After the revelations of this Florida conference and the story in today's Globe on a Boston priest who got caught in a prostitution sting, I'd like to know exactly what it is they are teaching in the Archdiocese of Boston at St. John's seminary.
Permit me to explain what I mean.
Here's what Bryan Hehir's colleague in the conference is teaching about human sexuality to gay Catholics:
We begin by standing beside gay people as they hear the voice of the Lord that summons them to life and happiness. We accompany them as they wrestle with discovering what this means and how they must walk. And this means letting our imaginations be stretched open to watching Brokeback Mountain, reading gay novels, having gay friends, making that leap of the heart and the mind, delighting in their being, listening with them as they listen to the Lord.
You have to really translate this into what they would teach heterosexuals to see how absurd it is:
We begin by standing beside heterosexual people as they hear the voice of the Lord that summons them to life and happiness. We accompany them as they wrestle with discovering what this means and how they must walk. And this means letting our imaginations be stretched open to watching Pretty Woman, reading prostitute novels, having prostitute friends, making that leap of the heart and the mind, delighting in their being, listening with them as they listen to the Lord.I'll spare you the analogy on
Why bring up sexuality at all? It's supposedly a.. Eucharistic Conference.
Wouldn't you be talking about the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion? Worthy conduct to receive the Eucharist?
Something isn't right there in the brains -- and moreover pants - of the characters involved in the conference.
If a priest talks up Confession and Adoration, he's doing it.
The same goes for prostitution, promiscuity and booty calls.
This is the time for private detectives.
Fr. Bryan Hehir's most recent conference scandal scheduled in Bishop Lynch's has many people wondering just how far Cardinal O'Malley lets his priests go before he intervenes in scandalous behavior.
As the Catholic Church is the middle of a tornado of accusations that local Bishops and the Vatican do not take priests trolling for sexual partners seriously, including children, what could be worse than a Cardinal and an Bishop enabling a Conference of speakers who encourage sexual arousal and promiscuity?
Encouraging priests to be sexually active is the first step
How can anybody who cares about humanity, much less God, ignore these basic principles?
This amounts to constructive permission of a Cardinal, Bishop and priests to participate in a booty call conference.
Why is it that the sexual abuse scandal reformation of the Catholic Church doesn't yet have the processes in place to get immediate intervention on dangerous scandals when they involve sexuality?
This is just not acceptable.
Readers have been emailing and posting questions about the efficacy of putting the paper trail under the noses of the Papal Nuncio and the Roman Curia.
Some influential people have even suggested that the Bishops, the Cardinals, the Vatican will rally around the abusers of power and fortify them.
That doesn't excuse us from putting the paper trail under their nose. This isn't a contest of wills or a game that will have a winner and a loser. We've just got to do the right thing and Trust in Christ. The outcome is immaterial.
Put the paper trail on the Cardinal's desk, the papal nuncio's desk, the appropriate dicastries at the Vatican and ask for Bryan J. Hehir's removal. In fact, the Chancellor of the Boston Archdiocese should also be held accountable.
