I Desire Mercy - UPDATED

The ongoing discussions about Rachel Zoll's article have flushed out publicly the thrust of the theological problems we have been facing inside of our parishes, schools and community.

Discussion with Elizabeth Scalia sheds decent light on the counterfeit church being erected.  The theology she is using to warehouse her gig is "I desire Mercy", from St Faustina.   I wanted to dissect it so we can be armed for future discussion.

So you'd have to believe that Scalia, who desires mercy, picked up the article written by Zoll and draws the conclusion she needs to tell the world that Zoll is a bigot.

For the record, Zoll is not a bigot.  She in fact expressed to me that as a religion reporter, she is reading with interest and has has gained more perspective on orthodox Catholics and this has been an insightful and pleasant experience.

Scalia, completely out of tune with the spirit of the article, decides she's going to give her readers her judgment call about Zoll and the new breed of nasty, hateful Catholics who want their religion taught to them.

While trying to explain to Elizabeth Scalia that her clouded judgment is inciting the malice against Christ's Church that is intimidating people into proclaiming the teachings, she said that wasn't her intention but she was standing by her words.

Yes, there are a handful of extreme Catholic bloggers to whom Jesus might say, “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy. . .’.”

And, because they are extreme types, they will each assume that that line is meant for the “others”—
the ones against whom they burnish the swords of righteousness; the ones they lampoon, often, unto snotty incoherence"

That one line from St. Faustina can get played over and over in some heads.  But lampooning innocent people and their intentions to make Christ's Church and Her teachings look like hateful things said by nasty people  isn't exactly what St. Faustina was talking about.    It is taking away the teachings that inspire us to seek the Sacrament of Confession and the Divine Mercy St Faustina was talking about.   This is why the Sacrament of Confession is an essential part of the feast day of Divine Mercy when we granted indulgences and Divine Mercy.     You won't be seeing people Elizabeth Scalia is spiritually forming lined up on Divine Mercy Sunday because they are instead going to her to get kindness.

Elizabeth wants to emulate kindness, humility and gentleness and we need this spirituality in the Church.   Each of us is animated with gifts we are perfected and sponsored and prayed for by great Saints who had these gifts when they were alive and served Christ's Church with them.

None of us are perfect with these gifts, she admits, but she wants everybody to have the same gifts she is perfecting and mocks others

There are also many great Saints who carried swords.  The next time you run into a Bush basher, remind them that St. Joan of Arc not only carried a sword, she led an army of people who lampooned people with them in a thing called just war.   People who use mercy as the symbol of their spirituality ought not to be mocking other Catholics whose gifts and symbols of those gifts are not the same as her own.

What St. Faustina meant by "I desire Mercy", was Christ's reminder that in our personal lives, when people malign, insult and hurt us,  we apply the virtue of "charity" to nurture mercy in our heart.

If you read the thread, you will see a comment by "Bender" that really demonstrates how backwards the unsound theology is.

In the scenario they are proposing, "wrong lessons" are taught to our children and "right lessons" are withheld from the person espousing the "wrong lessons". This leaves both people in these circumstances ignorant of the truth.   What is astounding to me is that they see this as the sign that they are doing God's work. This is impossible.

Maybe a little parable will help put things into better perspective.

There was once was a father who taught his children and his servants the moral theology of the Catholic Church. He brought his children to Our Lady of the Puppets because it said "Catholic Church" and it was animated with lively music and entertainment for teenagers.  He sent them to CCD where they learned the teachings of the Church are antiquated.  Everyone has sex as teenagers and if they need condoms or an abortion their god desires mercy so call 1-800-Caritas Christi or Partner's Health Care and the Cardinal and Jack Connors will fix you right up.  They helped many people at Our Lady of the Puppets to understand that they can vote for people who legislate abortions.   They desire mercy.  His eldest son, let's call him Prodigal, started visiting the local brothel, being licentious, drinking, partying, etc.   The other children in the house started to wonder if this was okay and thinking it looked like fun.  After repeating moral laws of God, the son was getting madder and madder at his father.

There was another 'family' who lived next door who was always out in the public square saying this man was mean old snooty curmudgeon.  Other people in town started being mean to the father.   Prodigal loved the woman next door.  She was so kind, he thought.  Prodigal kept comparing this woman to her own father.  Prodigal grew angrier and angrier at his own father until finally one day he did not want to hear what he was doing was wrong and left his father's house.

The woman next store was wild.  She went to the local church and gossiped about how the father purged Prodigal from his own house.   She tarred and feathered the father until he was no longer welcome in his community.  There is no joy and love in people like this, she told everyone in cyberspace.   Other parents who also teach their children the morals of the Catholic Church were afraid to say anything because the woman had influence and they did not want to be tarred and feathered like the father at Our Lady of the Puppets.

