the commission of ad hominems when somebody reveals your lies. The Boston Archdiocese is the crown jewel of that kingdom.

We have arrived at this desolate place in Catholic history because priests and prelates deprived a generation of Catholics the deposit of our teachings to avoid conflicts with people offended by them.

Cardinal O'Malley is advancing us from the deprivation to the next stage, overtly misleading the flock with false teaching and maligning, intimidating, slandering Catholics who are publicly exposing the chaos of his misfeasance and malfeasance.

This is an on-going story. Boston bloggers have another story cooking on what the Archdiocese does to people who proclaim Church teaching, so stay tuned.

As promised, here's a spectacular editorial that was published in this week's edition of the Fall River Anchor on the pastor care at St. Cecilia's and the Archdiocese of Boston.

Fr. Landry is a priest who will take any soul on that he feels is derailing. Nevermind the courage to take on a Bishop, *I* have been on his radar more than once in my public ministry. That's what you call valor! His demeanor is forthright. He doesn't just drop a hint, or say what he feels he needs to say as a priest. When you try to defend yourself, he stays in the ring. Goes above and beyond to try to get you to see it. A lover of souls and salvation... and a royal pain when you don't want to hear it. :)

His introductory paragraph summarizes the problem quite well:

The ongoing controversy at St. Cecilia’s Church in Boston over the scheduling, postponing and re-theming of a Mass originally planned to celebrate Boston’s gay “pride month” has brought to the surface issues that extend far beyond the boundaries of one parish or archdiocese. The controversy touches not only on the subject of the pastoral care of the Church toward those with same-sex attractions, but on the much larger matter of the purpose of the Church’s pastoral care to anyone and everyone: Whether the Church, her priests and parishes will faithfully, lovingly and courageously care for people with the fullness of the Gospel; or whether her ministers and ministries — perhaps out of too much fear to give offense, a lack of faith in the teachings of the Church, or a faint-hearted notion of what true love demands — will dilute the Gospel of its saving power by stripping it of the uncomfortable and countercultural teachings that some listeners most need.

Here, he disabuses the artful dodgers of the notion that we can't see what they are doing:

Cardinal O’Malley’s intentions to dissociate the Mass from “gay pride,” however, sadly haven’t succeeded, as many members of the parish and of the media have continued popularly to refer to the Mass as a gay pride Mass. Those who have ceased to draw explicit attention to the connection with gay pride have continued, however, to use coded language — “a welcoming Mass” — to communicate that supporters of the gay agenda do not have to worry about being made to feel uncomfortable at the Mass over the incompatibility of the gay agenda with Church teaching. The expression “welcoming Mass” now being employed to refer to the July 10 liturgy does not mean merely that people will be received with genuine Christian hospitality. Like the expression “welcoming parish” used in various places (such as the 200 “gay friendly” parishes promoted by pro-gay websites), it’s a euphemism that communicates to those who may be living in objective discordance with the teaching of Jesus and the Church —like those engaging in the gay lifestyle, living in irregular marriages, cohabitating, undergoing in-vitro fertilization, or actively supporting the practice of abortion, gay marriage or other practices contrary to the faith — that not only will they never have to hear a peep about any of these unpleasant topics, but very likely neither will they hear anything suggesting the necessity of concrete conversion, confession, and of being in doctrinal, sacramental and moral communion with Christ and his mystical Body the Church in order to receive Jesus worthily in Holy Communion....

Do read this treasure of an editorial in its entirety. Fr. Landry says he'll be writing more on the pastoral conundrum next week which I'll be sure to link here at TTC.

The Cardinal has been given documentation that Fr. Unni has not just been depriving his parishioners of Church teaching to make them feel at ease, he has been leading them to rebel against Church teaching and further, heckle it should it be proclaimed. The Cardinal has clarified that this kind of pastoral care has his 'full confidence' and 'support' and he has referred to Fr. Unni as a great pastor.

Since the Cardinal is not ignorant of Fr. Unni's methods of making people feel comfortable, and since he is aware that every Mass ever said in the history of the Catholic Church in every parish across the planet earth welcomes all parishioners and the wider community, there is no other conclusion to draw but that Cardinal O'Malley is on board making people feel comfortable by not only depriving them, but with training them to rail against Church teaching.

I'll leave you with a beautiful reflection written by St. Gregory of Nyssa to remind you of what is being stolen from our brothers and sisters at St. Cecilia's and other Catholics:

…If you draw from him the thoughts in your mind and the inclinations of your heart, you will show a likeness to Christ, your source and origin, as the gleaming water in a jar resembles the flowing water from which it was obtained.

“For the purity of Christ and the purity that is manifest in our hearts are identical. Christ’s purity, however, is the fountainhead; ours has its source in him and flows out of him. Our life is stamped with the beauty of his thought. The inner and the outer man are harmonized in a kind of music. The mind of Christ is the controlling influence that inspires us to moderation and goodness in our behavior. As I see it, Christian perfection consists in this: sharing the titles which express the meaning of Christ’s name, we bring out this meaning in our minds, our prayers and our way of life.”

Carol, you are a brave soul. If I ever did in my diocese what you are doing in yours, I'd be tarred and feathered and relegated to being a "home aloner". The Archdiocese of Boston is large enough to absorb you; my small diocese, alas, is not.

God bless you Carol, and may Our Blessed Mother give you and your family a special grace or two on this Feast of Her Immaculte Heart! Same to all here - you know who you are!!!

Joseph,

I appreciate your faithfulness to Our Lord but you've got to be more careful about the comments you leave here. I know the phrase 'they should be shot' is in the hyperbole category and you don't mean it literally - but the internet is a place where you can't control how messages like that are received. Nobody really takes it seriously but it scandalizes the actual message we want to get across because it gets taken out of its silly context and characterized by the National Catholic Reporter types as proof we are the Taliban.

We say and do what we do out of concerns for those around us falling from grace and the gift of salvation. As much as we see the consequences of their abuse and neglect, that includes the Cardinal and this F Troop of Chancery empires. The buffoonery is a pathetic confirmation that they are not operating by Grace, a public indictment of the state of their souls.

How about tar and feather?

Wouldn't it be rather duplicitous of me to be indignant about tar and feather?

Veronica,

The Boston blogging community has a different way of characterizing the call to accountability.

We say: "Pin it on him".

LOL.

I think Joseph is spot on. There is nothing wrong with eating chancery apparatchiks for lunch. A good pesto sauce and a nice Nero d'Avola -- quite a satisfying colazione di lavoro, mi sembra. Good time to discuss repair of the Church, as St. Francis (remember him, Eminenza?) was instructed by Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo.

Maybe Fr. Unni will schedule a Mass of Welcome for the Cannibal community. Recipes to be exchanged at the reception to follow.

It is very inspiring to know that Brooks Drive is actively promoting cultural, sexual and culinary diversity. I will recommend St. Cecilia's to the lovely necrophiliac couple on the next street who are looking for a welcoming parish. They never miss a funeral mass.

Veronica: She is the best, isn't she? God love you, Carol. This really was a great post.

God Bless the Padre! When priests and Bishops and Cardinals stop being politicians who are more interested riches and ambition than proclaiming the Gospel, all of this will cease. Fr, Hardon tells us: "WHERE PRIESTS ARE ZEALOUS, THE PARISHONERS ARE STRONG IN THEIR ALLEGIANCE TO CHRIST”. Hardon quotes Pius XIl “Opposition from the outside is terrible; it gives us many martyrs. But the Church’s worst enemy is her own traitors.”

The Padre is right about one thing. This is way more than about one parish. It is about the timidity of men who seek vainglory and power instead of Jesus Christ crucified.

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus…preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. For the future will come when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to satisfy their own likings and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry”(II Timothy 4:1-5).

Oh, Jack. LOL. Fr. Clooney SJ of Harvard, refers to orthodox Catholics as "cannibal Catholics". Fr. Looney, so very, well, pastoral, hmmm? See we are the "hate mongers". Guilty of "hare speech", soon we won't be able to have these conversations. We will all be jailed for speaking the truth, just like the early Christians...Oh, but this time, it seems our priest will usher us to our cells...

