American Life League Coverage

Judie Brown at the American Life League has been fearlessly posting over the last several days about the Caritas abortion referrals.

PANDORA’S BOX HAS NOTHING ON CARITAS CHRISTI

The facts about this “Commonwealth Plan” are disturbing on a very basic level. The Massachusetts Commonwealth Care plan is the very type of "universal health-care insurance" that President Barack Obama wants to impose on the rest of the country. Indeed, proponents of national health-care insurance always point to the Massachusetts program as a model of a successful plan.

Second, in order to be an approved health-care provider eligible for payment under the Massachusetts plan, the law requires that the hospital must provide the full range of “reproductive services," such as abortion, sterilization, contraception and counseling that recommends such services. All of these things are directly contrary to the teaching of the Church. This is what we have to look forward to from Obama's proposed national plan.

Furthermore, Caritas Christi cannot participate in the approved plan without agreeing to provide the mandatory “reproductive health services” that are in direct violation to Catholic teaching.

In order to avoid the direct provision of immoral services, CC has entered into a partnership with Centene, under which Centene will do all the dirty work and CC will claim that it is not doing anything contrary to the teaching of the Church. While this might sound like a little bit of compromise for the sake of the common good, it is no such thing! Cooperation with evil is not a part of Catholic teaching. It never has been and it never will be.

As a matter of fact, in Massachusetts law, Caritas must provide counseling that includes immoral "reproductive services" and must arrange for patients to receive those immoral services from Centene, even to the point of transporting patients to abortion facilities. Both Caritas and Massachusetts regulators have publicly confirmed this fact as Massachusetts Citizens for Life pointed out.

Furthermore, it is indisputable that, even if Caritas Christi itself does not perform any immoral services, its partnership with Centene means that CC will be profiting from the immoral services rendered by Centene. One can easily come to the conclusion that the entire partnership deal with Centene is driven solely and exclusively by financial motives.

This certainly begs the question, how could a Catholic entity such as Caritas Christi become embroiled in such a fiasco? How many evils will a Catholic health care provider accept as part of a deal that most assuredly was made in Hell?

CARITAS CHRISTI’S DEAL WITH THE DEVIL – II

CJ Doyle quote:

• In response to an inquiry from the Catholic Action League, Brian Delaney, Director of Communications for CeltiCare, stated on May 11 that, “CeltiCare’s program has been approved by the Massachusetts Connector Authority. Under the contract, CeltiCare will be operational July 1, 2009, and will meet all the [s]tate’s requirements under the Commonwealth Care program, including providing family planning services as appropriate.” Assertions to the contrary by Cardinal O’Malley notwithstanding, this is the third time since February 26 that a representative of the Caritas/Centene partnership has affirmed that the Commonwealth Care contract will include abortion and contraception.

As we mentioned yesterday, American Life League is well aware of the healthcare plans being orchestrated by the Obama administration. We are equally aware of President Barack Obama’s track record of using Catholics to his advantage and their willingness, for whatever reason, to be used. Obama’s relatively short history of appointments of totally pro-abortion Catholics, the Notre Dame scandal and other such events lead us to suspect that if the Archdiocese of Boston remains silent and does not demand immediate dissolution of the “joint venture” agreement, the death knell for genuine Catholic health care will have been sounded.

The evil that has gone unaddressed by Cardinal O’Malley, and persists in the context of unanswered questions and the absence of policies based on Catholic doctrine, is scripted by the devil himself. Of that there is no doubt. American Life League cannot be silent while such a dastardly plan moves forward with nary a whimper.
I somehow had missed the highlighted citation from CJ Doyle's last press release. The deception of the Cardinal, Chancery officials is breathtaking.

Do visit ALL and continue to spread the word, forward it to your priests, Bishops, forward it to the Nuncio, Rome, encourage intervention as though children's lives depended upon it. Because they do.

Subject: Caritas Abortion Contract Update

+
IHS

Dear Prolife Friends,

As you know, several months ago, Caritas Christi placed a bid on a lucrative contract to provide health care services that included victimizing the uneducated, distraught and poor with morally evil medical practices (including abortions with a $50 co-pay).

They were subsequently awarded the contract after Caritas officials gave assurances to the Commonwealth, in writing, that Catholic employees will be forced to counsel indigent Massachusetts residents that contraception, sterilization, in-vitro fertilization and abortions are the cures to their problems and predicaments. Caritas officials have given written assurances that the conversations and practices of Catholic employees will be monitored to ensure that they are counseling the poor with immoral guidance, convictions offensive to God and opposed to natural law, their consciences and their faith. Implied of course in this "monitoring" is the silencing and disciplinary actions against Catholic healthcare providers which will take place. Caritas officials are permitting monitoring of Catholics to discipline them should they respond to a pregnant woman seeking an abortion with the lifegiving and life-sustaining truths of the Catholic Church. This contract will not only eradicate the vocations and conscience protections of Catholics who wish to practice medicine without violating their conscience in Massachusetts, it eradicates the safe environment where a poverty stricken Catholic woman finding herself with an unplanned pregnancy will be responded to with the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

When Boston Catholics raised objections to the spiritual exploitations and demoralization of the immortal souls involved in a Catholic Cardinal hiring subcontractors to carry out the killing of infants required by a contract he wishes to sign and the theological errors inherent, Cardinal O'Malley published a statement which affirmed he was informed and educated about the contract, discussions took place and that persons saying that unethical and immoral services would be provided to the poor through the contract with Caritas were untrue and "doing a disservice to the Church". Since this contradicts the contract itself and public statements and written assurances given by Caritas officials, questions persisted and Cardinal O'Malley agreed to obtain the opinion of the National Catholic Bioethics Center to "assure him". That opinion has never materialized.

While Cardinal O'Malley has given the impression that the contract is on hold until the experts at the Bioethics Center render an opinion, Cardinal O'Malley and team at Caritas, led by Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, are proceeding full speed ahead in preparations for the hundreds of thousands of patients whose primary care physicians will be Caritas employees. They are hiring employees, appointing directors, officers and leadership. They have created several corporations that will hire the employees to carry out the moral evils upon the indigent to effectively inoculate the Cardinal and the Caritas Board of Governors from the victimization of the poor and the murders of the unborn children they have assured the Commonwealth they will carry out.

* MarketWatch (press release) - USA, CENTENE CORP-- In March 2009, we were awarded a contract to manage health care services for Massachusetts residents who lack access to traditional public or private health insurance. This contract will be operated through a joint venture between our subsidiary, Celtic, and Caritas Christi Health Care. Effective July 1, 2009, the two entities will serve the Central, Northern, Boston and Southern regions operating as CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts.

