Sister Carol Keehan: Every Christmas Story Has a King Herod

As the USCCB was lobbying to stop the passage
of the life-threatening socialized medicine Bill on Christmas Eve, saying it “violates the longstanding federal policy against the use of federal funds for elective abortions and health plans that include such abortions—a policy upheld in all health programs covered by the Hyde Amendment as well as in the Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program—and now in the House-passed ‘Affordable Health Care for America Act,’” -- Sister Carol Keehan and the initiative she set up to to whore for the abortion industry in healthcare, (under the auspices it is Catholic) were executing the orders for slaughtering of the innocents.

Catholic scholars say their statement reflects a different application of church teachings against “cooperation with evil,” a calculus that the legislation offers a way to extend health insurance to millions of Americans. For the Catholic hospitals, that it is both a moral and financial imperative, since like other hospitals they stand to gain from reducing the number of uninsured patients....

“We have known for quite some time that the Catholic hospitals and also the nuns are really breaking from these hard-line bishops and saying, ‘This really is our goal: to get more people into health care coverage,’ ” said Representative Diana DeGette, Democrat of Colorado.

National healthcare that will withhold treatment to seriously sick and old and our country's poorest of the poor. Yes, we must watch out for those nuns. If you're ever terminally ill or spending your last days on earth getting palliative care in a full hospital and you see them coming with a needle to open up your bed for tomorrows tonsillectomy, know they have the goals of getting more people into healthcare coverage - bless their hearts.

The most offensive part of these developments is only known to prolifers on the frontlines of the trenches in the defense of life: The formula for "cooperation with evil" is the brainchild of Cardinal O'Malley, Cardinal McCormick, and others, who were possibly given their lethal licenses from the National Catholic Bioethics Center. Though, Cardinal O'Malley and his corrupt henchmen at the Boston Chancery refused to release the NCBC report, O'Malley's publicity stunt in the public square made it appear as if the NCBC gave him the green light to create an entity to hire abortionists and drive women to them and enter into the lucrative contracts at just the right arms length.

And in practical political terms, some Democrats — including some opponents of abortion rights — say that the Catholic hospitals’ relative openness to a compromise could play a pivotal role by providing political cover for Democrats who oppose abortion to support the health bill. Democrats and liberal groups quickly disseminated the association’s endorsement along with others from the nuns’ group, other Catholics and evangelicals.

In February, the Vatican launched an Apostolic Visitation to find the religious impostors among US Catholic Religious.

There's a game played at the Vatican that reminds me of the scene from Casablanca when Rick Blaine shoots and kills Major Strausser so Victor Laszlo and Ilsa can board the get-away plane. Captain Renault, knowing full well "who done it" sends his troops out on a wild goose chase to "round up the usual suspects".

With millions of lives at risk for being cruelly terminated prematurely, they had two years of watching Sister Carol Keehan lobbying in the public square to create a perfect race for Obama, the socialists and abortion industry right on television, the newspapers and the internet and several of us sent the papertrails to Rome.

To permit Sr. Carol Keehnan to erect this concentration camp in the public square under the name Catholic while the Vatican is pretending they're looking under beds for religious impostors who threaten Catholicism and life itself, is a monument to their lack of sincerity.

The third and fourth Bishops in Ireland have resigned this week - and the fifth is trying to hold onto his See and his reputation in the wake of the horrific coverups. Aiding and abetting rapists and murderers is a compromise that's unacceptable.

Indignation when people get caught with the long papertrails of coverups, dog and pony shows about how they've turned a new leaf, they're proactively looking for the usual suspects -- it is getting old and tired.

Sr. Carol Keehan is a menace to the lives of children, the sick and the poor. She's actively participating in turning the country over to the death panels. She's as treacherous to the lives of children as Mengale in the Second World War.

What price will we all pay for the Vatican's coddling of treacherous people wearing their costumes of habits and collars?

In the meantime, the children of people who trust the Bishops of Massachusetts and New Hampshire are as safe as the taxicabs leaving Caritas Hospitals heading for the abortionists O'Malley hired - and the National Catholic Bioethics Center "blessed".

God help us all.

Subject: Eleventh Hour Appeal

June 20, 2009

IHS

Dr. Haas, Fr. Tad,

In light of the National Catholic Register's story this week, I wanted to make an eleventh hour appeal to both of you.
What is absolutely clear from the information reported is that the deal, as it exists on paper right now and as it was structured to function once operations commence on July 1, is unquestionably (and now admitted by the Archdiocese to be) contrary to the teaching of the Church. What is also clear is that no amount of "renegotiating" the contract can cure the immorality, because (a) the new entity will be performing immoral services and (b) Caritas owns 49% of the new entity and therefore will benefit from the immoral services, no matter how much Caritas distances itself from the actual performance of those services. Nevertheless, it is evident that the Archdiocese intends to proceed with this deal, after making some cosmetic changes to disguise what is really going on.

"Caritas" has taken a partner to infuse cash, taken a 49% interest in the new corporation, disguised themselves under the name CeltiCare, hired the abortionists, hired bilingual people to man the phone lines to give out the number of the abortionists they've hired, compeled employees of Caritas to stop guiding patients with Catholic doctrine and instead give out the phone numbers of their CeltiCare employees, placed Planned Parenthood and NARAL as their advisory board in this arrangement whom they've promised to give spying priveleges of Catholic employees (if necessary inside of examination rooms) to ensure "compliance".