TTC said...

The days when the archdiocese had the credibility to tar and feather anyone are gonzo. They are only revealing and discrediting themselves.

Jacko, Will you be on hand at the welcome fornicators Mass?

A Mass of welcoming for cannibals and necrophiliacs...you may be onto something there. And, who are we to exclude pornographers?

Maria said...

I suggest a Mass for NAMBLA in honor of, you know, "man/boy love".

Anonymous said...

And the truth is, not a one of you will be there. All talk you are. To equate practicing homosexual Catholics who love the Church and who contribute so much to the parish, the Archdiocese, and the less fortunate in our midst to necrophilia, etc. shows how horrible you people are. You all should be ashamed. And seriously, I would be careful judging...our Lord was very clear on that.

Jerry said...

Anon, is that "practicing homosexual" or "practicing Catholic"?

You're right, I wouldn't get within a mile of St. C's. And I'd never equate sodomy with necrophilia. The former kills two souls while the latter only one.

TTC said...

Maria, I don't think they belong at the welcome fornicators Mass.

Shouldn't criminal sexual offenders have their own special welcoming Mass? After all, they are just as welcome as the rest of us, perhaps even more so.

How will they know they're invited unless we offer a special Mass of welcoming for them?

I still wonder where the Mass is for maligning, malicious, defaming degenerates is celebrated.

You know, the sad thing is, gays and lesbians know what the Catholic Church asks of them. Deep down, they know Fr. Unni is operating a parish that is out of communion with the Catholic Church.

To the people in the pews who have been coming for the last decade, who know what the Sacraments are and are striving to stay in a state of Grace, based upon Church teaching...what the Cardinal's charade has revealed is a dishonest man incapable of disciplining his priests is at the helm. A man willing to give up the salvation of hundreds of thousands of souls to protect his priests. A man who will put on a dog and pony show to cover the tracks and who will slander and malign and intimidate people who sees what he is doing. He has lost the respect of the 300,000 of us coming and going, daily, some of us. We cut off the money and the ship takes on more water.

He wants a fight for the deposit of faith? He's going to get it.

TTC said...

Jerry, I think you bring out a good point. We can use examples to show how asinine it is to displace the Celebration of the Sacrifice of Christ's Execution and Resurrection with any kind of celebration for sexual sins - but don't want to undermine that the Catholic Church is the hospital for sinners and all are indeed welcome and always have been.

The irony of the whole thing is, the Cardinal has just excluded every parish in the diocese from this reality to make Fr. Unni's 11 am Mass the one and only Mass where they are welcome.

In the end really doesn't give a rat's backside what happens to any of us, especially gays and lesbians - so long as he covers the tracks of his ineptitude and cowardice.

Anonymous said...

So, Carol, will you be there next Sunday? I didn't think so. This story is over.

TTC said...

I am invited aren't I? I wouldn't miss it for the world. In fact, I'm going to write Fr. Unni and ask him to meet with me on that day. I have a thing or two to tell him and he hasn't been man enough to return my phone calls.

This "story" is over? Really? You think so?

First of all, we don't see it as a 'story'. This is a call to respond to the promises made at the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation - to ensure the deposit of faith is passed on to our children.

And, let us face it. The content of Fr. Unni's 'ministry' has been deleted from the St. Celilia's website. He is under the microscope. There are going to be some dramatic changes at St. Cecilia's.

These changes may not be followed in a 'story'. I think we're all in agreement that we'll all make out better if it were not followed in the public square.

God bless.

Anonymous said...

First of all, I can assure you that you will not be given an audience with Fr. Unni. He would never speak with you. I promise you that. I also don't believe that there will be any changes at St Cecilia. They have the full support of the Archdiocese and Fr. Unni is a friend of the hierarchy. Don't you think that the hierarchy just sees you as a nuisance and a crazy person? I think they do, Carol. So, no changes will be coming. Lastly, what do you mean, " I think we're all in agreement that we'll all make out better if it were not followed in the public square?" So, you might indeed attend that liturgy, but you will be quiet, you will go unnoticed, you will not be granted an audience with Fr. Unni, and you will go home to blog about your less-than-exciting morning. What you will see, however, is a packed church full of people who are proud to belong to a community such as St. Cecilia...a parish that preaches Gospel love and outreach. You will also experience some very good liturgy and some excellent preaching. And, if you dare to stay for the reception following the Mass, you will have some very nice food and drink to sustain you on your way.

Anonymous said...

"There are going to be some dramatic changes at St. Cecilia's."

Highly unlikely, Carol. Things will continue as always. The only changes are that St. Cecilia's has attracted many new parishioners because of all the press coverage. It's been a great thing for the parish.

Anonymous said...

Carol, if you do come next Sunday, please bring a tray of brownies or something to share during the reception. Seriously. It would be the Christian thing to do. My prayer for you is that you have a conversion experience and see how your heart is full of malice and hatred and that you will perhaps decide to repent and even join St Cecilia Parish and publicly apologize for your un-Christian ways. I mean all that. That would be great, Carol. You are in my prayers.

TTC said...

I'm going to assume that you are not even really a parishioner because the 'changes' began several weeks ago - when he deleted all the content of the rainbow ministry blog. The Mass was cancelled and it's been properly scheduled as just a regular Mass that 'welcomes all'. Same as every Mass in every parish in every town across the USA.

Fr. Unni 'grants' audiences? LOL. He is too big for his britches. He is a priest and a pastor, nothing more. He will speak to me, even if I have to ambush him. A priest doesn't get to slander people and get away with it.

We are all well aware that Fr. Unni is a 'friend' of the 'hierarchy' and they are protecting him. But there is a hierarchy above 66 Brooks Drive. What you don't realize is, there is that the Cardinal and Bishop Hennessey are looking to advance within 'the hierarchy'. We can make it very, very difficult for them to do so.

Let us agree that their own aspirations are even more important than the money and power outside of the hierarchy. This is what these people are about.

Let us also agree that everyone I know of would be delighted to see more people at St. Cecilia's, even though Fr. Unni is an obstacle for the people in the pew to see God, it is one step closer to a journey.

Let us see how it plays out.

In Christ and Happy Fourth of July.

TTC said...

Though Fr. Unni has cultivated his parishioners to believe that Catholics who want the faith taught are people filled with 'malice' for gays and lesbians or any other kind of sinners, what he has been actually doing is manipulating your emotions. He has been lying to you. In every conceivable way.

The easy way or the hard way, Fr. Unni is going to cease and desist from characterizing everyone in the Archdiocese except for him in this way. He is going to be restrained from doing so. It's the end of the road for that kind of slander from him. I don't care who he thinks will protect him at 66 Brooks Road. If he wants to find out the hard way, game on.

TTC said...

A tray of brownies?

Are you sure? I am blessed to know numerous gays and lesbians and the last thing they eat is that kind of stuff, especially in the morning.

They're much more into healthy foods.

How about a fruit tray?

Karen said...

Anonymous,
I'm not clear as to why Fr. Unni would not speak to Carol. If all are welcome, why would he NOT speak to her? Were I to attend a mass only to have the priest avoid me and/or not allow me to engage in authentic Catholic doctrine diologue, I would not feel welcome. At least for the sake of truth, please be honest and say that really, all are welcome so long as they do not express the objective Catholic doctrine that homosexual sexual activity (or any sexual activity outside of marriage for that matter) is a mortal sin and that one should not present him/herself for Communion unless that sin has been confessed. I'm thinking that since this is my view, I would not be welcome in your Church if I was honest about that view. That is truly sad to me, because I value truth and could not be silent about expressing it. To think that I could be unwelcome in any Catholic community is something that I never thought I would see in my lifetime. I guess that this is my new reality.

TTC said...

Karen,

I would like to know myself why Fr. Unni is refusing to speak to me.

The messages I have left for him have made clear that his proclamation that Catholics across the diocese do not want gays and lesbians to worship with us is a grave misunderstanding and is doing a disservice to all of us.