* BOSTON, May 04, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts (CeltiCare) today announced that Richard D. Lynch has been appointed Plan President and Chief Executive Officer for CeltiCare, effective May 1, 2009. Mr. Lynch will be based in the CeltiCare corporate office in Brighton, Mass., and will report to Frederick J. Manning, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Celtic Group....CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts, Inc. is a managed care organization that will provide health insurance to Massachusetts residents enrolled in the Commonwealth Care Program. A partnership between Celtic Insurance Company and Caritas Christi Health Care, CeltiCare offers a new form of local managed care that is tailored to the needs of Massachusetts' progressive healthcare system. Effective July 1, 2009, the plan will contract with the Commonwealth Care Health Insurance Connector Authority (Authority) to serve low-income, working adults who are not eligible for Medicaid.

Many Boston and national lay Catholics have contacted the Cardinal to get clarification on his assertions that this arrangement does not violate Catholic ethics. He has been unresponsive to those attempts.

Though the Caritas Board of Governors has refused to identify themselves, one of the members, Joe Fietelberg (who also happens to be the Boston head of the local Chapter of the Knights of Malta), identified himself to a Catholic benefactor who is a friend of mine. My friend had been fully briefed and apprised of the material facts of the contract over the past few months. Mr. Fietelberg repeated the Cardinal's assertions that "nothing has been signed" and attempted to explain new facts which are not yet public. If I understand Mr. Fietelberg's reply, in response to concerns raised, Cardinal O'Malley has restructured the organization chart to shift Caritas from a majority shareholder to a minority shareholder in the corporations set up to carry out executions of moral evils. I have sought clarification from Mr. Fietelberg and am awaiting his response. (exchange below).

Children of the poor are about to be massacred at the authorization and Cardinal's directives to Catholic employees and healthcare workers so that the diocese can be the beneficiaries of a lucrative contract. Not a single Bishop in Massachusetts has raised an objection. Several national Bishops, the Nuncio and the Holy See have been apprised. It does not appear that we have the system in place to protect children from being abused with the collaboration of Chancery officials, even if that abuse involves murder. The Cardinal responded by posting a character assassination on his blog about Catholics who don't need ethicist to index the theological errors in the situation, the spiritual exploitations and abuses to the poor, the obliteration of the right to practice medicine without violating our religion or the misleading of souls into temptations and debauchery.

This is a very disturbing situation. Let us rise to the occasion.

Call the Cardinal at 617-254-0100 and register your disapproval.

Arm yourself with the facts, send a letter to a dozen Bishops and Cardinals in the U.S. of your choosing and ask them to go to the Holy See and beg their intervention. Send a letter to the Nuncio, certified, telling him that the remote material cooperation of Chancery officials in the killing of unborn children is a far greater scandal than remote material cooperation with pedophilia. Ask him to seek emergency intervention in Boston as though childrens' lives depended upon it, because they do.

Forward this email to a dozen prolifers in your network and ask them to do the same.

Finally, pray for all involved, with special petitions to our precious Pope John Paul II.

In Christ, Carol McKinley

Dear Mr, Fietelberg,

For several months, I have been updating my friend _______________ about the contract awarded to Caritas Christi that requires abortions and other moral evils.

Our mutual friend __________ mentioned that he brought our concerns to your attention in a discussion as head of the Boston Chapter of the Knights of Malta. It is my understanding you informed ___ at that time that you are member of the Board of Governor of Caritas and responded to those concerns by providing him with the informative email below to assist his assessment of the situation. _____ graciously tried to help me understand, but I'm afraid it wasn't completely gelling, so I am writing to seek clarity on the missing pieces and questions he was unable to answer.

If I understand your email correctly, you are not disputing that the contract awarded to Caritas mandates abortion services and other services contrary to Catholic moral teachings be provided to patients. You do not dispute that Caritas has promised to provide family planning services (including abortion) in and out of network. You are also not disputing that Caritas has given written assurances that Catholic healthcare workers will be forced to advise an emotionally distraught woman seeking an abortion at Caritas where to obtain o ne, and to arrange transportation if necessary. You do not dispute that Catholic healthcare workers who for moral reasons would never advise and assist any person (including a pregnant and distraught woman) that abortion is an option will now have to quit their jobs, as it is a gravely sinful act and offense against God. Am I correct in my understanding of these issues? If there are new facts available now which were not published in the Globe, and which you believe ___, I, and thousands of other concerned Catholics are unaware of, could you share them?

You mentioned that Caritas now has "an outstanding Management team in place" great to hear that; however, I do not immediately understand how strong management will somehow allow Caritas to not violate Church moral teachings as part of the arrangement where those same managers have agreed to refer women to abortions. Could you explain further why you believe strong management will result in Caritas not violating Church morals, as the published comments in the Globe indicated those "strong managers” indeed plan to do?

You mentioned that the Centene-Caritas proposed plan would have Caritas be the majority, not the "minority" shareholder. Can you explain the significance of that? Does that somehow mean they will not be referring or transporting patients to get abortions-- thereby materially collaborating with evil--as committed in writing to the state? Is there some assessment or study underway to advise the Cardinal and Caritas on how many layers of legal entities or how many shares of stock might be held in the combined entity in order for a collaboration in the killing of unborn children to somehow be permissible? (If not, I would imagine that you have advised the Cardinal and the Board of Directors to take out a substantial directors and officers liability policy, as even one physician's livelihood that will be taken away would be a sizable award sought for damages?)

Forgive me, but we don't seem to be on the same page. The faithful who are objecting to the corporate involvement of an entity advising poor women to get abortions thought they were waiting for the National20Catholic Bioethics Center’s opinion on the moral issues associated with forming such a corporation as well as the effects upon the immortal souls of the Catholic physicians and healthcare workers who will no longer be able to advise the distraught woman that abortion is murdering her child--and who will instead be forced to give her resources on abortion written by abortion advocates. Is the National Catholic Bioethics Center rendering an opinion about how the Church might enter into the lucrative contract they'd like to sign by shifting Caritas’ ownership share in a combined entity whose services violate Church moral teachings and deprive babies of their fundamental right to life?

Again, forgive me, as I don't mean to stampede those working on this into assumed incompetency. However, in principle, I’d invite you and others involved to replace the services or practice of "abortions" with the practice of "pedophilia" when considering the moral implications of the agreement. Assuming we all agree that there is no number of layers or number of legal entities put between the Church and victims that would make it permissible to collaborate with the moral evil of “pedophilia,” then how could anyone envision this being permissible with the taking of an innocent life via abortion?

I look forward to hearing your perspectives on the questions I have raised.

Carol McKinley

XXX-Thank you for sending this along.

Here are a few missing pieces:

· The Globe wrote this early on before all today’s facts were available

· There has been no execution of the Connector agreement at this time. There is a clear intent to try and be part of this resource which principally serves the poor

· In the Centene-Caritas proposed plan Caritas would be the majority, not the “minority” shareholder

· Cardinal Sean has this under ethical review by the Church’s highest talent base

· Caritas now has had an outstanding Management team in place for one year which has a skill set that was missing

· FINALLY—none of us should let innuendo or inadequate information stampede us into assumed incompetency

Be assured that with my 1950s HC background I will never support a development which would injure our Church. Having said this I will also tell you that while at HC (Holy Cross) I learned to use the full power of judgment to find new ways to improve things while living within the Church’s standards.