It appears from the story, that Rev. Hehir is assisting in the theological interpretation of the Caritas Contract. I wanted to state, once again, for the public record that Rev. J. Bryan Hehir is a dissenter of Humanae Vitae and Evangelium Vitae and that he is working with several colleagues at the Kennedy School of Government who are notorious avengers of Catholic teachings and the Catholic Church. If you perform due diligence, you will find this group worked to elect Oama and are now using their various appointments to assist in carrying out the attack against the Catholic Church in America - all while wearing the virtuous veil of "helping the poor". "Helping the poor" was used by their political predecessors throughout history in every other country that has fallen to communism, socialism and every other imprisonment and oppression against the final frontier of religious freedoms now rapidly deteriorating in the United States.

"Caritas" has bid on a contract that compels carrying out moral evils upon the unchatechized, the unsuspecting, the economically depressed and women emotionally distraught by their unplanned20pregnancy and having irrational thoughts about "what to do". "Caritas" has promised, in writing, that they will either find somebody within the "Caritas" network who agrees to carry the moral evils out or they will hire subcontractors to carry out the moral evils, send the patients there to have them performed and complete those transactions by paying for them from the pot of money this lucrative contract brings to "Caritas".

We initially hoped the National Catholic Bioethics Center was tapped, in good faith, to theologically index the list of reasons why the Cardinal must block the venture. Least among these reasons, the realiztion that the Catholic Cardinal has got to find "somebody" to do the abortions, he's got to find a way to paper the trail so that he can send the women there and then pay for those services (less the patient's co-pay) - - and how he cannot spiritually exploit all these people because their birth certificates don't have the name "Caritas" on them. We had fervently hoped that any opinion coming from the NCBC legally defines "what" and "who" are "Caritas"?
(The papers at the Secretary of State's Office? The Cardinal? The Board of Directors?)

We also hoped that the NCBC will not dishonestly leave out of their evaluation the out most important "Caritas" corporation in this "venture" - the one carrying out this contract, "CeltiCare" -- whether what actually happen s to all the "people" involved, i.e., whether "CeltiCare's" contracts with abortionists violates
‘Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services’, whether "CeltiCare's" phone lines where operators give out the numbers to the people are "referrals" and whether a Catholic Cardinal (or any other Catholic in the United States) can enter into a contract that includes moral evils and then hire people to perform those moral evils when they don't want to sin themselves.

This, theologically, is the question you are answering - Can Catholics, when we are faced with economic hardships, accept contracts that bind us to perform moral evilas and then hire people to perform those moral evils? Can we invest in the abortion industry, embryonic stem-cell industry or prostitution in Nevada?

We know that you know the answers to these questions. Why are we three months later without the answers?

Finally, in Mr. de la Torre's open letter to Obama published in Business Week in January of 2009 (http://www.businessweek.com/managing/content/jan2009/ca20090123_798447.htm?chan=careers_managing+index+page_top+stories), he positing questions about "defining access" in a "complete overhaul of our healthcare model", he asks the following questions:
0A
-"
Should the elderly and the very poor continue to have access that others do not? Does "access" define all medical care without reservation?"

-"
Do we want to shoulder the tremendous costs of medicine that meet the very highest standards?"

-"
What should be the goals for infant mortality, cancer survival rates, and other such metrics?"

Sadly, these questions and others in the thesis leave the discinct impression that the interests in "serving the poor" will end should any of them become old enough or sick enough to be in the negative columns in the Caritas cash cow financials. I'm underwhelmed by the virtues of the servitudes to the poor implied therein.

Fr. Tad, Dr. Haas, I feel it is my baptismal duty to plead with you in this eleventh hour: Walk away from the table before you scramble and confuse the teachings of the Church to give Rev. Hehir the paper to cover up the spiritual and physical atrocities inherent in this contract. The scandal it will create (and has created) to the Cardinal, to the Church, to the trust of Catholics who know that20you know that there is no conceivable arrangement that will comport this contract with Catholic teachings and the Cardinal must block the venture.

From the ashes of the systemic flaw that responded to salacious crimes against children by getting opinions that swept what was really happening under the carpets, you cannot be the vehicle for this arrangement. I implore you, in the Name of Jesus Christ, to walk away - no matter what the personal and professional cost. Dust your sandals and get out of town and let those actions speak for themselves.

In the service of Christ,
Carol M. McKinley

One Only Wishes One Had a Tomato

For several months, Boston Catholics have been on a tour of Malebolge.

Malebolge, is the eighth circle of hell in Dante's Inferno, reserved for frauds and deceivers. It's comprised of ten ditches that are divided to inflict punishments according to the severity of the sin. The ditches run the gambit from the run of the mill seducers and panderers to the most severe, people who con other people through lies. Those who try to pass off false things as real things. We've spent a great deal of time, in particular, in bolgias (ditches) three and eight.

Bolgia Three: Simonists (sinners guilty of selling church offices for personal gain) are punished here. They are turned upside down in large baptismal fonts cut into the rock, with their feet set ablaze by oily fires. The heat of the flames burns according to the guilt of the sinner.