You seem to be in the know anonymous - please enlighten us. If you had been spreading rumors about your fellow Catholics and they called you and asked you to meet with them to correct your misunderstanding, why would you avoid them? Especially if you were a priest?

TTC said...

Fudge Brownies?! They may indulge in one half of a bagel or a nice croissant from time to time - but fudge brownies?? No way.

At least not the gays and lesbians who, by the Grace of God, have been kind enough to be gracious, kind, loving to me - in spite of the fact that they disagree with all of what the Catholic Church teaches.

Maria,

I think you are right about the priests leading us to our cells. And also about a NAMBLA mass. We could have a moment of silence for the holy blissful martyr Fr. John Geoghan. Santo subito! Flannery O'Connor would whirl in her grave if she had lived to see the Catholic Church become Church of Christ without Christ.

Carol,

I fear I must decline to attend the welcome fornicators mass. Too many temptations. Errr.... no ... I meant ... I have renounced my prior life of Augustinian concupiscense and libidinousness (I didn't put away my concubine: I married her. Darn. I'll never be a bishop even if I buy my own lavender soutane.) I now lead a life of chastity. It is a heavy burden but to those of us born with the scourge of heterosexuality, it is a reminder to take up the Lord's easy yoke and light burden. A consolation when the demons arise within and the evil one places scantily-clad temptation before us.

Anonymous,

It is my observation that those who defend acts of sodomy ("practicing [sic] homosexuals") are the first to pervert the words "judge not". We will judge and condemn acts which are clearly against the law of God and of nature. "Hatred, malice, un-Christian, uncharitable" -- the incessant shrill mantra of those permanently mired in grave sin. We will judge indeed. And we will condemn the sin. And it will a judgement made in charity which concerns the eternal destiny of your immortal soul.

p.s - Jerry - another four pounds this week and I actually cheated several of the days with a glass of wine and a small piece of cake. And a teeny tiny cannolli. (Ok, it was a chocolate covered cannolli.) And, I am eating fruit and yogurt but limiting it to a handful of berries a couple of times a day. The fruit definitely kicks cravings in...but I can't live without it.

I think I'm going to go for 30 instead of 20 and give myself a little room while I'm on a roll.

Anonymous said...

Once again, such a lack of Christian charity. "Fudge brownies" is obviously a reference to feces and anal sex....I'm sure that our Lord would get a chuckle from that type of immature response. And, calling gay people, "fruits" is sinful. You are all hypocrites.

Carol, you say, "The easy way or the hard way, Fr. Unni is going to cease and desist from characterizing everyone in the Archdiocese except for him in this way. He is going to be restrained from doing so. It's the end of the road for that kind of slander from him. I don't care who he thinks will protect him at 66 Brooks Road. If he wants to find out the hard way, game on." Who are you to say this? If you think that you are going to alter the way Fr. Unni speaks about all of you, you are more crazy than I originally thought. Game on, huh? Just how do you think you are going to stop Fr. Unni's "slander?" You can't. He will continue to inform his parishioners and the press that you are all a bunch of mean, unchristian, bullies. And, sorry to say, there's nothing you can do to stop it. Believe me.

breathnach said...

Carol, you must be devastated that wannabe heresiarch Father Unni will not grant you the honor of an audience. I don't know how you will be able to enjoy any July 4th festivities with such a rebuke.

Thankfully I recently attended Mass in West Roxbury, where Father Unni and his antics were criticized from the pulpit. The message is getting out.

TTC said...

Why don't you stop implying people are making vulgar references to sex or using 'fruit' to be mean? My remarks were innocent. Completely innocent. And, sincere. Who in the gay community eats brownies for breakfast? It's absurd.

It seems to me that the St. Cecilia's crew are the mean, spiteful, malicious judgmental people trying to keep other Catholics from feeling welcome at St. Cecilia's.

You think Fr. Unni is that protected that he's going to continue his slander?

You might be right. The Cardinal and Bishop Hennessey just might be somehow compromised enough that the Fr. Unni will be permitted to continue to slander 300,000 Catholics and make sinful fornication and licentiousness a sacramental offering at Christ's Sacrifice on Calvary.

I'll tell you one thing, and this you can take to the bank - we're about to find out.

Cheers!

Michael said...

Anon,

I think you are correct when you state that Father Unni's parishioners and the Press are identical. Father Unni is the toast of the materialist and cultural elites across the board.

Anonymous said...

Good, game on, Carol. You will be the loser here, I can assure you. As far as "breakfast" goes, the 11:00 Mass won't even be over until 12:30, so this will not be "breakfast" and don't play so dumb...you know that references to fruit salad means to refer to gay people as fruits. You know that. And, the reason that someone called the brownies, "fudge" brownies is because of that delightful expression, "fudge packers" you know that Carol. Don't be so dishonest. It's cruel, it lacks class and manners, and it's not Christian. It really gets in the way of your argument. There is nothing mean or cruel about the people at St. Cecilia. They are handling the attacks against them with dignity and grace and choose to look upon all of you with pity. You will not get your way here, Carol. You will not get to talk to Fr. Unni, the Cardinal and Bishop Hennessey think you're crazy, and all your letters to the Apostolic Nuncio, CDF, and Holy See have only resulted in them thinking you are insane and are certainly not to be taken seriously. Your letters go into a bin, and you know that. You will be treated well at St Cecilia next Sunday because St Cecilia is a community that models itself on the teachings of Jesus. It's too bad that you are too proud to take a similar approach.

TTC said...

Breathnach, I don't know who Fr. Unni thinks he is! Grant an audience? LOL.

What a spineless coward.

Folks, please -- nix the snide remarks. They go over my head and what I say gets wrapped up into it. I'm going to delete that stuff.

My objective here is to be supportive of people who want to journey towards Christ. No matter what kind of condition they are in.

I came back to my faith still doubtful about the teachings on contraception. I will go so far as to say that if somebody had shoved them down my throat at the beginning of my journey - I might have fled. I affirm the pastoral approach that some people need a gentler hand on the road to repentance.

That is not what is going on at St. Cecilia's. Fr. Unni is leading his parishioners to hate and rebel against the teachings of the Church and those who proclaim it. He is going to be stopped or it is going to get mighty ugly around these parts. You can take that to the bank.

You need to get your head in the game.

The schismatics-in-waiting at St. C's can feign their love of humanity and proclaim their "what would Jesus do" rhetoric till the cows come home. Until the Unni-ites affirm the teachings of the RCC as regards homosexuality, they will remain darlings of the media and the elites, but a scandal within the Church.

I'd suggest you look into the career and fate of Father Leonard Feeney and his followers. The Unni-ites are heading down the same path.

Stop your false accusations. No, I did not know. What do you think? A woman's mind doesn't sink to vulgarity. The practice of keeping it safe leaves her innocent of knowing the meaning of such remarks. I kept myself from this vulgarity for 54 years. I would ask readers to refrain from teaching me or anyone else reading here anything more about it.

I have removed those posts.

Furthermore, I have too much going on for me in the way of sanctifying grace to be concerned about whether Fr. Unni, the Cardinal and Bishop Hennessey or the Nuncio thinking I or anyone else calling attention to the spiritual abuse of parishioners at St. Cecilia's is 'crazy'.

I can assure you, with utter and complete confidence, that the Holy See is not on their reservation. That's why you saw the content of the rainbow ministry being deleted. That's why the Mass was calibrated to be just a regular old Mass where everyone is invited.

This isn't a game that I have any horse in the race to 'lose'. My conscience is clear and I am in good standing to greet Christ, which can't be said for John Unni, Bishop Hennessey, the Cardinal or anyone else enabling John Unni's reign of terror to continue.

Let's see the cards they play on July 10th and beyond. See ya there!

Glad to hear that your diet is going well. I'm still chuckling about your observations of the dieting habits of "gays."

Your wrote, "You think Fr. Unni is that protected that he's going to continue his slander?" I'm sure Fr. Unni knows better than to engage in unprotected slander. I'd expect he recommends safe slander to his congregants.

Your letters go into a bin, and you know that"

Is this supposed to hurt my feelings? LOL.