See you in June,

Joe

However, planned parenthood made Caritas put their promises and writing and then released the content of those promises to the Boston Globe:
From the Globe:

The Connector Authority board, which oversees the Commonwealth Care program, voted unanimously in favor of the joint venture proposed by Centene Corp., a St. Louis-based health organization, and Caritas Christi Health Care Network.
The vote followed several closed-door sessions in w hich officials from Centene and Caritas, the minority partner in the joint venture, assured regulators that women will have "ready access" to family planning and reproductive services, an issue that sparked concerns from abortion foes and reproductive rights activists.
Among the written assurances are a pledge that medical staff operating under the Centene-Caritas insurance plan, known as Commonwealth Family Health Plan, will inform women of their healthcare options, including abortion. The insurers will also provide a toll-free customer service line, available around the clock, to inform women abou t where they can get contraception, sterilization, and other family planning services not offered in the immediate setting. In an emergency, a service representative will arrange transportation to the nearest appropriate facility, officials said.
The regulators promised to watch closely. "We will certainly monitor their performance ," said Jon Kingsdale, the authority's executive director. "We will not allow them to start up or continue if they are not in compliance."
As a measure of the underlying tensions, four board members emphasized the need for oversight.
"I remain somewhat concerned about implementation," said Nonnie Burnes, state commissioner of insurance and a former Planned Parenthood board member. "I am willing to support this as long as we have some way to monitor this" in doctor's offices and other healthcare facilities.

**UPDATE

Local pro-lifers here in Boston have told me that when they've written the Cardinal, he has sent back the following response:

"The Cardinal will not approve or allow any activities or procedures that are not in complete accord with Church teaching to be performed at Catholic hospitals."

The contract requires abortions be done to women, they've promised the abortions will happen. He has every intention of proceeding with this contract. He is setting up an elaborate power point presentation to get the woman from point A (Caritas Hospitals) to point b (the abortionist). He believes this is in complete accord with Catholic teachings.

Nobody acting in good faith would enter into a contract promising to carry out abortions, hire people to perform them, promise to get the women there and provide transportation if necessary and then make believe he isn't approving it or allowing it.

I think a lot of people are going to be shocked when this goes forward, because they sincerely believed he was putting kibosh on what is irrefutably against Catholic teaching, obvious to even the village idiots.

God Bless!

Diogenes: Rex Mottram, Model for Catholic Laity

Diogenes' Commentary on Cardinal O'Malley's Abortion Taxicab Services at Caritas Christi:

In Brideshead Revisited, Rex Mottram is determined to become a Catholic-- for reasons that have nothing to do with faith. Actually Rex has no interest whatsoever in questions of faith, and consequently he is quite happy to profess whatever beliefs are required of him....

Rex Mottram would fit nicely into the Boston archdiocese. He would not ask questions. He would accept statements offered by the cardinal-archbishop, no matter how implausible those statements might seem.

(Best of all, Rex would toss folding money into the collection basket. Did I mention that the Annual Appeal begins this weekend?)

Cardinal O'Malley tells us that he has been assured a partnership formed by the Caritas Christi health-care chain will not violate Catholic moral principles-- despite the fact that the partnership will provide for abortions, sterilizations, and the whole panoply of medical services mandated by a state government program. Rex would find the cardinal's statement convincing.

When somebody shows you who they are, believe them.

Our religion is not a cult. It is neither sinful nor evil to unravel lies, even when the Cardinal is dishing them out for consumption.

There is no room to believe this elaborate set up to was done in good faith.

They know it's wrong because they set up a partnership to bait other people into doing what they wouldn't do themselves.

Even if you can logic your way around the child killed and the mother, the doctors and nurses exploited, the conscience protections of Catholics given away, the thousands who will have to quit their jobs or take blood money with consequences to their soul and their state of grace--- in the best case scenario, the Cardinal is baiting Centene employees, the mother, the cabdriver and the abortionist to commit a grave offense against God. Who would throw uncatechized people, poor people lost in the despair of an unplanned pregnancy into this debauchery?

This couldn't possibly be the one and same Gospel of Life of Christ Crucified. It is it's antithesis and it takes a nanosecond to fisk it.

There is no excuse for this and the lies to cover it up are as disturbing as the arrangement itself.

Hot off the Press: Boston Archdiocese Gospel of Life Non-Referral Memo

Cardinal O'Malley Gets Support of Leading Theologians on a confidential hot off the press Non-Referall Memo for diocescan standards of care to Boston's poor and vulnerable citizens.

  • You're eligible for an abortion but we don't do them here, call the 24-hour abortion hotline and they'll set up the appointment.

  • We don't do Mercy killings here but here's a quarter. Go call Jack Kevorkian.

"For some of these prolife groups, no cooperation with evil is ever justified, but that's more of a prophetic stand, a new way of applying the tradition," said Cathleen Kaveny, a professor of law and theology at the University of Notre Dame.

  • We don't sell blow. Here's a crack pipe and the number of the neighborhood dealer.

  • We're not permitted to kill. Take this scalpel and a copy of OJ Simpson's "If I did it" and we'll see you for follow up in six weeks.

Those who are 'appalled' by these actions are of course entitled to their opinions, but not their own facts. Neither the Catholic moral tradition, nor the current Magisterium of the Church, has said that we absolutely cannot cooperate (or tolerate) in systems and/or actions that might be considered objectively immoral, said Rev. James Bretzke, professor of moral theology, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry

  • These old sick priest are sucking our wallets dry. When retired priests get sick, throw them out of Regina Cleary, cut off their health insurance, reduce their salary to 500 a month and refer them to the shelters. We need resources to care for the sick and poor.

At a time when the Cardinal and Archdiocese are striving to combat the morally unacceptable fact of 47 million uninsured people in this country, it will already be a scandal if the most vocal Catholic response is a debate about 'the principle of cooperation.' Where is the Catholic debate about the best way to ensure health care for all?", said Lisa Sowle Cahill

  • Thou shall not steal. You have a new baby. You're poor. The mother of those triplets in the bed beside you will never miss her Coach bag.

  • If the contract compels us to promote abortion to the women, we can wash our hands of it. We'll give out Centene's number but not for the purposes of attaining the abortion (nudge-nudge/wink-wink). Centene's employees will be guilty of dialing the abortionist's number. If they're dumb and misguided enough to carry out the plan, I won't be held responsible. Let them eat cake.

"As I look at the way Caritas Christi has structured this arrangement, it allows them to be participants with the state in the care of the poor and the most vulnerable citizens of the state of Massachusetts in a way that brings the richness of their system and the caring nature of that system to the poor, without in any way violating any of the religious directives or the moral imperatives of our faith," said Sister Keehan of the Catholic Medical Association.