Bolgia Eight: In this trench, the souls of Deceivers who gave false or corrupted advice to others for personal benefit are punished. They are constantly ablaze, appearing as nothing so much as living, speaking tongues of flame.

In this week's National Catholic Register Article updating the scandal, Cardinal O'Malley's abortion contract architect, J. Byran Hehir, has tipped the hand on "who" has been guiding the "opinion" of the National Catholic Bioethics Center and I fancy, the "conclusion" of that "opinion".

ed elli avea del cul fatto trombetta (and of his ass he had made a trumpet 21.139)

Speaking to the Register June 17, Father J. Bryan Hehir, secretary for Health Care and Social Services with the Archdiocese of Boston, recognized that there was a problem that needed to be solved by July 1.

“We tried to solve the first part of it last week,” he said. “Caritas Christi will not do procedures that violate the ‘Ethical and Religious Directives’ and will not refer anyone for such procedures.”

“The second part is the larger framework Caritas Christi has entered into,” Father Hehir said. “That needs to change so that it will accord with Catholic identity.”

The article summarizes the various reactions of Catholics to "the first part" with CJ Doyle's unraveling of the falsehoods inherent in the "solutions" ~ Caritas has cloaked itself with a new name (CeltiCare),has lined up abortionists, hired bilingual phone operators to man the phone lines 24/7 to hand out the numbers of their abortionists and with the hundreds of millions of dollars that will flow through their bank accounts, they are even going to pay for the abortions. They are claiming to be virtuous in this arrangement because they are not going to "mark up" the services, add extra fees to the abortions, like they do other services and medications.

Some pro-life activists continued to be skeptical, especially in reaction to the other part of the joint statement, contributed by Dr. Ralph de la Torre, president of Caritas Christi. When a patient seeks an abortion, de la Torre said, “Caritas health-care professionals will be clear that (a) the hospital does not perform them and (b) the patient must turn to his or her insurer for further guidance.”

“The cardinal’s statement is contradicted by that of Dr. de la Torre,” said C.J. Doyle, executive director of the Catholic Action League in Roslindale, Mass. “In sending a patient seeking an abortion back to her insurer, Caritas will be sending Commonwealth Care members to the Caritas/Centene partnership, which will not only procure the abortion, but lists Planned Parenthood as a reproductive services provider.”

Perhaps Fr. Tad's comments have been taken out of context, but they too certainly appear as if the charade of doing abortions under a different name is going to be sanctified, even by him:

Asked to comment on the wisdom of mergers in general, Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, director of education for the bioethics center, advised: “Such mergers can be pursued as long as the Catholic health-care provider is clear about the meaning of its Catholic identity and remains intent on upholding that identity in all the negotiations and arrangements leading to the merger and subsequent to its realization.

“This means that the Catholic institution (and the merged institution later) will be bound by the provisions of the ‘Ethical and Religious Directives,’” he said. “The possibility of scandal must be meticulously avoided.”

Fabricating and twisting the teachings of the Church to make it all appear as if the Caritas abortion business arrangement is a "meticulous" avoidance of scandal? (In fairness to Fr. Tad, he's simpy giving general guidance - but unless the NCBC's opinion states that Caritas must exit from the entire contract, one has to assume that however Caritas/CeltiCare is restructured is their idea of a "meticulous avoidance of scandal")

This isn't going to fly in Christendom.

For those acutely aware of the people who will die in the performance of the contract the Cardinal is blessing, the souls conned and baited into hell - the scandal train left the station four months ago.

Meanwhile, the Bishops, not a peep from any of them on this scandal, have assembled in a bunker in Texas.

I'm reminded of a piece Fr. Wilson wrote about six years ago -

I watched Bishop Wilton Gregory catechizing that press conference about the National Review Board’s sexual abuse report and how it’s about "the children, the children, the children," whereas it is really about the bishops, the bishops, the bishops. This episcopate will never do anything but spin the problems; won’t ever settle down to address the hard work of renewal.

Watching the bishops’ conference in action is like viewing the film of a train wreck over and over again. With bright-colored clowns hanging out the train windows, waving and blowing kisses. One only wishes one had a tomato.

American Life League Coverage

Judie Brown at the American Life League has been fearlessly posting over the last several days about the Caritas abortion referrals.

PANDORA’S BOX HAS NOTHING ON CARITAS CHRISTI

The facts about this “Commonwealth Plan” are disturbing on a very basic level. The Massachusetts Commonwealth Care plan is the very type of "universal health-care insurance" that President Barack Obama wants to impose on the rest of the country. Indeed, proponents of national health-care insurance always point to the Massachusetts program as a model of a successful plan.

Second, in order to be an approved health-care provider eligible for payment under the Massachusetts plan, the law requires that the hospital must provide the full range of “reproductive services," such as abortion, sterilization, contraception and counseling that recommends such services. All of these things are directly contrary to the teaching of the Church. This is what we have to look forward to from Obama's proposed national plan.

Furthermore, Caritas Christi cannot participate in the approved plan without agreeing to provide the mandatory “reproductive health services” that are in direct violation to Catholic teaching.