Do you have any idea where one's self-esteem comes from when one is serving Christ above all else?

If this were true, the content on St. Cecilia's website wouldn't have been deleted. The Mass would have gone on as scheduled. It would never have been hijacked and re-characterized as just a plain old regular Mass. So your position on this just doesn't hold water.

I will say one thing you're right about, the unfaithfulness of the Nuncio here in the United States has been revealed to the Holy See. I can't say much more about this publicly, but his gig is also up.

Fr. Unni is a mean little spineless and sneaky bastard who can't face his errors and apologize for his slander like a man. There is nothing Catholic nor Christian about his shtick.

Buckle up for the fireworks!

Peace of Christ.

Jerry, diet is going very well. I've never been so happy to eat so much cheese guilt-free!

I was dead serious about how serious gays are about eating crap. They don't eat processed foods, they don't eat sweets except for very rare occasions. I have a colleague who cracks me up. The one time, somebody brings something in sweet and I'm having a week moment, he is fortuitous enough to walk by and tell me not to!

Once, during Lent, I gave up chocolate. I was having a terrible week and so this one day somebody brought in delicious cupcakes. I grabbed one on the way to a meeting. I sit down at a huge table, settle in, take the cupcake in my hand to have my first and he says "Carol, you gave that up for Lent". He is killjoy! A skinny killjoy but a killjoy!

Brownies for breakfast or lunch or whatever have you...for a parish filled with gays and lesbians is about as lucid as bringing frozen dinners.

As far as the slander his parishioners believe he is powerful enough to continue, undisciplined - we shall see. The lawyers are involved so I doubt it. But he may have some goods on somebody. Something is going on, that is for sure. If so, he's not the only one who can play that game. I think the lawyers are going to be very surprised at the cards we're going to play this week.

Buckle up.

Jerry - re: the jargon

It's locker room talk as far as I'm concerned. It needs to stay out of the conversation for numerous reasons - one, there are ladies reading who are ignorant of the meaning and would like to remain so and two -and this is the more important reason, there are people reading here whom we need to treat with dignity and respect. They are wounded, hurt, they've been brainwashed to believe Catholics do not want them in the pews beside us.

All we want is the right to have our teachings proclaimed without being called hateful, mean, malicious -etc. A request that isn't offensive or a burden to anyone as this is our religion. If Fr. Unni wants to make himself the poster boy of what's going to happen when a priest derails, so be it. I would advise him not to, and I would advise his superiors to put the muzzle on him. But for every St. Paul, there's a Charlie Sheen. It remains to be seen what's going to happen.

How does that pretty little patriotic song go...

Let Freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today is a Day of reckoning.
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, Let the guilty pay, It's Independence Day

I am the one who made the reference to "fudge brownies." They are what my wife makes and I just reiterated what you said. In fact, I do eat them for breakfast if I have no croissants.

I must say I am disappointed you deleted my comment. I didn't mean anything so perverted as that cowardly anonymous character from the gutter alleges. I am sure you did not intend the alternative meaning of "fruit" either.

I think we should not allow those who are psychologically unable to discern the natural end of sex to pollute the English language with their evil tongues that are fit only for the sewer. They have already corrupted decent words such as "queer" and "gay". Now even the word "partner" is ambiguous.

Let them all go to buggery and get out of these comboxes and out of the Catholic Church if they continue to spew their filth, their bigotry, their malice and their perversion.

I am seriously thinking of showing up at that "welcome mass" and if Fr. Unni strays one iota from the strictest interpretation of Catholic doctrine, he will find that his heresies and lies will not go unanswered. If indeed he gives out with some milquetoast blather about what would Jesus do, then he'll find that his homily will immediately become "prime heresiarch's" question time.

Cardinal O'Malley, get your royal Irish arse over there and straighten out the lot of them. You are facing schism. We will no longer tolerate the corruption, the heresy, the destruction of the Church the founder of your order was called to repair. Verbum sat?

TTC said...

Jack,

I'm sorry that my deletion of the comment gave the impression I was on board the accusation you intended to imply some kind of perverted meaning to it. I thought I made it clear I did not.

Patrick took up the 'fruit' reference and said that's what we were dealing with. I took the meaning as fruitloops, another way to say 'crazy' and I thought the reference was also meant to apply to the Chancery luminaries.

However, once the words were twisted into something vulgar -- I removed them to give latitude to people reading here who are wounded.

You are in good company, as the kindly representatives of Jesus Christ twisted my words to turn them into something disgusting too - and to accuse my innocence about it as dishonesty.

I removed Patrick's comment also.

I hope you'll forgive me. I enjoy you immensely here in the comments boxes - we all do.

TTC said...

Thank you for your gracious acceptance of my apology.

Here is where I am at: It isn't that far fetched to want to bring Catholics home who are still not comfortable with Church teaching and to afford them hospitality. Maybe I have a soft spot in my heart because that's the journey I took myself.

Where this is going awry is that Fr. Unni has been leading gays and lesbians to believe that Church teaching and those who want it taught to the flock hate them, mean, defaming, malicious - etc. Further, he's cleverly been bringing in speakers to spit on Church teaching on the subject matter.

We can't let Church teaching be the boogeyman inside of the Catholic Church. That is not going to fly. Period.

But there is a transition period where we have a group of people who have been brainwashed to believe that everyone hates them. The internal rage has been cooking. Fr. Unni is a desperate man who needs an audience to lavish affection upon him. He's made Christ and His Church the enemy. He has wounded the flock he pretends he cares about to get them to adore him.

All the rage you see here are from these wounds, made by Fr. Unni. He's wound them up like jack in the box and they are popping up to show you their pain.

It really isn't that much of a burden for me to give them the latitude they need to relive them of that anger.

Speaking of which, I've never been a fan of the word 'sodomite'. My long-time readers know that. I don't think the gays are fond of it either. I'm hard pressed to give up the words fruit and brownies, though I think we should be careful in the ways we use the words as an act of mercy, to people showing us their wounds. Sodomite is a no brainer for me.

It's the fourth of July, have a brownie. Love ya.

I, for one, am sick and tired of having the laity being blamed for the problems that Church officials instigate and perpetuate. It's an old trick: Put people who think and see for themselves on a guilt trip to mute their criticism. If you get them to focus on themselves, they can't focus on you. Of course, Christ talked about splinters and planks but He never said that corrupt or inept spiritual authorities should never be confronted. After all, He did that with the Pharisees...and aren't we to follow His example?

From The Age of Martyrs

"What do we mean by martyrdom of witness and how does it differ from the other two? It differs from them in that, even in the absence of active opposition--the imitation of Christ must always face passive opposition. From whom? From those who lack a clear vision of the Savior or who, having had it, lost their former commitment to Christ. All that we have seen about the martyrdom by violence applies here too, but the method of opposition is different. Here the firm believer in the Church's teaching authority; the devoted servant of the papacy; the convinced pastor who insists on sound doctrine to his flock; the dedicated religious who want to remain faithful to their vows of authentic poverty, honest chastity, and sincere obedience; the firm parents who are concerned about the religious and moral training of their children and are willing to sacrifice generously to build and care for a Christian family--natural or adopted--such persons will not be spared also active criticism and open opposition. But they must especially be ready to live in an atmosphere of coldness to their deepest beliefs.

Sometimes they would almost wish the opposition were more overt and even persecution would be a welcome change. It is the studied indifference of people whom they know and love, of persons in their own natural or religious family, of men and women whose intelligence they respect and whose respect they cherish.

This kind of apathy can be demoralizing and, unless it finds relief, can be devastating.

To continue living a Christ-like life in this kind of environment is to practice the martyrdom of witness. Why witness? Because it means giving testimony to our deep religious convictions although all around us others are giving their own example to the contrary.

It means giving witness twice over: once on our own behalf as the outward expression of what we internally believe and once again on behalf of others whose conduct is not only different from ours but contradicts it.