One day the priest at Our Lady of the Puppets was transferred and the new priest was all fired up for leading souls to the Sacrament of Confession and Divine Mercy St. Faustina was talking about.  He dusted off the Catechism started teaching the people moral theology in it and about Humanae Vitae and about God's Mercy in the Sacrament of Confession helps us to amend our lives and be better prepared to understand the truth when it is spoken to us because it awakens our consciences.    Father noticed more and more people asking him for the Sacrament of Confession.  He was pleased.  But the woman was very upset with Father and told everyone in the parish that father was cold-hearted snotty extremist and he has to learn the meaning of  "I desire mercy".   The more and more the woman complained about Father, the mobs in the pews started swearing at him and telling him they were not going to give him any more money.   The mobs called the local Bishop, lets call him Cardinal Spineless, and telling him they were not going to give any more money to the Cardinal's Appeal.  Cardinal Spineless and his chancery bureaucrats told Father that he couldn't teach that kind of stuff anymore but to teach people how to rely on the woman for kindness.

People stopped coming to church because they can be kind in the grocery clerk and they can be kind to trees and plants.     They hung quarts around their necks for energy and power and they drew circles in their yard and walked around in circles thinking about the peace they are creating on the planet and how Jesus must be so pleased with them.

They link to the faith of Stephen Colbert and John Lennon.

Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try.  Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too.  No need for greed or hunger.  A brotherhood of man.   You may say they're dreamers.  But they're not the only ones.  They hope some day you'll join them and the world will live as one.

They didn't intend to whip up malice to shut people up and they don't know how that all happened.  They're just trying to be nice and the father of Prodigal and the priest who teaches the Catechism who is making people hate the teachings of Christ's Church and keeping them away from the mercy of the women at church.

See anything familiar with Elizabeth's Scalia idea of "I desire mercy"?

The prodigals are being keeping from conversion by whipping up a frenzy against our priests and prophets.    They have replaced God in the hearts of His people.

Elizabeth and others seem to think we are trying to get them to go back on their 'words'.  They think we are upset and angry and have hurt feelings about the names they are calling us.   That used to work so well.

But they better pull out the Book of Revelation to see where it's going.   We no longer have attachment to whether they accept or reject what we are saying or ridicule or mock or slander.  We're doing it because our eyes on on Our Beloved.

n.b.  Before anyone reads the parable and sucks on their charity crack pipes starts to throw around slanderous assertions about my children - for the record - all of them have done none of the things described in the story of the prodigal.  I was referencing the story in the Bible.       Your poor judgment has caused enough people anguish, especially Our Lord.

Good day to you, ma'am.

Um...the "wrong lesson" would be what your own kids pick up from your own crappy attitude.

And you'll get sympathy from me when you actually care enough about your kids to stay home and take care of them yourself. You whine and bitch and moan about how everyone else is fucking up your kids, but you can't be bothered to give them the time of your all-about-yourself day. You can't blame the fact you're a crap mother on other people, sweetie. If they're learing stuff you don't like, here's a clue -- stop dumping them off on other people and teach them yourself. Take some responsibility for the children you brought into this world.

You're all sooo whiny -- so typical of your shitty generation -- it's all about youyouyou 24/7, you're so entitled, so selfish, and so spectacularly dull witted.

You want your perfect little church? Fine. All yours, girlie. Now go pay for it yourself. Stupid little twats like you have been pushing decent folks out of the pews for years now. Nothing new. We'll go and take our kids and our money elsewhere.

You will get your day in front of God and you can tell Him all about how you were better than everyone else in the world and how if everyone just did what YOU told them to do, the world would be perfect. Whatever. If you were my kid, I'd die of shame to have raised such a piece of shit.

You must be from Elizabeth Scalia's blog?

Fruit of the vine of America Magazine?

Welcome to our blogging community.

Vade retro Satana. Nunquam suade mihi vana. Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas.

Carolina Bound said...

Cute, sweetie, but you're not the first to gibber at me in your cut-and-paste Latin. Some of us actually can do that without the cut-and-paste job -- must be that ubercrappy education we got in Catholic school...

I'm no longer Catholic. People like you showed me that the only things the Catholic Church ever do well are raping, stealing and bullying.

You win all the prizes, honey -- all the gold medals in the Catholic Olympics. You're going to get your 100% perfect Church, you're going to stamp your feet, throw your tantrums, and get your way. And then what? Who are you going to blame all your problems on then?

What a whiner you are -- what an appalling little whiner.

Get a life, lady, and stop blaming your problems on everyone else. Do your kids a favor and grow the fuck up already. I'm tired of picking up the tab for the misbegotten offspring of people like you.