In order to avoid the direct provision of immoral services, CC has entered into a partnership with Centene, under which Centene will do all the dirty work and CC will claim that it is not doing anything contrary to the teaching of the Church. While this might sound like a little bit of compromise for the sake of the common good, it is no such thing! Cooperation with evil is not a part of Catholic teaching. It never has been and it never will be.

As a matter of fact, in Massachusetts law, Caritas must provide counseling that includes immoral "reproductive services" and must arrange for patients to receive those immoral services from Centene, even to the point of transporting patients to abortion facilities. Both Caritas and Massachusetts regulators have publicly confirmed this fact as Massachusetts Citizens for Life pointed out.

Furthermore, it is indisputable that, even if Caritas Christi itself does not perform any immoral services, its partnership with Centene means that CC will be profiting from the immoral services rendered by Centene. One can easily come to the conclusion that the entire partnership deal with Centene is driven solely and exclusively by financial motives.

This certainly begs the question, how could a Catholic entity such as Caritas Christi become embroiled in such a fiasco? How many evils will a Catholic health care provider accept as part of a deal that most assuredly was made in Hell?

CARITAS CHRISTI’S DEAL WITH THE DEVIL – II

CJ Doyle quote:

• In response to an inquiry from the Catholic Action League, Brian Delaney, Director of Communications for CeltiCare, stated on May 11 that, “CeltiCare’s program has been approved by the Massachusetts Connector Authority. Under the contract, CeltiCare will be operational July 1, 2009, and will meet all the [s]tate’s requirements under the Commonwealth Care program, including providing family planning services as appropriate.” Assertions to the contrary by Cardinal O’Malley notwithstanding, this is the third time since February 26 that a representative of the Caritas/Centene partnership has affirmed that the Commonwealth Care contract will include abortion and contraception.

As we mentioned yesterday, American Life League is well aware of the healthcare plans being orchestrated by the Obama administration. We are equally aware of President Barack Obama’s track record of using Catholics to his advantage and their willingness, for whatever reason, to be used. Obama’s relatively short history of appointments of totally pro-abortion Catholics, the Notre Dame scandal and other such events lead us to suspect that if the Archdiocese of Boston remains silent and does not demand immediate dissolution of the “joint venture” agreement, the death knell for genuine Catholic health care will have been sounded.

The evil that has gone unaddressed by Cardinal O’Malley, and persists in the context of unanswered questions and the absence of policies based on Catholic doctrine, is scripted by the devil himself. Of that there is no doubt. American Life League cannot be silent while such a dastardly plan moves forward with nary a whimper.
I somehow had missed the highlighted citation from CJ Doyle's last press release. The deception of the Cardinal, Chancery officials is breathtaking.

Do visit ALL and continue to spread the word, forward it to your priests, Bishops, forward it to the Nuncio, Rome, encourage intervention as though children's lives depended upon it. Because they do.

Catholic Action League on the Caritas/Cardinal O'Malley Abortion Scandal

CARITAS CHRISTI/CENTENE CONTRACT ON TRACK FOR JULY 1st

In the continuing controversy over the decision of Caritas Christi Health Care - a network of six Catholic hospitals affiliated with the Boston Archdiocese - to seek a state contract which will require abortion referrals, there have been several new developments.

* On May 4th, 2009, CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts announced that Richard D. Lynch had been appointed Plan President and Chief Executive Officer. Based in their new corporate office in Brighton, CeltiCare is a managed care organization that will provide health insurance to Massachusetts residents enrolled in the Commonwealth Care program. Celticare’s participation in the Commonwealth Care contract comes as a result of the partnership between Caritas Christi and the Centene Corporation, whose wholly-owned subsidiary, the Celtic Insurance Company, is the parent organization of CeltiCare.

* In response to an inquiry from the Catholic Action League, Brian Delaney, Director of Communications for CeltiCare, stated on May 11th that “CeltiCare’s program has been approved by the Massachusetts Connector Authority. Under the contract, CeltiCare will be operational July 1, 2009 and will meet all the State’s requirements under the Commonwealth Care program, including providing family planning services as appropriate.” Assertions to the contrary by Cardinal O’Malley notwithstanding, this is the third time since February 26th that a representative of the Caritas/Centene partnership has affirmed that the Commonwealth Care contract will include abortion and contraception.

* It has now been more than two months since Cardinal O'Malley requested an advisory opinion on the contract from the National Catholic Bioethics Center. On May 14, Fr. Tadeuscz Pacholczyk, Director of Education for NCBC, stated that “The NCBC is not able to comment regarding on-going, confidential consultations. Your best source of information would probably be the Archdiocese or perhaps Caritas Christi.” Later, when asked if the opinion had been given to the Archdiocese, another NCBC official told the League “I’m not at liberty to say”.