Wherein lies the martyrdom? It lies in the deprivation of good example to us on the part of our contemporaries, and in the practice of Christian virtue in loneliness, because those who witness what we do are in the majority--numerically or psychologically--and we know they are being challenged and embarrassed by the testimony. We witness to them, indeed, but they are not pleased to witness who we are, what we stand for, what we say, or what we do.

Notwithstanding all of this, however, it behooves us to look at the positive side of the picture. We must remind ourselves that this witness of ours is not so sterile as we may suppose; quite the contrary. Although we may be, or at least feel, often quite alone, we are not alone at all. Not infrequently our severest critics can become our strongest admirers. In any case, witness that we give by living up to the conviction of our Faith is surely demanding on human nature. That is why we call it martyrdom. But it is a witness to the truth and God's grace is always active in the hearts of everyone whose path we cross.

If we would know the power of this martyrdom of witness we have only to read the annals of the early Church. The handful of believers whom Peter baptized on Pentecost Sunday were as a drop in the immense culture surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Yet see what happened. This small group of convinced faithful were able, in less than three hundred years, to turn the tide of paganism in the Roman Empire. For a long time they were deprived even of the basic civil rights accorded other citizens. They were often hunted like animals, and the catacombs tell us that they had to hide when celebrating the Liturgy and hide the tombs of their revered dead.

From the Age of Martyrs Part II

"But their patience and meekness finally prevailed. Yes, but only because it was supported by unbounded courage, born not of their own strength, but of the power that Christ promised to give all His followers that shall witness to His name everywhere. This promise is just as true today. All that we need is to trust in the Spirit Whom we possess, and never grow weary in giving testimony to the grace we received.

This is what Christ was talking about when He told us not to hide our virtues but to allow them to be publicly seen, like a candle on a candlestick or a city on a mountaintop. We should not be afraid that by such evidence of our good works we shall be protected from vainglory by the cost in humiliation that witnessing to a holy life inevitably brings. There will have to be enough death to self and enough ignoring of human respect to keep us from getting proud in our well-doing. God will see to that. On our part, we must be willing to pay the price of suffering in doing good, which is another name for being a living martyr, that is, a courageous witness to the life of Christ in the world today".

I agree totally with your analysis of Fr. Unni. He is a typical narcissist. Loves the klieg lights and the adulation. And I agree that outreach to those of homosexual orientation is desirable and necessary. But the injunction to "love the sinner, hate the sin" has to allow for recognizing the sin as such. The error of Fr. Unni is he plays to the "LGBT" "community". If one is living a chase life in conformance with the teaching of the Church, then one does not live in an "LGBT" "community." Courage is the way to go.

The analogue of that would be that there is a "contracepting community", or a community for any other kind of heterosexual moral error. That won't fly either.

The Cardinal needs to step up and teach. If he can't stand the heat, let him get out of the pulpit. But at least let him get Unni out of his.

Joe said...

Jack,
I think you called it well. Fr. Unni seems to do fine in the "love the sinner" department, but forgets the other half of the story about hating the sin.

If you want to know what Fr. Unni is preaching, look no further than the Rainbow Times (Note the URL "gaymass."):

http://www.therainbowtimesmass.com/2011/06142011/gaymass.html

"We here at St. Cecilia’s have an agenda…I have an agenda. Our agenda is the Jesus agenda…Jesus loved people. He accepted people. He ate with people, those who were the marginalized and ostracized sinners of his day. And by that compassion and interacting as Jesus did at this [communion] table by loving in a good way, people are strengthened, people are healed, people are reminded of their dignity, their beauty, goodness and worth — ready, ready — as they are! The last part of ‘Jesus agenda’ and I dare say the cardinal’s agenda is to be “supportive of all…You are welcome here, gay or straight, rich or poor, young or old, black or white..."

So, according to Fr. Unni's theology, the beautiful people at the "Come as you are" party are healed by love alone as they all sit at the table together singing "Kumbaya." Not a word about "Go and sin no more."

I think he may not have both theological paddles in the water.

"The verdict of human history is uniform. Sins against chastity lead to sins against charity. That is why Pope Pius XII said what he did when he canonized the young martyr St. Maria Goretti. He told the assembled audience of more than half a million in St. Peter’s Square that in the last half of the twentieth century the devil would seduce millions to abandon their Christian faith by using lustful pleasure as his demonic bait.

We could go down the whole list of the seven capital sins and see that each one is the object of the devil’s temptation. But he specializes in the first two sins of pride and lust. He deceives his victims into thinking they have the right to determine their own norms of morality, and then lures them into every form of lechery.

From pride and lust follow all the sins which the human will can commit. This, after all, is the devil’s main purpose in tempting us. He was condemned to hell for his sin of pride. He wants us to join him in his infernal paradise. Unlike the evil spirit, we have bodies whose most ecstatic pleasure comes from the use of our procreative powers. God has reserved the experience of this pleasure for the sacred precincts of matrimony. THE DEVIL HAS CONVINCED WHOLE NATIONS TO THE CONTRARY. Is it any wonder that one of the accepted definitions of “hell” in the English dictionary is “unrestrained fun or sportiveness?”

Maria, this is not a new problem. Remember that St. Peter Damian wrote "The Book of Gomorrah" in 1049! If clerical pederasty was going on in the 11th century, you can assume that it was going on a couple centuries before that, at least.

Catholic leaders...all Christian leaders, really...aren't immune from the temptations that beset the laity. Christian leaders across the board (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, liberal, conservative, whatever) have been involved in financial, sexual, political and other corruption for centuries. If you read Ezekiel 34, 1 Samuel 2 and Matthew 23, you'll find that corruption among religious leaders took place before the Church as such even existed!

Bishop Daniel Ryan was in union with Rome despite the fact that the hierarchy knew he was
raping teenage boys. Bishop Anthony O'Connell was in union with Rome when the Pope appointed
him Bishop of West Palm Beach, Florida despite the fact that the hierarchy knew he had molested teenage boys. They even made a payment to one victim on his behalf years earlier. The list goes on and on but what's the point? The point is being in "union" with Rome or your local
Bishop can lead you to Hell. Rome knows full well that Bishops like Cardinal Roger Mahony of
Los Angeles and Howard Hubbard of Albany have lost their faith but still they are in union with
Rome while they destroy their Dioceses. [this was written in 2009].

While bishops and priests in union with Rome have been destroying the Faith - good Holy Priests have been stripped of their faculties for simply defending the faith. Most of you know of a priest who falls into this category.

Fr. John Hardon, S.J. (RIP) was one of the first priests to offer his help to RCF (No one could
doubt Father's orthodoxy). In 1996 Fr. Hardon arranged for me to speak at a Detroit parish
and helped RCF raise funds. At the time he was telling anyone who would listen that, according
to his Vatican superiors "one diocese after another would be lost UNLESS THE LAITY DID SOMETHING."

FR. HARDON WAS MAKING IT VERY CLEAR THAT THE BISHOPS WERE CORRUPT AND DESTROYING THE CHURCH".

I believed that one thing RCF could do was publicly expose this corruption, prick the conscience
of the once faithful and maybe then things would change. I was wrong.

It was Fr. Hardon who suggested I use the canonical services of Fr. Alfred Kunz of Dane, Wisconsin.
While Fr. Kunz was glad to help RCF, he made it clear that "YOU WILL FIND NO JUSTICE IN THE CHURCH TODAY." Father's comments added to those of Hardon's painted a very dismal picture. But I still had hope that the "system" might work. Fr. Alfred Kunz was brutally murdered in 1998 while he was helping RCF with the case of predatory homosexual Bishop Daniel Ryan. Father's killer has never been found.

Good to know, huh?

Bingo, Maria. Steve Brady is a hero, as was Fr. Hardon and Fr. Kunz. You are 100% correct that Rome has been appointing pederasts with full knowledge. Pope Benedict even raised perv-shuffler and whistleblower-punisher Levada to the cardinalate and put him in charge of the CDF, his former position. Rome has made clear that seminaries are to admit homosexuals as long as they are of the so-called "celibate" variety. The one good action Pope Benedict has done was to remove the perverted cult leader Maciel. But as far as America is concerned, it's business as usual.

