LOS ANGELES — At the end of “Manhattan,” the celebrated movie romance from 1979, a teenager played by Mariel Hemingway delivers some good news to the 42-year-old television writer, portrayed by Woody Allen, with whom she has had a long-running sexual affair....

That was then.

Roman Polanski’s arrest on Sept. 26 to face a decades-old charge of having sex with a 13-year-old girl stirred global furor over both Mr. Polanski’s original misdeed and the way the authorities have handled it — along with some sharp reminders that, when it comes to adult sex with the under age, things have changed.

Manners, mores and law enforcement have become far less forgiving of sex crimes involving minors in the 31 years since Mr. Polanski was charged with both rape and sodomy involving drugs. He fled rather than face what was to have been a 48-day sentence after he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor.

The mores of the 70's didn't consider sexually exploiting children as anything more than ill-mannered. It was entertainment worth filming for Oscar material in Hollywood.

In 1978 officials argued that the plea agreement would spare Mr. Polanski’s young victim the notoriety of a trial. But the soft deal was also in tune with the more permissive times, when sex with the under age was often winked at, especially among entertainment world sophisticates.

The mother of the 13-year-old was cocktail partying permissive mother who handed her child over to a Hollywood nutcase without any chaperoning or inquiring about his intentions.

In a further conclusion that appeared to shed blame on the victim, it said, “There was some indication that circumstances were provocative, that there was some permissiveness by the mother,” who had allowed Ms. Geimer to spend time with Mr. Polanski. And, in a conclusion that might particularly jar readers today, it pointed toward evidence “that the victim was not only physically mature, but willing.”

After all, what mother would question a 43 year old pulling up his his Porsche and picking up their 13 year old? You simply blow kisses from the door and get back to finding out when the next party is.

Irresponsible parenting is part of pedophilia. Saying it out loud shouldn't be offensive. Accepting money and keeping your mouth shut, saying you don't want him prosecuted are the very things that kept the Church pedophiles under the radar.
There are kidnappings and random acts - I'm not speaking about those. In situations like the Polanski case and priest pedophiles, parental misfeasance and dysfunction is 90% of what victims are chosen in these kinds of situations. (Polanski's victim had already been sexually active at the age of 13.)

The probation officers quoted a pair of psychiatrists as saying that Mr. Polanski was not “a pedophile” or a “sexual deviate.”

As one of the culture warrior of sluts, Whoppi Goldberg,describes it "It isn't rape-rape."

Catholics are very interested to see what they do with Roman Polanski.

Perhaps John Geoghan's cell at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley is available. Feces in your food, prison guards leaving your cell door open, letting a homicidal maniac loose and looking the other way could be in Polanski's future.

Hollywood wouldn't take too kindly to that. Imagine the turmoil on "The View".

Bill Donohue on the Mad Rush to Defend Roman Polanski

Bill Donohue joins the chorus of Catholics fascinated by the rise of a forgive and forget 30 year old child rape charge crowd.

The Catholic League has long suspected that, in many quarters, the outrage over priestly sexual abuse has had more to do with the status of the accused than the crime itself. Now the evidence is indisputable: a child can be drugged, penetrated and sodomized—and the guilty can cut and run—and still maintain hero status. Provided he is a celebrity.

Actress Debra Winger showed up at the Zurich Film Festival “to honor Roman Polanski as a great artist, but under these sudden and arcane circumstances, we can only think of him today as a human being.” Either that or as a child rapist. She was not alone: the Zurich Film Festival jury proudly displayed red badges reading “Free Polanski.” It was also nice to know that Woody Allen, a man who speaks from experience, came to Polanski’s defense.

Whoopi Goldberg showed off her usual brilliance when she declared that Polanski’s crime “wasn’t rape-rape.” No, only priests are guilty of real rape. Noted photographer Otto Weisser agrees: “He made a little mistake 32 years ago.” That’s right—it’s only a big mistake when priests do it. Richard Cohen of the Washington Post also notes that it’s been “over 30 years” since Polanski molested the girl. Similarly, movie critic Tom O’Neil exclaims that it is “mind-boggling why they’re still pursuing this.” Yet there is no statute of limitations afforded priests—men long dead have been accused of crimes extending back to the 1920s

Harvey Weinstein is so noble: “We’re calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation.” The terrible situation, of course, isn’t what Polanski got away with—it’s his pursuit by the authorities. “To put him on trial or keep him in jail does not serve society in general or his victim in particular,” says journalist Anne Applebaum. She, and others, would carry more weight if the “he” included priests.

No wonder so many Americans look upon the celebrity worshippers with utter disdain. Double that for Catholics.

Polanski won't be experiencing the Kangaroo Courts and System of Justice Catholic priests are treated to when any drunk and druggie suddenly "remembers" he was abused 30 years ago -- and Polanski entered a plea of guilty.

I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the geniuses to make the determination that the people in Hollywood don't know the proper names of genitalia and rush Sister Weartheppants in with an anatomically correct doll on every Hollywood set.

Perhaps Jeffrey Anderson will line up women who'll tell their story to the Boston Globe about their terror in movie theaters and they all repeatedly chant "Debra Winger the pimp".

Any minute now, they could pull together a group named "Voice of the Moviegoers" whose motto will be "keep the pervs, change your sheets" and call for withholding admission fees.

This world cannot possibly get any more insane.

Here are some of the facts: Polanski's crime -- statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl -- was committed in 1977. The girl, now 45, has said more than once that she forgives him, that she can live with the memory, that she does not want him to be put back in court or in jail, and that a new trial will hurt her husband and children.

Shame on the author of this piece of puke.

Police arrest wife beaters, child rapists or murderers whether or not the victims want the criminal arrested or they don't. In fact, most times the victims are ashamed and don't want the publicity. That doesn't stop society from seeking and demanding justice.

He can be blamed, it is true, for his original, panicky decision to flee. But for this decision I see mitigating circumstances, not least an understandable fear of irrational punishment. Polanski's mother died in Auschwitz. His father survived Mauthausen. He himself survived the Krakow ghetto, and later emigrated from communist Poland. His pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered in 1969 by the followers of Charles Manson, though for a time Polanski himself was a suspect

Oh well then. He should be given a get out of jail card. This rich Hollywood king had hardships in his life. I guess that's what socialism is. The rich and famous movie and sports stars rape and kill and are heroes in the secular press.

There's no much mercy for the impoverished who commit crimes. Our prisons are filled with them.

As they should be.

It took 30 years, but pedophile Roman Polanski arrested

Polanski fled the US in 1978 after pleading guilty to unlawful sexuality with a 13 year old.

He's been avoiding entering countries with extradition treatise with the United States for 30 years.

France has been protecting Polanski for decades and the Swiss has called his arrest a farce of justice.

One only has to imagine the public outrage would be if they said these things about an accused priest.