* On May 3rd, at the annual convention of the Massachusetts Knights of Columbus, the State Council repudiated a resolution by former District Deputy Joseph B. Craven Jr. opposing the Caritas contract with Commonwealth Care. The State Council ruled the measure “rejected” and “out of order”, an impossibility under parliamentary procedure. State Officers claimed that an unnamed Archdiocesan official (reportedly one of the Cardinal’s two secretaries), stated that the resolution contained unspecified factual errors. Deacon John Baniukiewicz then told assembled delegates that “We can’t be more Catholic than the Church”, and “We can’t tell the Cardinal what to do.” The measure was defeated.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “It is clear that the Caritas/Centene partnership is proceeding with all deliberate speed towards the July 1st start-up date of the Commonwealth Care contract, while the Archdiocese continues its efforts to suppress Catholic opposition to the arrangement. Given the prolonged uncertainty about the nature, or even the public availability of the NCBC advisory opinion, one might reasonably surmise that the Cardinal’s request for their involvement was a public relations tactic intended to buy time and diffuse pro-life opposition. Catholics need to keep the pressure up on the Archdiocese to cancel the contract, and they need to keep Rome informed.”

IHS

Dear Prolife Friends,

As you know, several months ago, Caritas Christi placed a bid on a lucrative contract to provide health care services that included victimizing the uneducated, distraught and poor with morally evil medical practices (including abortions with a $50 co-pay).

They were subsequently awarded the contract after Caritas officials gave assurances to the Commonwealth, in writing, that Catholic employees will be forced to counsel indigent Massachusetts residents that contraception, sterilization, in-vitro fertilization and abortions are the cures to their problems and predicaments. Caritas officials have given written assurances that the conversations and practices of Catholic employees will be monitored to ensure that they are counseling the poor with immoral guidance, convictions offensive to God and opposed to natural law, their consciences and their faith. Implied of course in this "monitoring" is the silencing and disciplinary actions against Catholic healthcare providers which will take place. Caritas officials are permitting monitoring of Catholics to discipline them should they respond to a pregnant woman seeking an abortion with the lifegiving and life-sustaining truths of the Catholic Church. This contract will not only eradicate the vocations and conscience protections of Catholics who wish to practice medicine without violating their conscience in Massachusetts, it eradicates the safe environment where a poverty stricken Catholic woman finding herself with an unplanned pregnancy will be responded to with the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

When Boston Catholics raised objections to the spiritual exploitations and demoralization of the immortal souls involved in a Catholic Cardinal hiring subcontractors to carry out the killing of infants required by a contract he wishes to sign and the theological errors inherent, Cardinal O'Malley published a statement which affirmed he was informed and educated about the contract, discussions took place and that persons saying that unethical and immoral services would be provided to the poor through the contract with Caritas were untrue and "doing a disservice to the Church". Since this contradicts the contract itself and public statements and written assurances given by Caritas officials, questions persisted and Cardinal O'Malley agreed to obtain the opinion of the National Catholic Bioethics Center to "assure him". That opinion has never materialized.

While Cardinal O'Malley has given the impression that the contract is on hold until the experts at the Bioethics Center render an opinion, Cardinal O'Malley and team at Caritas, led by Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, are proceeding full speed ahead in preparations for the hundreds of thousands of patients whose primary care physicians will be Caritas employees. They are hiring employees, appointing directors, officers and leadership. They have created several corporations that will hire the employees to carry out the moral evils upon the indigent to effectively inoculate the Cardinal and the Caritas Board of Governors from the victimization of the poor and the murders of the unborn children they have assured the Commonwealth they will carry out.

* MarketWatch (press release) - USA, CENTENE CORP-- In March 2009, we were awarded a contract to manage health care services for Massachusetts residents who lack access to traditional public or private health insurance. This contract will be operated through a joint venture between our subsidiary, Celtic, and Caritas Christi Health Care. Effective July 1, 2009, the two entities will serve the Central, Northern, Boston and Southern regions operating as CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts.

* BOSTON, May 04, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts (CeltiCare) today announced that Richard D. Lynch has been appointed Plan President and Chief Executive Officer for CeltiCare, effective May 1, 2009. Mr. Lynch will be based in the CeltiCare corporate office in Brighton, Mass., and will report to Frederick J. Manning, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Celtic Group....CeltiCare Health Plan of Massachusetts, Inc. is a managed care organization that will provide health insurance to Massachusetts residents enrolled in the Commonwealth Care Program. A partnership between Celtic Insurance Company and Caritas Christi Health Care, CeltiCare offers a new form of local managed care that is tailored to the needs of Massachusetts' progressive healthcare system. Effective July 1, 2009, the plan will contract with the Commonwealth Care Health Insurance Connector Authority (Authority) to serve low-income, working adults who are not eligible for Medicaid.

Many Boston and national lay Catholics have contacted the Cardinal to get clarification on his assertions that this arrangement does not violate Catholic ethics. He has been unresponsive to those attempts.

Though the Caritas Board of Governors has refused to identify themselves, one of the members, Joe Fietelberg (who also happens to be the Boston head of the local Chapter of the Knights of Malta), identified himself to a Catholic benefactor who is a friend of mine. My friend had been fully briefed and apprised of the material facts of the contract over the past few months. Mr. Fietelberg repeated the Cardinal's assertions that "nothing has been signed" and attempted to explain new facts which are not yet public. If I understand Mr. Fietelberg's reply, in response to concerns raised, Cardinal O'Malley has restructured the organization chart to shift Caritas from a majority shareholder to a minority shareholder in the corporations set up to carry out executions of moral evils. I have sought clarification from Mr. Fietelberg and am awaiting his response. (exchange below).