  • We're not "willing" the cabbie to arrive at the abortionist from Caritas just because we give him the voucher to take her there. The abortionist would be killing children even if the Cardinal didn't order his employees to send them there. To hell with them all. Not my responsibility. They're pagans.

In other words, material cooperation refers to actions that may entail assistance in evil doing without the agent willing the evil action; formal cooperation signifies acts that are done with the agent’s will directed to the aim of attaining the evil, said Rev. Kenneth Himes, chairman of the theology department, Boston College:

  • There's no hookers in the building. You can find them at the corner of Columbus and Mass Ave. Can I call you a cab?

"To be perfectly clear, Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion, or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching, and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church," the cardinal blogged. "We are committed to the Gospel of Life, and no arrangement will be entered into unless it is completely in accord with Church teaching."

Julia Fleming, associate professor of ethics, Creighton University

"By their nature, decisions about scandal and mediate material cooperation require prudence, as well as sensitivity to the local conditions and particular circumstances surrounding such choices. This is why the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services emphasizes the discernment of the local bishop, rather than claiming that a simple rule can resolve all difficulties. The document also observes: 'Scandal can sometimes be avoided by an appropriate explanation of what is in fact being done at the health care facility under Catholic auspices' (No. 71). One should read Cardinal O¹Malley¹s careful statement in that light."
Oh, do we ever my dear.

Do we ever.

There's a Sucker Born Every Minute

I got a large number of emails and phone calls today regarding the email Catholic Citizenship in Boston circulated this morning saying Cardinal O'Malley had "put to rest" any concerns regarding abortions referrals at Caritas "on his watch".

Cardinal O’Malley Issues Statement on Caritas Christi/Centene Corp. Deal

Putting to rest any concerns over the possibility of losing the Catholic identity of the Caritas Christi hospitals under his watch, the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, issued a statement this past week assuring supporters and critics alike that no Archdiocesan agreement would violate the Church’s teaching on abortion.

His Eminence blogged:

To be perfectly clear, Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church. We are committed to the Gospel of Life and no arrangement will be entered into unless it is completely in accord with Church teaching.

Recognizing the complexity of the proposed arrangement, I will ask the National Catholic Bioethics Center to review the arrangement and to provide me their opinion.

Put to rest?

I spoke to Victor(the Executive Director) and told him people defending the faith don't much appreciate being thrown under the Cardinal's bus by an initiative whose job it's supposed to be to...defend the faith. I also pointed out that Chancery lackeys had neglected to send him the article in the Boston Globe that contradicted Cardinal O'Malley's assertions, which he certainly was grateful to have and offered to send further information out to grassroots troops, which I certainly accepted the offer to arrange.

Nice guy but just got caught up into the vaccum of the Chancery's Publicity Stunts.

*****UPDATE

A local activist sent the following email:

The words on Catholic Citizenship e-mail: "To be perfectly clear...I will ask the National Catholic Bioethics Center to review the arrangement and to provide me their opinion.", are indeed from Cardinal Sean's blog of March 6, 2009.
However, on March 12, 2009, Cardinal Sean issued another statement: "...I have asked the National Catholic Bioethics Center to review the agreement and to assure me that it is faithful to Catholic principles." He is now delaying, passing the buck, and asking NCBC, not for an opinion, but to rubber-stamp the Caritas/Centene arrangement!

That "assure me" didn't sit quite right with me either.

By the way, many, if not most people in Boston who have had experiences with Cardinal O'Malley with respect to trying to defend the faithful from scandal, have all articulated that they expect the Cardinal to lallygag and stall the opinions from being realized until after the contract is signed and awarded.

What's a guy to do if it takes a year to get his hands on the opinion and in the interim the contract just so happens to need to go forward?

It is consistent with the history of his tenure here in Boston and it is what it is.

Meanwhile ETWN's story leaves no room for the Cardinal's malarkey.

Catholic Healthcare Agency in Boston Wins State Contract - Including Abortion Coverage

Boston, Mar. 12, 2009 (CWNews.com) - Caritas Christi, the health-care agency administered by the Archdiocese of Boston, has joined in a successful bid for a government contract to provide health services for low-income clients. The program requires coverage for abortion, sterilization, and contraception.

State officials on March 13 awarded the contract for low-income coverage to Commonwealth Family Health Plan, a joint venture set up by Caritas Christi and the Centene Corporation, a Missouri-based company which currently has no facilities in Massachusetts. The Commonwealth Family Health Plan program will be centered around the Catholic hospitals of the Caritas Christi network.

The involvement of the archdiocesan health-care system in a program that provides abortions drew protests from Boston Catholic activists. The Catholic Action League called the contract “a significant defeat for the pro-life movement, inflicted not by secular society, but by the Catholic Church in Boston.”

Last week, in a response to such criticism, Cardinal Sean O'Malley asserted: “Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church.” However, the cardinal's claim was contradicted by representatives of Commonwealth Care, who assured state officials that their program would provide "ready access" to all of the services mandated by the government program, including abortion.

Under the Commonwealth Family Health Plan system, abortions will not be performed at the Caritas Christi hospitals. But women who wish to procure abortions will be given a telephone number to call for information on where abortions are performed, and, if necessary, transportation to those sites.

Caritas Christi Abortion Referral Services - Today's Letter to Cardinal O'Malley

Blogging from the sidelines of East Fourth Street in South Boston, where the parade in honor of St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Boston, known for driving the snakes out of Ireland was held today. A magnificent parade, as it always is.

Cardinal O'Malley has given away Catholic education of our children to Jack Connors and rebels of dissent. He has given away the rights of parents to define for their children sexual touches that are good are within the context of a Sacramental marriage and sexual touches that are bad are those outside of that Sacramental bond and he has given the definition of that to Planned Parenthood, nowdescribing those actions to our children in religious education starting in kindergarten. Our sweet innocent angels are being sexualized in Kindergarten, against our will and the directives of our Magisterium. He has put the culpability of the protection children from sexual sociopaths into the hands of children themselves. He's pressured our priests until there was only one left willing to defend children from violent rape stories as the sanctity of our teachings on sexuality and insisted on putting the culpability where it belongs: the adults who need to protect children. He has set up to crucify that one priest in the public square. He has given away the canonical rights of innocent priests to defend themselves against false accusations. He has taken away the rights of our priests to defend themselves civilly from false accusations. He has taken away the vocations and the rights of innocent priests to even celebrate the Sacraments. He has threatened to slander/publish the names of innocent priests and sully their reputation as if were guilty of the charges. He his setting a stage for public persecution for these priests and their families. He has given away our Churches, our Altars, Our Sacramentals and Holy Relics. He has reduced salaries of retired priests to a pittance no human being could live on even in abject poverty. He has taken away the healthcare of sick, elderly and dying priests and is dumping them like empty wallets.