Jerry: I have given this an almost obsessive amount of thought. You know, lately I have been telling people, the laity has to take back the Church. I think the reason we are where we are, is that we think that the Bishops are going to save us. We imagine that they are the priests of our childhood. It is sort of like back in the 80's when no one could believe that Fathers were committing incest on such a massive scale with their daughters. Well, we have to accept that Bishop are corrupt. They aren't going to save us. They are the foxes guarding the hen house. How are homosexual Bishops going to protect us? They can't and they won't. Mobody really wants to say these things but we have to.

Did you see that they have now appointed a Jesuit to investigate predatory priests??? I about fell out of my chair laughing.See:

"Gregorian Jesuit: Priority Must Be Given To Abuse Victims" at America Magazine @

www.americamagazine.org/blog/entry.cfm?blog_id=2&entry_id...

I love this: "The Vatican is turning to the Internet in its struggle against child abuse with a new website allowing clergy around the world to share information on eradicating the problem. A key figure behind the initiative is German psychologist priest Hans Zollner from the Vatican's Gregorian University, who spoke to AFP about the need for fundamental changes in how the Catholic Church handles abuse cases. "Bishops have to give priority to victims," said Zollner, a member of the order of Jesuits..."

You think to yourself: Am I dreaming? Is this real? ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS? The "Society of Jesus", ahem, more like the "Society of Sodomy", is going to fix the problem? And we wonder why St.Cecelia's is a phenomenon. The Jesuits started the travesty at St. Cecelia's at the Jesuit Urban Center. Does anyone shut them up at America Magazine. No Sireee! So, now all the homosexuals in the Society are going to fix the problem of pederasty. Isn't this sort of like saying the arsonists are going to be in charge of the suppression of forest fires? Really, some days, being Baptist seems more reasonable. Lord, I have had enough for one day. God have mercy on us all, is all I can say.

I wish I could say what I do comes from some kind of reservoir of valor. Its more like the natural instinct you have when you see your children headimg for a hot stove. Something you do when you see a gang of thugs robbing and beating someone.
I get a chuckle ount of whoever it is that keeps posting their slander about Fr. Corapi over and over.. Time for some therapy to get yourself over that bullsheet thread?

I gave you a pulpit in several threads to deposit your convictions that black beards and a tan are sufficient proof to slander a man who has given so much. I pray ypu never are permitted to serve on a jury until ypu get the help you desperately need
Meanwhile, its time for Catholic priests to be afforded their civil and constitutional rights. If I were you, I would shut my piehole until this all plays out.

You seem to think I am blogging to receive some kind of achievement of Catholic celebrity status. I say what I sqy to pleaseth God. Sadly, whoever you are, you are incapable of understanding this fiat.
You are in good company in blogosphere.

Maria, you wrote:

"You know, lately I have been telling people, the laity has to take back the Church."

That is why the SSPX and the sedevacantists are such a diabolical trap, taking otherwise good Catholics out of the Church on the pretense that they will save the sinking ship from afar.

Presently, I am reading Johannes Jorghensen's biography of St. Catherine of Siena. Her times were not unlike our own, and there is much for us to learn from St. Catherine. Here's one gem:

"But I tell you that God wills and has so commmanded that even if the priesets and the pastors of the Church and Christ on earth were incarnate devils, it is seemly that we are obedient and subject to them, not for their sake, but for the sake of God, out of obedience to Him, for He wills that we should act thus."

P.S. Maria, I could use a good Catholic spiritual friend myself.

What a beaut, Veronica from from St. Catherine. It is funny that you should draw the parallels between the time of St. Catherine's as I went to bed last night thinking the same thing, prior to reading your lovely post.
Have you read Undset's bio?

St. Catherine:

"Our Lord hates above all things three abominable sins, covetousness, unchastity and pride. These prevail in the Bride of Christ, that is to say in the prelates who seek nothing but riches, pleasure and fame. They see the demons of hell stealing the souls which have been put into their keeping, and are completely unmoved, for they are wolves who do business with divine grace. Strict justice is needed to punish them. In this case exaggerated mercy is in fact the worst cruelty. It is necessary for justice to go hand in hand with mercy to put a stop to such evil".

She helped save the Church at a critical time in Her history...The laity have an important role to play...

Well, cross Corapi off the list of guys deserving of your time and energy to defend:

http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/father-john-corapi-resigns-from-solt/

Seems he has been living with a former prostitute on and off for some years. Not exactly a chivalrous kind of guy, if you ask me. More like a misogynist using women for his own benefit.

And that would include using the Virgin Mary to shore up his support and make some $$ to support his lifestyle.

Maria, I just read that very line last night!

No, I have not read Undset's bio; I only have two - Jorgensen's and "Lay Siege to Heaven". I have loved St. Catherine since I was in high school. Back then, you couldn't even find a holy card for her, but I was fortunate enough to obtain a First Class Relic of her at the time.

Veronica,

Conning is probably the 2nd oldest profession in the world.

It's just especially offensive when famous priests do it using the beautiful Truths of our Church.

And it's very frustrating to see it happen again and again, and so few seem to learn the lesson that Christ didn't tell us to be shrewd as serpents for nothing.

Serpents are shrewd because they are con-artists themselves (Satan being the Ultimate Con). Christ is telling us we have to be able to think like one if we want to avoid being taken in by them repeatedly.

But it seems a lot of Catholcs are hesitant to be shrewd because it flies in the face of the false notions of charity these con-men have used to trick them.

The signs were clearly there with Corapi, especially after he took on this crazy Black Sheep Dog persona. It's just that so many Catholics didn't want to be shrewd enough to see them.

Wake Up, People!! said...

I am not as familiar with the Life on the Rock priest. Didn't he quietly go away when caught? I don't remember him riling up his followers to badmouth EWTN?

I thought he had married the woman he fell in love with and started a family, but maybe I am wrong. If he did indeed fall in love, while still sad and sinful for a priest, that is a whole different situation from using and abusing a former prostitute for years.

This doesn't appear to be a case of love in any way, shape, or form. He has been living a life of deceit and finger-wagging at the liberals and gays while snorting coke and cavorting with a (former?) whore. When he got caught, instead of humbly repenting or at least exiting the scene quietly, he harmed EWTN, the former whore, and the Church by badmouthing the Bishops and inciting his followers into a persectuted frenzy of support.

Don't you see a difference there?

Wake Up

I borrowed this from another forum post:

"26. That the Servants of God should honor Clerics.

Blessed is the servant of God who exhibits confidence in clerics who live uprightly according to the form of the holy Roman Church. And woe to those who despise them: for even though they [the clerics] may be sinners, nevertheless no one ought to judge them, because the Lord Himself reserves to Himself alone the right of judging them. For as the administration with which they are charged, to wit, of the most holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which they receive and which they alone administer to others—is greater than all others, even so the sin of those who offend against them is greater than any against all the other men in this world."

It is from St. Francis of Assisi.

I will tell you how I view this. I am tired of all of this tearing apart of our Church. Enough of the demoralizing. We should be building up the Mystical Body of Christ instead of helping to rip It to shreds.

I understand that you would be angry with Fr. Corapi (a priest forever he is). The worst part is the scandal - many people hung on to his every word and he was the cause of not a few conversions and reversions to our beloved Catholic Church. Our Lord had some words to say about those who cause scandal.

My point is that our time would be better spent in building up the Church rather than helping to tear it down.

Veronica

P.S. You wrote:

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have been taught that it is more virtuous to give people the benefit of the doubt. Are you suggesting that we view all priests, bishops and cardinals with suspicion unless they prove themselves "worthy" of our trust? I can't live like that, and I do not think that Our Lord will fault me for trying to think the best of peole unless proven otherwise.

As for Fr. Francis Mary, no. Sin is sin.

So Fr. Francis Mary did it in a more acceptable manner? That makes a difference? He was still unfaithful and misled many into thinking he was something other than what he held himself out to be.

Greetings!

From what little I have read here, if true, I would opine that exploiting falsely accused and the unjust internal forum to cover up his inequities is indeed grave. What Fr. Mary Francis did pales n comparison.