Children of the poor are about to be massacred at the authorization and Cardinal's directives to Catholic employees and healthcare workers so that the diocese can be the beneficiaries of a lucrative contract. Not a single Bishop in Massachusetts has raised an objection. Several national Bishops, the Nuncio and the Holy See have been apprised. It does not appear that we have the system in place to protect children from being abused with the collaboration of Chancery officials, even if that abuse involves murder. The Cardinal responded by posting a character assassination on his blog about Catholics who don't need ethicist to index the theological errors in the situation, the spiritual exploitations and abuses to the poor, the obliteration of the right to practice medicine without violating our religion or the misleading of souls into temptations and debauchery.

This is a very disturbing situation. Let us rise to the occasion.

Call the Cardinal at 617-254-0100 and register your disapproval.

Arm yourself with the facts, send a letter to a dozen Bishops and Cardinals in the U.S. of your choosing and ask them to go to the Holy See and beg their intervention. Send a letter to the Nuncio, certified, telling him that the remote material cooperation of Chancery officials in the killing of unborn children is a far greater scandal than remote material cooperation with pedophilia. Ask him to seek emergency intervention in Boston as though childrens' lives depended upon it, because they do.

Forward this email to a dozen prolifers in your network and ask them to do the same.

Finally, pray for all involved, with special petitions to our precious Pope John Paul II.

In Christ, Carol McKinley

Dear Mr, Fietelberg,

For several months, I have been updating my friend _______________ about the contract awarded to Caritas Christi that requires abortions and other moral evils.

Our mutual friend __________ mentioned that he brought our concerns to your attention in a discussion as head of the Boston Chapter of the Knights of Malta. It is my understanding you informed ___ at that time that you are member of the Board of Governor of Caritas and responded to those concerns by providing him with the informative email below to assist his assessment of the situation. _____ graciously tried to help me understand, but I'm afraid it wasn't completely gelling, so I am writing to seek clarity on the missing pieces and questions he was unable to answer.

If I understand your email correctly, you are not disputing that the contract awarded to Caritas mandates abortion services and other services contrary to Catholic moral teachings be provided to patients. You do not dispute that Caritas has promised to provide family planning services (including abortion) in and out of network. You are also not disputing that Caritas has given written assurances that Catholic healthcare workers will be forced to advise an emotionally distraught woman seeking an abortion at Caritas where to obtain o ne, and to arrange transportation if necessary. You do not dispute that Catholic healthcare workers who for moral reasons would never advise and assist any person (including a pregnant and distraught woman) that abortion is an option will now have to quit their jobs, as it is a gravely sinful act and offense against God. Am I correct in my understanding of these issues? If there are new facts available now which were not published in the Globe, and which you believe ___, I, and thousands of other concerned Catholics are unaware of, could you share them?

You mentioned that Caritas now has "an outstanding Management team in place" great to hear that; however, I do not immediately understand how strong management will somehow allow Caritas to not violate Church moral teachings as part of the arrangement where those same managers have agreed to refer women to abortions. Could you explain further why you believe strong management will result in Caritas not violating Church morals, as the published comments in the Globe indicated those "strong managers” indeed plan to do?

You mentioned that the Centene-Caritas proposed plan would have Caritas be the majority, not the "minority" shareholder. Can you explain the significance of that? Does that somehow mean they will not be referring or transporting patients to get abortions-- thereby materially collaborating with evil--as committed in writing to the state? Is there some assessment or study underway to advise the Cardinal and Caritas on how many layers of legal entities or how many shares of stock might be held in the combined entity in order for a collaboration in the killing of unborn children to somehow be permissible? (If not, I would imagine that you have advised the Cardinal and the Board of Directors to take out a substantial directors and officers liability policy, as even one physician's livelihood that will be taken away would be a sizable award sought for damages?)

Forgive me, but we don't seem to be on the same page. The faithful who are objecting to the corporate involvement of an entity advising poor women to get abortions thought they were waiting for the National20Catholic Bioethics Center’s opinion on the moral issues associated with forming such a corporation as well as the effects upon the immortal souls of the Catholic physicians and healthcare workers who will no longer be able to advise the distraught woman that abortion is murdering her child--and who will instead be forced to give her resources on abortion written by abortion advocates. Is the National Catholic Bioethics Center rendering an opinion about how the Church might enter into the lucrative contract they'd like to sign by shifting Caritas’ ownership share in a combined entity whose services violate Church moral teachings and deprive babies of their fundamental right to life?

Again, forgive me, as I don't mean to stampede those working on this into assumed incompetency. However, in principle, I’d invite you and others involved to replace the services or practice of "abortions" with the practice of "pedophilia" when considering the moral implications of the agreement. Assuming we all agree that there is no number of layers or number of legal entities put between the Church and victims that would make it permissible to collaborate with the moral evil of “pedophilia,” then how could anyone envision this being permissible with the taking of an innocent life via abortion?

I look forward to hearing your perspectives on the questions I have raised.

XXX-Thank you for sending this along.