Carol McKinley said...

Defintely not Elizabeth.

Doesn't even look like this rises to the level of Commonweal or James Martin.

Michael Sean Winters?

The Latin is a prayer.

See, here's another one:

Amen.

Yes, sweetie-pie -- I can read it.

You're not real quick on the uptake, are you...??

Have a lovely life, dear. I actually feel sorry for you.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through the belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness
Of the Creator of Creation.
I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth with his baptism,
Through the strength of his crucifixion with his burial,
Through the strength of his resurrection with his ascension,
Through the strength of his descent for the judgment of Doom.
I arise today
Through the strength of the love of Cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In the service of archangels,
In hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In prayers of patriarchs,
In predictions of prophets,
In preaching of apostles,
In faith of confessors,
In innocence of holy virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.
I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.
I summon today all these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel merciless power that may oppose my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.
Christ to shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me abundance of reward.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I pray this prayer Lord for me and for each one of my children - R., M., A. I place them into your Providence to guard and protect them.

Dear. we're all familiar with the Lorica of St. Patrick.

Have you nothing original? Just spells and incantations you've cut-and-pasted?

Do you even believe in God? Why don't you act it if you do?

Blech. You know, there's really no point in bothering -- you're another narcissistic, ego-driven, cold-hearted, ugly-minded little brat.

You don't believe in God. You have placed things of men above Him.

Cut-and-paste away, little girl.

No one's paying attention anymore.

Bender said...

Someone who was curious enough to learn more about you told me that my name was mentioned here, so I thought I'd take a look.

I'm saddened by what I see.

I do have to apologize though about suggesting that you are engaging in self-popery. It is clear that you are not a pope unto yourself. Rather, you fancy yourself a modern-day Luther.

So to be so blunt and, yes, rather snarky, which comes across as mean and uncharitable. But sometimes a 2x4 across the nose is the only way to get the point across.

You will know them by their fruits. The fruits of the Holy Spirit include charity, generosity, kindness, gentleness, patience, modesty, joy, and peace.

Do we see any of these fruits exhibited here? Sadly, no. It is a hotbed of anger and resentment and bile. Certainly no peace, certainly no joy in the faith, and not a whit of patience and gentleness toward those you believe to be wrong.

For your own sake, rather than using prayer in such a vain and impious fashion, as a weapon against someone who has said some obnoxious things here, seek the graces of patience and peace of mind, seek the gifts of the Holy Spirit of wisdom and counsel to not so lash out at others. Believe me, your rage hurts you far more than it does the targets of that anger.

And Carolina Bound -- thank you, that is what I meant by the "wrong lesson" and it is incumbent upon all parents to be the primary teacher of their children. But with you too, sadly, that is where my praise must end. You strayed way over the line with the rest of your remarks, as I suspect you know. Such profane and obnoxious language is not necessary to get the point across.

I say this as one who has himself used intemperate language on occasion. The spiritual works of mercy of bearing perceived wrongs patiently and forgiving those who cause injury are things that I must remind myself of often, so I know of what I write.

So, ladies, to both of you, I wish you well.

Bender said...

Correction --

"So to be so blunt . . ."

That should be "Sorry to be so blunt . . ."

I hope that you come back to finish reading what is actually fueling the rage you see in this poverty stricken soul.

It is you, Elizabeth, Commonweal and others who are mischaracterizing people, Christ's Church and the things you see around you.

You are less informed about your own faith and what is happening around you spiritually than you are about me, my faith, my role as a mother, my children and the love and joy and zeal that is expressed and lived.

Carol McKinley said...

The prayer is not speaking to her, it is speaking to the spirit that is animating her. This spirit is not rebuked and she does not receive the benefit of the prayer if it is not delivered.

You are giving advice you received somewhere along the way in zen or yoga type of practices. These rely on mortal disciplines.

Just like your mischaracterization of Rachel Zoll, which you used as a license for hitting people with two by fours, it is another mischaracterization and rash judgment to say I ever felt a bit of anger towars this woman.

There was never an ounce of anger.

Looks like the sissy demons are in full force today.

The Elizabeth Scalia's and Bender's are the reason why the church has drifted from sound teaching. They are the wobbley spined enablers.

Jerry said...

Wow Carol. You have a way of bringing out the best in people!

What seething hatred for Our Lord and His catechism. Would they froth at the mouth if you insisted that history teachers get the dates correct? Or that math teachers know how to multiply?

The hypocrisy is all too evident. These folks want to remake the Church in their own self image, pandering to their lusts, but you get guillotined. Why don't they just start their own club, like Luther or Calvin did? Insatiable rage.