This does not change the weakness of convincing. The man on his black beard and tan.
More later. I will be visiting with friends after the beach, so I will be tied up for a bit. Has he responded?

" I don't remember him riling up his followers to badmouth EWTN?"

But it was perfectly acceptable for the followers of EWTN (under the guise of their latest acquisition - NCR) to rile up people against Fr. Corapi?

Do you think you are incapable of commiting the same sins as Fr. Corapi?

Really...is there any one among us who should throw the first stone at him?

Veronica

Wake Up, People!! said...

Hi Carol!

Not that I am aware of? Haven't seen a response from him yet, but my computer is really slow today and don't have the time to look like I normally would.

Agree that black and tan is not reason to convict. But if a change in appearance goes hand and hand with other anomalies, it could legitimately be considered a red flag of deeper issues.

I was reading excerpts from "Coronary" available online, and in it, it mentions Corapi and Tamra (his assistance, who his supporters have been indicating is the accuser but I don't have certain knowledge of that) hunkering down at his Vegas residence for a couple days with cell phones turned off because he was so exhausted from his travails with the bad heart doctor. So it seems quite possible that Corapi hunkering down with (ex) prostitutes has been going on for a while (that was 2002).

Have no idea if this means there wasn't an actual conversion at some point. It's probably not nearly so black and white as that. I figure it is something more along the lines of it's hard to break old habits, and when old friends come calling, it's easy to get sucked back into the game.

There are probably no saints anywhere in this story. And no, I am not casting stones. But having lived through the Maciel scandal and seeing the effects of it on my family, I feel it is very important that we Catholics open our eyes to the warning signs of narcissists and con-men.

Have fun at the beach! These charlatans will also be with us, but God has certainly given us a very beautiful world to enjoy with our families.

Veronica,

I would opine that it is the Corapis of the world who tear the Church apart, not those who would sound the alarm.

I honestly do understand where you are coming from in wanting to giev people the benefit of the doubt. I don't pretend to have all the answers. I just know that many in the Church have gotten away with all sorts of injustice and even depravity because they have convinced their followers that being charitable means being blind to red flags---or refusing to look for them, for fear of being uncharitable.

Maciel "Believe all the good you hear and only the bad you see with your own eyes, and even then excuse it internally"

Jesus Christ "Be shrewd as servants"

Corapi showed signs of narcissism, grandiosity, and playing on people's emotions pretty early on. In the end, it was not charitable to him to let him get away with it because people wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.

That was not true charity to John Corapi, as it allowed him to get away with years of living a life that bears false witness to the Truth he was teaching.

Read this Garabandal letter written in 1984:

http://www.garabandal.org/News/Father_Corapi.shtml

To get really basic, simply look at the number of times he uses "I".

He thinks he is very persecuted already and has been given a very special vocation from Mary to bring holiness back to the Church. This letter screams, "Warning! Warning!" to me, but then again, I've lived through the Maciel scandal and learned some lessons the hard way.

I'm not saying this letter would be enough to condemn Corapi. I'm not even trying to say he was a con-man when he wrote it. I AM saying that in my experience when religious leaders fear-monger and breed persecution fears and are convinced they are God's answer to the Church's problems, it's reason to sit up and take notice and at least keep it in the back of your head as possible warning sign.

Like intuition, being shrewd like a serpent is a matter of synthesizing a lot of bits and pieces that taken alone might be harmless enough but in the whole picture end up having meaning.

The bottom line is that the Corapi story piqued my interest in March when the story first broke, and it wasn't rocket science to figure out something was seriously wrong. Not saying this to be mean---I have BEEN conned and bamboozled. I learned the warning signs the hard way.

Jasper, don't do what the others did. Two wrongs don't make a right. I am not delighting in his misfortunes at all. These are serious charges against him. They would be bad enough for a layperson, but for a priest...

As St. Catherine of Siena so wisely said:

"...corruption must come down to the roots before all can be well again."

Veronica

Wake Up, People!! said...

I don't delight in the sins of anybody.

But there is a certain relief in justice and in truth being exposed.

I wish Corapi had never acted this way. But he did, and he lied about it, and in doing so incited many followers to denounce the bishops, SOLT, and the (ex?) whore. He also exploited those people like Carol who have a genuine desire to help those innocent priests falsely accused. I personally find that kind of exploitation and betrayal extremely offensive.

A charlatan exposed should be a cause for rejoicing insofar as his days of conning and exploitation are over. This is a good thing not only for the general public but also for his own soul.

I'm not even gay. I'm just a mom of a large family damaged by a similar Catholic con in the past.

Anonymous said...

"A charlatan exposed should be a cause for rejoicing insofar as his days of conning and exploitation are over. This is a good thing not only for the general public but also for his own soul."

I try very hard not to rejoice over anyone's sins. Know why? Because Our Lord could have me fall on my own face in no time flat commiting much worse sins. I learned the hard way in my almost sixty years not to do that.

If you're smart, you won't do it either.

You better get to work cause you've missed a few charlatans in good standing - both lay and clerical. It shouldn't be hard for you to sniff them out - I, I, I, me, me, me....You have your life's work cut out for you.

Veronica

Wake Up, People!! said...

Veronica,

I confess I have a hard time understanding the angry undertone?

Are you upset when any other perp is brought to justice? Is it wrong to rejoice when the light is shined into the dark corners?

I would hope that if I were ever to start conning people, somebody would call me on the carpet. I'm not perfect---nobody is.

But there IS a difference between common sins and the sin of using the Truth of the Church to put yourself into a postion to lie and live a life totally contrary to the teachings of the Church while making money off it.

Sure, I'm a sinner. But I'm not a John Wayne Gacy or a Maciel or a Hitler, and there is absolutely nothing hypocritical in saying so or in pointing out that these men committed outrages.

On a much smaller level, there is nothing wrong with pointing out red flags when other charlatans come along.

And yes, you are absolutely right--this is a lifelong process, this process of watching for wolves in sheeps' clothing.

Again, I don't rejoice that Corapi sinned, but I do rejoice that he was outed because to let him keep living his life of sin while pretending to be holy is bad for everyone, not the least of all, Corapi.

What's so wrong with that? I'm just trying to share what I learned the hard way---I'm not saying I am perfect or that I can't get conned again. I would hope that others would share what they have learned along the way as well.

Anonymous said...

Madam, what angry undertone? It is my New Yorkese coming out. It's in my blood. New Yorkers, if you know them, are all blunt. We're kind of a no-nonsense bunch. Ask a New Yorker a question, be sure you want an honest answer.

Veronica

Wake Up, People!! said...

I suppose it was the fact you ignored (or chose to disbelieve) my statement that I wasn't rejoicing in Corapi's sin after all and implied I wasn't smart for it? lol

Now that I think of it, that's not really an angry understone--more just a snark.

I never denied I've missed some charlatans in my life; my family pays a price every day for missing Maciel and the Legion. And I would be the first to admit I just might miss some more---probably will, in fact, given human nature. But I will continue to try to be "shrewd as a serpent" for the sake of my family. It's what Jesus instructed us to do, after all.

Don't worry--I've got enough New York blood myself that it takes a whole lot more than snark to disturb my equilibrium. I just find it a bit puzzling.

First it was angry, now it is snark.

Press Release Concerning Fr John Corapi from SOLT Regional Priest Servant
Part I
July 5, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From: Rev. Gerard Sheehan, SOLT Regional Priest Servant Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Robstown, Texas

Fr. John A. Corapi submitted his resignation from the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity ("SOLT") early in June. SOLT is a Society of Apostolic Life of Diocesan Right with its regional office in Robstown, Texas.

While SOLT does not typically comment publicly on personnel matters, it recognizes that Fr. John Corapi, through his ministry, has inspired thousands of faithful Catholics, many of whom continue to express their support of him. SOLT also recognizes that Fr. Corapi is now misleading these individuals through his false statements and characterizations. It is for these Catholics that SOLT, by means of this announcement, seeks to set the record straight.