Here are a few missing pieces:

· The Globe wrote this early on before all today’s facts were available

· There has been no execution of the Connector agreement at this time. There is a clear intent to try and be part of this resource which principally serves the poor

· In the Centene-Caritas proposed plan Caritas would be the majority, not the “minority” shareholder

· Cardinal Sean has this under ethical review by the Church’s highest talent base

· Caritas now has had an outstanding Management team in place for one year which has a skill set that was missing

· FINALLY—none of us should let innuendo or inadequate information stampede us into assumed incompetency

Be assured that with my 1950s HC background I will never support a development which would injure our Church. Having said this I will also tell you that while at HC (Holy Cross) I learned to use the full power of judgment to find new ways to improve things while living within the Church’s standards.

See you in June,

However, planned parenthood made Caritas put their promises and writing and then released the content of those promises to the Boston Globe:
From the Globe:

The Connector Authority board, which oversees the Commonwealth Care program, voted unanimously in favor of the joint venture proposed by Centene Corp., a St. Louis-based health organization, and Caritas Christi Health Care Network.
The vote followed several closed-door sessions in w hich officials from Centene and Caritas, the minority partner in the joint venture, assured regulators that women will have "ready access" to family planning and reproductive services, an issue that sparked concerns from abortion foes and reproductive rights activists.
Among the written assurances are a pledge that medical staff operating under the Centene-Caritas insurance plan, known as Commonwealth Family Health Plan, will inform women of their healthcare options, including abortion. The insurers will also provide a toll-free customer service line, available around the clock, to inform women abou t where they can get contraception, sterilization, and other family planning services not offered in the immediate setting. In an emergency, a service representative will arrange transportation to the nearest appropriate facility, officials said.
The regulators promised to watch closely. "We will certainly monitor their performance ," said Jon Kingsdale, the authority's executive director. "We will not allow them to start up or continue if they are not in compliance."
As a measure of the underlying tensions, four board members emphasized the need for oversight.
"I remain somewhat concerned about implementation," said Nonnie Burnes, state commissioner of insurance and a former Planned Parenthood board member. "I am willing to support this as long as we have some way to monitor this" in doctor's offices and other healthcare facilities.

**UPDATE

Local pro-lifers here in Boston have told me that when they've written the Cardinal, he has sent back the following response:

"The Cardinal will not approve or allow any activities or procedures that are not in complete accord with Church teaching to be performed at Catholic hospitals."

The contract requires abortions be done to women, they've promised the abortions will happen. He has every intention of proceeding with this contract. He is setting up an elaborate power point presentation to get the woman from point A (Caritas Hospitals) to point b (the abortionist). He believes this is in complete accord with Catholic teachings.

Nobody acting in good faith would enter into a contract promising to carry out abortions, hire people to perform them, promise to get the women there and provide transportation if necessary and then make believe he isn't approving it or allowing it.

I think a lot of people are going to be shocked when this goes forward, because they sincerely believed he was putting kibosh on what is irrefutably against Catholic teaching, obvious to even the village idiots.

God Bless!

My Conversation with Sister Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association

I asked Sr. Carol Keehan point blank questions which she refused to answer.

Essentially, she said she herself would never do any of the things required of the contract and if I thought she would, I obviously have no respect for her. She said everybody knows abortion is an option.

Yes, Sister. Everybody knows. Everybody knows drinking is an option too. But people with sound judgment don't send the alcoholic with a case of Dewers to the AA meeting.

Our exchange is below.

Sr. Carol seems like woman who would appalled if she knew the details of this arrangement. It's clear to me she doesn't.

The people who will be miles away from what's happening are simply not thinking this through.

They think they are setting up a system that can hoodwink the insurance company and use the opportunity to talk women out of the abortions. That you can do in a Catholic hospital.

What they're doing now is taking that environment away and replacing it with a system that is going to force Catholic healthcare workers to CEASE AND DESIST from talking women out of abortions. They are replacing it with a system that is forcing Catholic workers to talk about abortion in a positive light and hand the women the phone number. And, they're promising that monitors will be watching.

They've made the Cardinal Archbishop of Boston a man who has set up a partnership to hire people to kill other people. They've told him it's ok to do it.

They've told the Catholics at Caritas its ok to do it. But when you ask them if they'd ever do it themselves, they tell you they're prolife and would never get involved in any aspect of killing anybody else. We have no respect for them if we would think such a thing about them.

It's too crazy to be of human origin. It's the devil, hiding truth, clouding judgment, taking advantage of naive people.

Also worthy of reading is Leila Lawlor's below post on this menacing debacle. The Cardinal's game playing has left her with doubts about the National Catholic Bioethics Center. I personally have never heard anything that came out of Father Tad's mouth that wasn't wholly consistent with the teachings of the Church in any matter and I cannot imagine him compromising truth. I do share Leila's sentiments about the foolishness of having to ask somebody whether Catholics can hire somebody to kill people and then point people in their direction.

It's giving the appearance of a disingenuous game. The Cardinal's statement that he "in order to assure" him, he hired the NCBC to review the agreement and "assure him" wasn't exactly helpful.

In order to assure me that this agreement will provide for the integrity of the Catholic identity and practices of Caritas Christi Health Care System, I have asked the National Catholic Bioethics Center to review the agreement and to assure me that it is faithful to Catholic principles."
Seems to many people that the Cardinal, who sits on the Board and helps fund the National Catholic Bioethics Center, has already given them the conclusion of their opinion.