May the road rise with Cardiinal O'Malley, may the wind be always at his back. May he be filled with wisdom, courage and right judgement. May whatever snake or snakes infesting this city, in the Name of Christ, be driven out the Rectory door at Union Park, take a left to head northeast in a straight line and walketh until they reacheth the shores of the Charles River. May they taketh off thy holy sandals and wade into the water until its height reaches thine eyebrows may they open their holy pie holes and sucketh in the canal waters.

Subject: CaritasAbortion Referral Clarification and Impending Legal Action

+
IHS

Dear Cardinal O'Malley:

I would like to clarify for the record confusion that appears to be arising from your public statements implying that the Caritas abortion referral arrangement will not result in any action that could be construed as abortion "referrals" by Catholic primary care givers at Caritas. Your statements of record imply that bringing the stream of women covered for abortions services, who intend to obtain an abortion, will not result in any action that will compromise the salvation of our primary care givers at our Catholic Hospitals. Your statements of record imply that in your arrangement, the "abortion referrals" take place through the employees of "Centene".

The theological arguments with respect to using the mitre of the Cardinal Archbishop of Boston to set up a partnership to bait uncatechized people at Centene to commit evil acts in an effort to absolve yourself, I'll save for another day.

Hopefully, God will permit the Holy Spirit to act in this woman, whom among others, you refer to as people who do a great disservice to the Church, to addresses J. Bryan Hehir's theological fallacies that there is no "referral" happening at Caritas facilities.

As mentioned above, you seek to now direct stream of women seeking abortions and covered for those abortions through their insurance company into the offices of our primary care physicians and Hospitals of Caritas. Caritas facilities will be their first of three stops in the abortion sojourn.

Though you personally have claimed that the dynamics of this venture will not cause anyone to promote abortion, refer a woman out of Caritas towards her abortion or any other actions against the teachings of the Church, the statements of the party of the first part, Caritas-Christi have contradicted you.

As reported in the Boston Globe, the Board of Caritas( who has refused to identify itself) has given assurances and promises (in writing) that employees of Caritas, as primary care givers, will be compelled to describe abortion (and other services against the teachings of the Catholic Church) as a viable option. In-vitro fertilization, embryonic stem cell therapies, sterlization, contraception are among the discussions which now must take place. Additionally, sexually active adults who will now be the medical responsibility of Catholic physicians who will be compelled to apply the standard of malpractice to the stream of patients seeking services you wish to bring them. They will have to hold discussions about condoms and HIV testing and other enabling and accessory conversations forbidden in Catholic teachings.

Further, while you are avoiding speaking the truth of the above in the public square, you opine that any positive actions of Caritas such as giving a woman the phone number and instructions to proceed towards her abortion, sterilization, embryonic stem cell therapies - and the woman walking out of the Catholic facility to obtain them, sometimes calling the taxicab ride to get there, is somehow not a "referral" or evil.

Yet, you know full well that you will never engage in such conversations yourself. You will never hand a woman the abortion hotline number to obtain her abortion referral. You will never call a taxicab for her and wish her luck on the way out the door. Because, you would not jeopordize your own soul by doing it. But you freely jeopordize the thousands of people who will be involved in these actions through your directives. You seem to have little concern for not only our healthcare workers, but the employees of Centene and mostly, the woman leaving Caritas in the taxicab with the child she carries in her womb whose life will be snuffed out. This your Gospel of Life, as you called it.

Several physicians have written on Michael Paulson's articles regarding the situation you are putting them in. The quote below can be found on Paulson's "Cardinal Warns Approval Not Final" at Boston.com:

  • If the doctors at these hospitals give a phone number/transport/make a referral to an abortion mill that is "cooperation" with intrinsic evil.As a physician, and more importantly as a Catholic physician, I will never do this, nor could I work at a hospital where this is considered "standard of care" for some quasi contractural aggreement. In fact, in my ED, I aggressively talk to these young scared women about the alternatives and refer ALL to a "pro-life crisis pregnancy center" where they are offered both truth and love.On the surface it seems that the Diocese is trading morality for cash. However I have not seen the contract. I do wonder, though, what authority does the National Catholic Bioethics Center have.
Get ready, my prediction is that this is the first of many of these same type of arrangements to come down the pike in the near future in medicine. The public may soon find out what it means to be a truly Catholic Hospital.

  • My youngest daughter vocational interests are to become a nurse to serve the sick and poor. As I have mentioned to you before, and reiterate here again, in an attempt to preserve the vocations of Catholics who wish to practice medicine in the Commonwealth at Catholic facilities, if you proceed on this path, I will be seeking an injunction in superior court to stop you. The second wave of legal actions will include civil actions to recover the annual salaries of any and every Catholic heatlhcare worker at Caritas who will be forced to quit their jobs.

Why you would ever need the counsel of Catholic ethicists to "assure you" this venture is morally ethical from your mitre is mystifying. However, next Friday will be two weeks from the time you engaged their counsel. This is a no brainer for Fr. Tad and others at the Bioethics Center. I will expect you will have some kind of statement by next Friday. If, for some reason, you need a few more days, please have one of your representatives drop me an email. Otherwise, I will be forced to proceed in civil actions to protect my daughter and the thousands of Catholics whom this will affect. I would appreciate the courtesy of your giving me notification that you will need more time before forcing my hand to take a legal action.

In all the years we here in Boston have been faced with dissent and legislation and false accusations against some of our priests, Mayor Menino who used the newspapers to describe loyal Catholics as hateful and biggoted people, Voice of the Faithful who is trying in Connecticut what they couldn't accomplish here because I and my group of faithful Catholics fought them tooth and nail as you coddled them, you never once articulated that that these were "people doing a great disservice to the Church". I take exception to your attempt to undermine the credibility of people trying to protect children against being sent to be murdered from a taxicab from a Caritas Christi facility.

You may find the this week's weekly column by Fr. Rutler helpful.
While you loathe the vocation of driving out of the temple with a whip, it is a valid vocation in the face of weakness and corruption over money. Not while I breathe will I permit you to do this.

    In Jesus Christ,
    Carol McKinley

Church of Our Saviour, NYC Masthead

    FROM THE PASTOR
    by Fr. George W. Rutler
    March 15, 2009

The same Jesus who was transfigured in glory on the mountain did a very earthy thing in using a whip to expel the moneychangers from the temple. In the early weeks of Lent the Church recounts both as a reminder that God came into the world to change it. Christ’s glory is displayed that “you might be partakers of the divine nature,” but that glory is contingent upon us “having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:4).

As Jesus led Peter and James and John up the mountain, so he leads us up to glory, like the priest about to ascend the altar steps in the older form of the Mass: “Introibo ad altare Dei” (“I will go unto the altar of God”). That brush with divinity at the Transfiguration, enveloped by a cloud, is a preparation for the conflict between splendor and horror at the foot of the mountain. Pope Leo the Great explains how Our Lord was strengthening the Apostles for the crucifixion to come.