A woman, well known to Fr. John Corapi, mailed SOLT a signed letter detailing allegations of Fr. Corapi's sexual activity with adult women, abuse of alcohol and drugs, improper sacramental practices, violation of his promise of poverty, and other wrongdoing.

After receiving the allegation, SOLT formed a three person fact-finding team to ensure that it handled this matter in accordance with canonical norms. The team included a priest-canonist, a psychiatrist, and a lawyer. Two were members of religious orders, and one was a lay Catholic. Two were men, and one was a woman. All three have national reputations and substantial experience in ecclesiastical processes related to priest disciplinary issues.

VeritasVictor said...

asPart II:

As the Society was engaging this team, Fr. Corapi filed a civil lawsuit against his principal accuser. He contended that she had defamed him and breached her contract. The contract, according to Corapi's lawsuit, contained a provision binding the woman to silence about him. He offered the woman $100,000 to enter this agreement.

SOLT's fact-finding team subsequently learned that Fr. Corapi may have negotiated contracts with other key witnesses that precluded them from speaking with SOLT's fact-finding team. Many of these witnesses likely had key information about the accusations being investigated and declined to answer questions and provide documents.

When the fact-finding team asked Fr. Corapi to dismiss the lawsuit, to forbear from foreclosing his mortgage, and to release her and other individuals from their contractual obligations to remain silent about him, he refused to do so and, through his canonical advocate, stated: "It is not possible for Father Corapi to answer the Commission's questions at this time."

SOLT's fact-finding team has acquired information from Fr. Corapi's e-mails, various witnesses, and public sources that, together, state that, during his years of public ministry:

He did have sexual relations and years of cohabitation (in California and Montana) with a woman known to him, when the relationship began, as a prostitute; He repeatedly abused alcohol and drugs; He has recently engaged in sexting activity with one or more women in Montana; He holds legal title to over $1 million in real estate, numerous luxury vehicles, motorcycles, an ATV, a boat dock, and several motor boats, which is a serious violation of his promise of poverty as a perpetually professed member of the Society.

SOLT has contemporaneously with the issuance of this press release directed Fr. John Corapi, under obedience, to return home to the Society’s regional office and take up residence there. It has also ordered him, again under obedience, to dismiss the lawsuit he has filed against his accuser.

SOLT's prior direction to Fr. John Corapi not to engage in any preaching or teaching, the celebration of the sacraments or other public ministry continues. Catholics should understand that SOLT does not consider Fr. John Corapi as fit for ministry.

Father Sheehan will not be available for comments as he is attending the SOLT General Chapter from July 5-23.

Whatever Carol's mistakes, at least she was trying to defend somebody whom she believed was unjustly accused. What's your excuse?

Then again, you love to throw insults at people who disagree w/you. It's part of your MO, isn't it?

Perhaps it reflects a kind of psychological projetion on your part. Accuse others of having the traits you secretly refuse to admit you have.

Why are you so miserable, Shea? Why do you perpetuate your misery on others? Why do you need to be such a control freak?

Maria wrote (way back above when we were on topic): "Jerry: I have given this an almost obsessive amount of thought. You know, lately I have been telling people, the laity has to take back the Church."

I would have replied sooner but I was traveling today. I went through that obsessive pondering in the early 90's when I came to realize that Cardinal Law was a liar and a proponent of classroom sex-ed. Then I realized that the whole hierarchy was on board with giving sex-talk to kids in school. It's now homo-ed, with full approval of the USCCB in the program "Growing in Love." To my mind, this is on par with pederasty. I've been promoting the moms at http://motherswatch.net/ who have been fighting this plague for nearly 20 years now.

It's because of the sex-ed, perversion and heresy that I opted for the old Latin Mass. My wife and I won't take the kids to a Novus Ordo, nor let them ever go to a diocesan school. I'd send them to a government school first, if that ever became necessary.

Maria said...

Oh, Jerry: I know. It is just so sad. But we must remember, The Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph in the end. Fr. Hardon told us that only heroic Catholics would survive the coming and massive persecution of the Church. We are called now to be those heroic Catholics...

Mr. Veritas:

I don't know who you are but know one thing. Carol McKinley love the Catholic Church. To continue calling her and others at this site "cultish" or member of a "cult" serves no one. Unlike many in the blogosphere, Carol was able to see in Fr. Corapi someone who was suffering. She saw a "casualty among God's officers" and hungry sharks eager for a feeding. Period. Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald wrote the following about our priests:

"Pray for that most valuable grace for the Paraclete specifically in his vocation that when you see a priest despondent, beaten down, you will see in him Jesus Christ and that you will be constrained by the Holy Spirit, by the charity of God to go to help him. By encouragement, by a smile, by a little conversation, by watching, if necessary, by his bedside, whatever he requires, give it to him, in nomine Domini. Let us step up to a priest quietly and without ostentation but effectively, even as St. Camillus de Lellis bent over his poor wretched fever victims and whispered: "Lord Jesus, what can I do for you?'
Bend over these priests, humbly, eagerly, patiently and lift the cross. Try to lift it at least. The figure is very perfect because Simon of Cyrene only helped Our Lord to carry the Cross; he didn't carry it entirely. He helped Our Lord to carry it, and all we can do for any of our fellow beings, is help them. A priest is another Christ. These priests are going by, weak, at times beaten down. They have to be helped. We can't take the cross away from them but we can help them carry".

Carol understood this.We are Catholics who love Christ. If you wish to rejoice in the downfall of a priest, take your prideful glee elsewhere.

Jerry: Fr. Hardon knew how dangerous sex ed was. He railed against it. He also rightly noted that the abuses we see in the liturgy are the manifestation of of doctrinal error. Why is there no silence, reverence, respect in Church. Priests no longer believe in the the "real presence". I just really came back in 2009. Recently I have been searching for a Church where I am not assaulted by noise, cameras, phones. I traveled about and have now reached the conclusion that there is none such anywhere. The Latin Mass cannot be corrupted. How I wish it were said everyday. Only Sundays in the DC area...

Wake Up, People!! said...

How many times does this have to be repeated? Being happy that justice is being wrought and truth revealed is NOT reveling in the troubles of a fellow sinner??

What is so hard about that?

Do we call it reveling in the misery of a theif or an embezzler or a murderer or a rapist when he is brought to justice? Are we to be ashamed for being relieved he as been caught and revealed for what he really is?

You are not helping the (rightful) cause for wrongfully accused priests when you defend the likes of Corapi and accuse those glad the truth has been revealed of being of such low character as to rejoice in the travails of another human being.

Wake up! We can rejoice in light being shined in the dark places without being glad somebody sinned in the first place. Sin happens in this world. Justice should be sought. Because you are happy that justice has occurred does not mean you are happy the person sinned in the first place or that you are gay or that you are somehow against the Church.

This is craziness!

Wake up People,

I'm sorry about the scars left by Maciel. You're family will be in my prayers tomorrow.

I'm a sucker for a sob story, so I've been stung myself by a couple of con men here and there. I've always walked away with having no regrets in giving people the benefit of the doubt - until the jury comes in - which is certainly has today on Fr. Corapi.

I agree wholeheartedly that SOLT divulging what their investigation found is a victory for truth.

I agree wholeheartedly that SOLT divulging what their investigation found is a victory for truth.

I'm not sure there was a lot to wake up to before today. Having a tan and dying one's hair could describe me today. It is far fetched for some of us to put that on the list of suspicious signs that something nefarious is going on. Probably those of us dying our grays. LOL.

There's a time and place to make a conclusion. What has been going down on the internet in Catholic blogosphere was anything but virtue and justice.

People with experience with falsely accused know that separating oneself from ecclesiastical proceedings to take it to civil court could comport with restoring civil and constitutional rights to our priests. What he was doing was very plausible. All the pieces could fit a crusader for falsely accused priests.

But alas, he is a train wreck. God help him.

As you can see by Veritas Victor and a few anonymous posts, we have a couple of narcissists and sociopaths in the comments section right here on TTC that need to be taken to the shed when they show up. Your comments got caught in their tailwind. Sorry about that!