Carol McKinley said...

I think that is an excellent question Jerry.

What exactly is their opposition to requests to have authentic Catholic moral theology taught?

Seems like a rather innocuous request if you ask me.

Carol McKinley said...

Before I finish the substance of this post, I wanted to shed some light on Bender's positions and post.

This whole thing started with Elizabeth's "family" and other self-appointed queens and kings of "charity" calling Zoll a bigot.

Zoll was a gracious and interested impartial journalist. She told me that as a religion reporter, she was pleased that the blogs were giving her some greater insight into orthodoxy.

It is an outrageous injustice to that woman's reputation and the malice these brought down on Zoll's head is despicable.

If she has ever stepped into a parish, she probably has been ripped to shreds and is shocked to learn that faithful Catholics have long been driven out by these same bitches of "charity".

This is what our parishes have turned into. People think they are the doling out mercy when are ridiculing, maligning, and hitting people who want their faith taught to them with 2 X 4s. They have taken over every ministry and I am sad to say that practically all of them are women.

You will read above characterizations of me as a mother who shirked her duties teaching the faith.

For the record, I opened a business out of my home so that I could be with them. I have never been on the dole, I own my own home with a decent booty in equity in it and I make a decent living. My children were taught their faith by me. I spent 10 years teaching CCD so that I could go up the system with them and I did youth ministry so I could be with them.

So there is another mischaracterization of Benders.

Her batting average is zero.

What happens when mothers teach their faith at home is these "merciful" folks you see in the com boxes who have filled every ministry inside of our parishes make teens who seek the Sacrament of Confession feel like a freak. When our children reach teenage years, there is an implied message that the priest has assigned these people because they know the faith and their mother doesn't.

My children know their faith but they have a bad taste in their mouth because the parishes have been taken over by lunatics. I'm not worried they are screwed up or will lose their salvation - God will have mercy on the victimized. But the priests who ridiculed and berated them when they were waiting in line for confession will be subject to God's fury.

You are taking the keys of knowledge to God away from people and lots of luck with it. You better put the diary of St. Faustina aside and check out the passages that describes Christ's feelings about you.

Bender also claims I have rage and no joy, no love for Christ - etc., which were taught to her by Scalia and that I use prayer as a vain and impious fashion.

But she has no idea what is happening in front of her eyes or why.

Many of you have dropped me an email, phone message expressing concern. I want you to know that I am completely at peace and I want you to be at peace.

Let me tell you a little story.

Earlier this week, I had a dream. I "felt" the presence of a huge umbrella-like structure over my head. Other people were under this structure with me though I didn't know them and none of us seemed to be aware of each other. I kept looking up wondering what in Sam Hill it was but I didn't say it out loud in my dream. But somebody responded out loud that it had always been there and then escorted me out from under it. I was outside looking in, still wondering when whoever it was told me it was Mary's mantle. As my thoughts were about never having thought of the mantle as structural presence before, I said out loud, I've got to get back under it but I couldn't. The person wouldn't let me.

Carol McKinley said...

I think that is what is happening. I'm out from under and flaming arrows are coming my way.

I am completely detached from any emotions about what is happening.
I feel called to witness that no matter how bad it gets, you keep on going. Priests who have been persecuted and maligned and ridiculed will see that not only is it not a 'suffering' to be a sponge for these kinds of blows, it strengthens your faith and resolve to teach those who want and need to be taught and the fire of love in your soul burns brighter.

This is a spiritual war. I is not about the people but the principalities and as you can see, they have a lot at stake and there will be grinding and knashing of teeth. You've got to call down the powers from Heaven. Surround yourself and your family. It is not advisable to take on any rebuke of a spirit unless you are pretty seasoned and armed with massive amounts of protection. I am posting it so you will see the process.

Here is another mischaracterization of Benders.

They might read this, load up their "charity" crack pipes and start blowing the smoke of their "mercy"

Be not afraid.

St. Thomas More once said the brothers of the patriach Joseph could never have done him so much good with their love and favor as they did him with their malice and hatred.

p.s. The Boston Blogging Community has a lot up their sleeve and a ton of work to do this weekend. Please keep us in your prayers

You are quite stunningly illiterate, aren't you? Also, that highly unbalanced, garbled piece of nonsense you left over at First Things indicates a level of mental instability that's genuinely frightening.

You are disturbed, my dear. You are not mentally well, and you need help. That you openly admit to this sense of detachment from reality is quite telling.

I'm honestly beginning to wonder if your children are actually in danger and if something should be done about it. You are not well, you're clearly coming undone, and it's only a matter of time before this ends, very, very badly.

Yes, I got it. And so will CPS.