The kind of life that forgets God’s glory becomes depressed, despite attempts to put on a veneer of happiness: like Cole Porter’s song “Down in the Depths on the Ninetieth Floor.” This does not mean that Christ saves us from conflicts. His followers must enter this world’s gravest conflicts, but the consolation of his glory saves them from being psychologically conflicted. Having led the three Apostles up the mountain, he leads them down. More help is needed going down than going up: This is a fact of mountaineering and it is a fact of life itself. The same three Apostles who witnessed Our Lord’s glorious transfiguration on the mountain attended his agony in the garden. By guiding the Apostles down the mountain Christ was instructing them in the virtue of the faith they would need for the trials ahead.

While there are more Catholics in the United States now than ever before, many of that number are immigrants and converts. One out of every ten Americans is a former Catholic. Excuses cannot conceal the fact that these people stumbled on the difficult path down from the summit of consolations. As Chesterton said: “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.” By being faithful, one proves Newman’s maxim: “A thousand difficulties do not make one doubt.” It is too glib to speak of “losing” faith. Bernanos said pointedly: “Faith is not a thing which one ‘loses,’ we merely cease to shape our lives by it.”

Our Lord prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail so that he might strengthen the brethren (Luke 22:32). And Peter did precisely that right to the end of his life: “We did not follow cleverly devised myths. . . . We ourselves heard this voice from Heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain” (2 Peter 1: 16-18).

What Else is Leaving the Boston Chancery in a Taxicab?

    Nancy,

I did want to state for your information, that if the Cardinal does not swiftly reject this contract, through the Massachusetts 501 C3 "Let Catholics Work, Inc.", practicing Catholics are preparing to seek an emergency injunction in superior court against all the parties relative to the execution of this contract. The Cardinal Archbishop will not be the sole defendant in the action. Our attorneys are woking out the details as we speak. Any person or persons who will have to leave their jobs as doctors, nurses, healthcare providers will be invited to be a party to this suit which will seek damages.

As you know, Cardinal O'Malley has spent the last week circulating information within our Catholic networks to distort the facts and undermine the credibility of people defending our rights of Catholics to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to blockade Bryan Hehir's efforts to send poor women to an abortionist in a taxicab as part of the social justice mission of the Catholc Church.

If the Cardinal Archbishop of Boston need an ethicist to opine on whether forcing Catholics workers to give any woman, particularly a Catholic woman, any information that abortion is an option for her and make sure she has a ride to the abortionist, he is not competant to be in the role he is in and we will move forward in any way that we can to seek his removal from the Vatican. Quite frankly, we have no idea what other scandals are leaving the Chancery from a taxicab with his permission.

I want you to know that if we are unable to stop this abomination as we move national catholics into this argument, seek the assistance of the superior court, the Nuncio and the Vatican itself, we will ensure under the radar that as many women as possible who comes into Caritas Christi be given ultrasounds to see their babies and information that will lead them away from Bryan Hehir's abortion taxicab services.

    Best, Carol McKinley

    Cardinal Sean's blog post:

    http://www.cardinalseansblog.org/

To be perfectly clear, Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church. We are committed to the Gospel of Life and no arrangement will be entered into unless it is completely in accord with Church teaching.

    Details from the Boston Globe:

    http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/03/13/mass_regulators_ok_joint_caritas_centene_healthcare_venture/

The Connector Authority board, which oversees the Commonwealth Care program, voted unanimously in favor of the joint venture proposed by Centene Corp., a St. Louis-based health organization, and Caritas Christi Health Care Network.
The vote followed several closed-door sessions in which officials from Centene and Caritas, the minority partner in the joint venture, assured regulators that women will have "ready access" to family planning and reproductive services, an issue that sparked concerns from abortion foes and reproductive rights activists.
Among the written assurances are a pledge that medical staff operating under the Centene-Caritas insurance plan, known as Commonwealth Family Health Plan, will inform women of their healthcare options, including abortion. The insurers will also provide a toll-free customer service line, available around the clock, to inform women about where they can get contraception, sterilization, and other family planning services not offered in the immediate setting. In an emergency, a service representative will arrange transportation to the nearest appropriate facility, officials said.
The regulators promised to watch closely. "We will certainly monitor their performance," said Jon Kingsdale, the authority's executive director.

While I appreciate the opportunity given to Caritas Christi to serve the poor through this agreement, I wish to reaffirm that this agreement can only be realized if the moral obligations for Catholic hospitals as articulated in the Ethical and Religious Directives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops are fulfilled at all times,O'Malley said. "To assure me that this agreement will provide for the integrity of the Catholic identity and practices of Caritas Christi Health Care System, I have asked the National Catholic Bioethics Center to review the agreement and to assure me that it is faithful to Catholic principles."

O'Malley's FOCA and Abortion Taxi Services

There's a lot going on that I'm not at liberty to discuss at this juncture.

There are several things grassroots people need to do simultaneously.

Pick out five people in your network that you know will take actions and ask them to do the following seven things:

    1. Call your your local Bishop and ask him to clarify whether referring women to abortion hotlines and calling a taxi to get her there is permissible Catholic credo.

If you live in Massachusetts, find out where and you don't an answer, find out where he will be this weekend and go there physically, wait for the opportunity and then ask him. Take notes, get back to me with them.

    2. Send an email to the Nuncio asking him the same questions. Follow up the email to the Nuncio with a phone call asking him to intercede and assist us getting it heard before the Vatican.

    NuntiusUSA@NuntiusUSA.org

    202-333-7121.

    Fax: 202-337-4036

Most Rev. Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio

    His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

    00120 Via del Pellegrino

    Citta del Vaticano

    3. Write the Archbishop of Boston (cc the Vicar General) and ask him the same questions:

    archbishopsean@rcab.org

    Vicar_General@rcab.org

    4. Post the same questions at O'Malley's blog along with any other commentary that moves you:

    http://www.cardinalseansblog.org/

    Here was my post:

    So then, Cardinal Sean,

You are clarifying that it is doctrinally faithful for Catholic physicians, nurses and healthcare workers in the United States to refer women to abortion hotlines and call her a taxi to get her there.

This is permissible Catholic credo, is that correct?

And, Fr. Tad and Dr. Haas at the National Catholic Bioethics Center agrees that these referrals and taxi rides are morally ethical and consistent with the Gospel of Life?

We all want to be sure that you are responsible for spreading what you say is the truth across the nation.

    5. Contact five priests you know across the Commonwealth and ask the same questions.

If the Cardinal is going to misguide the faithful and lead them into sin and carnage, let us ask every Cardinal, Bishop, Priest to clarify and affirm and mislead the faithful with their Cardinal or correct the Cardinal's errors so that doctors, nurses, healthcare workers will not be led into betraying Christ and humanity at Cardinal O'Malley's say so.

    6. Call Mass Citizens for Life and ask them the clarify whether they intend to acquiesce to the Cardinal's Caritas abortion and taxi services or will they rise against him.

    7. Send CJ Doyle's press release around the internet to blogs and to our Catholic news services and encourage them to do the story.

CATHOLIC ACTION LEAGUE DENOUNCES CARITAS CHRISTI DEAL WITH COMMONWEALTH CARE

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized the Archdiocesan hospital network, Caritas Christi, for accepting a state contract, in conjunction with the Centene Corporation, to provide Commonwealth Care health insurance, which includes abortion coverage. The Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority Board awarded the contract this morning after Caritas/Centene assured the panel that women will have “ready access” to timely family planning services such as abortion, sterilization and contraception.

The Catholic Action League called the contract “a significant defeat for the pro-life movement, inflicted not by secular society, but by the Catholic Church in Boston.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle stated: “What remains of the Catholic character of Caritas Christi has now been fatally compromised. The partnership in which Caritas Christi is one of the two principals will provide ‘ready access’ to abortion, which the Catholic religion condemns as ‘an abominable crime’. ”

“It is now clear that the Archdiocese of Boston has spent the last week cynically misdirecting Catholics and the general public with empty assurances that Caritas Christi would not collaborate in abortion. If a woman with a Commonwealth Care card walks into a Caritas Christi hospital seeking an abortion, she will be directed back to her health plan -- the Caritas/Centene partnership -- which will not only arrange for the procedure, but if necessary will provide transportation to the facility which performs it.”

“With Caritas Christi now thoroughly embedded in the culture of death, we are now facing the end, in Massachusetts at least, of Catholic medical resistance to abortion and contraception. This tragic state of affairs is the personal responsibility of the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O'Malley, who not only failed to stop this contract, but who endorsed it while making unsupportable assertions implausibly denying what everyone else knew -- that the contract required participation in the deliberate killing of innocent unborn children.”

    *****UPDATE

The Cardinal has issued a new statement. Since Caritas let the cat out of the bag, he's finished saying there will be no abortion referrals. His statement says that while he appreciates the opportunity for Caritas employees to serve poor woman by sending her by taxi for abortions, he's waiting for the Bioethics Center to render an opinion on whether this is honest to God Catholic credo.

Personally, I'd like to know what else Bryan Hehir has leaving by a taxicab from the Chancery that the Cardinal hasn't sought advice about.

    I digress.

It is absolutely CRITICAL to keep up the phone calls and communications to priests, bishops and forward the seven point action plan above to five people and ask them to send it to five people.

Oh, and one more thing. If you know any wealthy people, circulate an email telling them to let the Cardinal know they'll cut off his life's blood and oxygen - the money - if he doesn't put the kibosh on the Caritas Abortion Taxi Services.

I'm feeling a bit relieved for more than just the obvious reasons. Earlier this afternoon when my lawyer gave me the $$$$$ it was going to cost to file the injunction, I had a mean case of guilt. Donors have pledged the money (which I haven't collected but it is pledged) but I had a mean case of guilt about spending that much of their hard-earned cash in this economy.

Pick up the phones, get emails going, faxes and fight hard tomorrow kiddies. The hardest you've ever fought.

The difference between sneaks and snakes is a couple of letters

Since it's a day before the Commonwealth Care contract is awarded, those of us doing a disservice to the Church in Boston are on the edge of our seats waiting on the Cardinal to to post the opinion of the National Catholic Bioethics Center affirming there is no material cooperation or sins of omission in the Catholic religion if you refer a woman seeking an abortion to third party who'll facilitate her getting one.

    I can't stand the suspense!

When it comes to proabortion politicians, everyone and their mother and their Bishop finds out the details and stands in the public square and hammers at them.

But there is a handful of people across the entire country who are willing to do what is just and right when a Cardinal Archbishop and his auxiliary Bishops are lying about their initiatives and the teachings of the Church.

    But woe to Catholics United.

    I've been thinking.

What Obama and Sebelius and FOCA people need is Cardinal O'Malley to let every Catholic in the US of A know that there will be no abortion referrals at any hospital in the United States if FOCA passes.

    People will believe him.

Think about it. Cardinal O'Malley can follow his comments in the newspapers by circulating an entry on his blog that says "anybody telling you FOCA has anything to do with abortion referrals is a Benedict Arnold to the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ".

All I can say is, if they ever start building incinerators for the Jews or anyone else the country decides are inferior people, Cardinal O'Malley and Caritas will be right there to help them out. He can tell them it's the new shrine for the Gospel of Life and these are the principles that must be promulgated as they have been for 2000 years. Nobody will ask questions to get the details of the people who go in but never come out.

    Really. What gives?

It's the employees of Caritas who'll be forced into giving the woman the green light.

Is it acceptable for everyone faithful to the Magisterium to say you don't know the details of the Cardinals abortion referral service?

    Where are our Bishops?

Where is Cardinal George who said hospitals will shut down if Catholic employees are forced into collaborating with abortion?

Is the Nuncio a complete farce?

    This is involving killing children.

    Killing children.

    I don't get it.

Cardinal O'Malley is withholding the details so people will be ignorant and he won't be compelled to articulate what we all know happens in a doctor's office at Caritas when a woman asks to be referred for an abortion.

How could anyone claim they don't the details of how a woman will get from the doctors office at Caritas to the abortion clinic?

    It is irrational.

Certainly, if this is true, no Catholic can't form an opinion about the complexities of FOCA because we don't know how it will work. We don't have the details.

Further, how could it possibly be that Seblius, Pelosi, Obama are more complicit in acts of abortion than Cardinal O'Malley and Caritas Christi?

Pelosi (et al) being a party to legislation that will send the funding to the Commonwealth who will send it to the Insurance Company who will give it to Caritas who will give the money and the woman to a partner who will contract with the physician who will do the abortion could not possibly be an offense against the Catholic faith.

Look how far Pelosi is up the food chain of complicity, and Obama is even further up the food chain of complicity than Pelosi.

Any kind of defense for the unborn is eradicated with Cardinal O'Malley's logic.

There are a less than a handful of men willing to stand up in this country against a corrupt Chancery after the sex abuse scandal? God help us.

My email box as 4368 emails and I'm buried, but I did want to say that several people have written asking about the injuction against the Archdiocese, whose authority it is to marshal Catholic ethics at Caritas. We decided to wait until the contract is awarded before proceeding to spend anybody's hard earned cash on a lawyer to seek the injunction in Superior Court.

After reading today's Globe, if the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority Board doesn't know the kind of people they are dealing with and factor the dishonesty into their opinion, I'll be very surprised.

    Let's see what happens tomorrow.

I also wanted to post my email last evening to the Board encouraging them to scratch beneath the surface of Caritas and the boys at the bunker.

Lastly, I've posted the news release of one man in the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts willing to stand up and be counted for women and children.

    More work to do...stay tuned!

    ***************************************************************

    XXXXX,

I wanted to share a few more things with you.

I've had several priests, deacons and lay ministries in the diocese forward me emails coming from Chancery employees affirming the general message containing the Cardinal's promise that the Caritas-Centene venture will not refer women out their system for abortions, nor will they give any information to women seeking an abortion that doesn't pass the muster of two doctrines of the Catholic Church, Humanae Vitae and Evangelium Vitae, which as you would imagine, forbid abortions.

I don't know about you, but Catholics are trying to figure out how the Cardinal's statements could possibly coexist with the statement of Caritas Christi and the provisions of abortion the Commonwealth has made crystal clear.

I've spoken to Caritas spokeswoman Theresa Prego, I've asked the Cardinal's spokesperson Terry Donilon, the Cardinal himself, the Vicar General of our diocese, I've asked members of the Board of Governors at Caritas - and they are refusing to answer specifically how they envision carrying out the requirements of the contract without giving the woman asking for information, instructions, referral to an abortionist and the phone numbers we know it's going to take to get her there. I worked in Ob-Gyn for ten years and I was pretty specific with each of them about the dynamics that take place between the woman and the healthcare worker and asked them point blank to clarify the actions that will take place behind the closed doors of the exam room when the woman expresses she wants an abortion. They are evasive, dismissive and hostile.

This information is obviously important to me because my interests are the thousands of Catholic healthcare workers whom the Cardinal Archbishop has a duty to preserve the practice of medicine without conscience violations or having to quit their jobs.

But, the information is equally important to you for different reasons. Below is an excerpt from the Cardinal's blog that is the general syntax of his internal emails flying through our Catholic networks:

    http://www.cardinalseansblog.org/

To be perfectly clear, Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church. We are committed to the Gospel of Life and no arrangement will be entered into unless it is completely in accord with Church teaching.

You may find it most interesting to make the phone calls tomorrow to the Cardinal, Caritas, the Board of Governors, tell them you have the Cardinals statement and are confused. Ask them to clarify same specifics about the dynamic inside of the exam room at Caritas when a woman expresses she wants an abortion. Take good notes of their behavoir.

Quite frankly, with all the experience I've had with Cardinal O'Malley and his staff over various things in the past five years, I think you will find it to be a very informative exercise.
When you're done with all of them, ask yourself if these are people you can rely on to be forthright, honest and true to their word.

Also, I don't know if you are also aware that Caritas Christi has been refusing to reveal the identities of the Board. In fact, they've refused to file their 2008 annual report with the Secretary of State's office in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Funny thing about the word "sneaks", you change a couple of letters around and you've got "snakes".

Lastly, of note in the Cardinal's statement is the customary insult to those of us who are righteously protecting our childrens' heritage - we're "doing a great disservice to the Church". I'm sure you'll find it has a familiar ring to it. It's the same thing they told sex abuse victims when it was their turn to deal with the problems these folks have with the doctrines of material cooperation.

    God Bless,

    Carol McKinley

    CARITAS CHRISTI STONEWALLS ON ABORTION

The controversy is growing over the decision of Caritas Christi to seek a state contract as a health insurance provider in a program which includes abortion coverage. A story by Michael Paulson in today's Boston Globe contains revealing information about the refusal of Caritas Christi to either specifically affirm Catholic moral teaching or candidly explain the provisions of the Commonwealth Care contract.

Paulson wrote: “Caritas has repeatedly refused to answer questions from the Globe about the proposal. Yesterday, the hospital network declined to say what services are prohibited under Catholic teaching, how the Caritas hospitals currently respond to patients who seek such prohibited services, or how Caritas proposes to handle requests for such services under the Centene deal. The state contract requires that the venture provide coverage for abortion.”

Paulson also wrote on the Globe website today: “…we have repeatedly attempted to get Caritas to explain how the arrangement would work. Caritas, which has at least two communications people in-house and a crisis p.r. consultant too, has thus far refused to offer any explanation, not only of the proposal, but also of current practice at the chain’s six hospitals.”

The Catholic Action League called the Globe's findings “a startling indictment, from an unexpected source, confirming our worst fears.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle stated: “Everything we need to know about the Caritas Christi/Centene Corporation partnership and its deal with Commonwealth Care was apparent in this morning's Globe. Caritas, which refuses to release the names of its board of governors, won't even publicly say how it handles requests for abortions now -- without the requirements of a state contract.”

“If Caritas actually intended to accept tax dollars while evading state demands for abortion coverage, every voice on the political left would be raised against it -- in the media, in the Legislature, and among the advocacy groups. Instead, we have heard nothing but silence from the usual adversaries of the Church."

“It staggers the imagination that anyone can seriously believe the assertions by the Archdiocese of Boston about Caritas and abortion. The only solution is for Caritas to withdraw from the contract."

What is true, cannot be false

I've been inundated with calls and emails from people involved with the diocese (including priests) who told me about the communications they were getting from the boys in the bunker at the Chancery.

The Cardinal wants to assure everyone that the abortion, contraception, in vitro fertilization, sterilization and other family planning services the Commonwealth is requiring and in fact Caritas itself admitted they would provide "IN and out of network" are false rumors being spread by people doing great disservice to the Church.

Nobody of course is buying it and we've all been working hard getting our concerns heard in the right places... and waiting on the edge of our seat for the report by the ethicists at the National Catholic Bioethics Center.

I've informed the Board awarding the contract of the pending opinion and asked to defer a decision until the Cardinal releases the opinion of the Bioethics Center which they said they would take under consideration. Considering the seriousness and loss of the conscience protections, etc...

The Cardinal's intellectual dishonesty is what it is.

Below is CJ Doyles press release from today.

    TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2009

On Thursday March 12th, the Massachusetts Health Connector Authority -- the state agency responsible for the Commonwealth Care Health program -- will award a contract to a new Commonwealth Care health insurance provider. As of last week, the low bidder was the Caritas Christi/Centene Corporation partnership.

The Health Connector Authority has stated: “All health plans in Commonwealth Care offer the same health benefits.” Those benefits include abortion - with a $50 co-pay.

Assertions to the contrary notwithstanding, neither the Archdiocese of Boston nor Caritas Christi have the power to arbitrarily exempt themselves from the provisions of the law or the requirements of the Health Connector Authority. The only solution consistent with Catholic respect for the sanctity of innocent human life is for Cardinal O’Malley to insist that Caritas Christi immediately withdraw from the Commonwealth Care contract.

Please call Cardinal Sean O’Malley at 617-782-2544, and/or e-mail him at SDiago@RCAB.org and urge him to insist that Caritas Christi withdraw from the Commonwealth Care contract. This is the only way that the Caritas Christi hospital network can avoid collaboration with abortion, sterilization and contraception.

Also, please contact the Apostolic Nuncio, and ask him to apprise our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI of this grave scandal which is afflicting the Church in Boston. The Apostolic Nuncio is the Most Reverend Pietro Sambi. He can be reached at 202-333-7121, and at his e-mail address: NuntiusUSA@NuntiusUSA.org