The fight has not been kept far from the walls. The fight is inside the house.

I completely agree that the the culture of death has infested the walls within.

That is an unfair response Sister.

You have made an assertion that will affect thousands of Catholics and I'm asking you to doctrinally confirm your assertions.

It's one thing to be in a Catholic institution and speak to women who approach you in that context and it's another to direct a flow of hundreds of thousands of Catholics who are covered for abortion services and intend to get them - and compel our Catholic physicians to do what you would never do yourself.

You have told the public that it is ok for the Cardinal to hire somebody to kill people and it is ok for Catholics to pass out those phone numbers.

Answer the questions, please.

I am saddened by your response. I would never ask you if you had ever hired someone to kill another. As much as I want to work with you it does not seem possible, I have saved the lives of thousands of babies and never ever done anything to hurt much less kill anyone. You obviously have no respect for me if that is your response. Let’s pray for each other but no longer communicate.

Sister,

You didn't answer the questions.

Would you kindly answer them?

Can a Cardinal Archbishop hire somebody to kill somebody else?

Can Catholics then give them that phone number?

Have you ever done it.

That's what I want to know from you.

I am convinced few have complete information and I am concerned at the tone of so many comments about permission to kill etc. We are Church and we should talk these issues out with respect. What you are quoting is not what my understanding of the statement has to be. Also in todayE2s world, how many people do you think don’t know abortion is an option?
In my forty years in health care much of it in perinatology and neonatology, many women start out saying I can’t have this baby, I can’t afford it or I am too ashamed and because we are there for them in a loving and supportive way, we get a real chance to prevent the abortion. So many have been prevented because of this.
In any “service” that a provider does not provide, the person is sent back to the insurance company to have them deal with it. Often but not in this case the insurance company will tell the person that it is not covered or if it is what providers they can choose from.
No one likes to hear that someone is going to get an abortion, but if we stay in the business of Ob, we get a real opportunity to help women deal with this challenging time and often are able to save the baby. I am sure for our crisis pregnancy lines, it is an agony that never gets better to talk with someone who ultimately makes the decision to abort but if we don’t keep our call line open we can’t prevent so many of them.
My sense of this arrangement is not the same as yours but I do have faith in the integrity of the Archbishop. There is a difference is saying we don’t do that and hopefully they will ask why, and sending them back to their insurance company office. It is such a painful reality and our work together is the best way to be sure we have every opportunity for women to make another choice. Our example of providing services etc as well as a welcoming Church will do so much to change individual and public opinion which strengthens our pro life position. Sometimes it can be like walking a tightrope in order to have the opportunity to encourage life choices in pregnant women.
We may not see this the same exact way or even have the same information but I hope we can respect the goodwill we both have and the commitment both of us have to pro life. Thank you and God bless you . Sr Carol

Sister,

I'm not convinced you had complete information when you made your statements in the Boston Globe regarding the Caritas situation and I'd like to clarify your doctrinal assertions. We have thousands of Catholics who have expressed that this arragement will force them to quit their job.

Both Caritas and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has confirmed that Catholic employees at Caritas will be compelled to respond to a woman who is di straught about her pregnancy and wishes to terminate it by saying "Abortion is an option for you". Caritas has given written guarantees in writing that they will force Catholic employees to provide abortion information in a positive light and give them further instructions on how to obtain that abortion. The Commonwealth is now working out the details of how to monitor conversations of Catholic employees at Caritas to ensure they are complying with these orders. (please see citation from the Boston Globe below.)

Many of us are confused by your statements.

Can Catholics respond to people asking you to kill somebody by saying "I can't do that but here's the phone number of somebody who willl connect you to the right person?"

Have you ever responded to a distraught women who sought information about obtaining an abortion by giving her the phone numbers to get it or arranging for her ride?

Is it consistent with Catholic ethics for a priest to respond to a woman seeking information about aborti on by explaining the procedure and giving her the phone number to obtain it?

Is it completely consistent with Catholic ethics to respond to a distraught pregnant women by telling her abortion is an option for her and refer her to the phone number of people Cardinal O'Malley has subcontracted to kill the unborn child?

Is it morally ethical for a Cardinal Archbishop to create a partnership that is a subcontract knowing tha t the people employed by that contract are people that will assist and carry out a murder?

Thanks for the clarfications and answers to the questions. See below for the article and links.

Boston's Forced Aborting

The National Catholic Register has picked up the story of Boston Catholic employees of Caritas Christi who will soon be forced into describing abortions and other unethical procedures to stream of women seeking them and covered for them under the insurance plan Cardinal O'Malley has guaranteed is consistent with Catholic moral ethics.

According to Dick Powers, spokesman for the Massachusetts Health Connector Authority Board, which awards the contracts for state-subsidized insurance for low-income residents, the board unanimously accepted the Caritas-Centene bid after regulators received written assurances that medical staff will inform people of all options, including abortion.

I hate to say what is painfully obvious to people who care about the salvation of everyone: What on earth would possess a Catholic Cardinal to believe it is morally ethical for his Catholic heathcare workers at Caritas to give out the number of the employees of "Centene" to bait them into formal cooperation with abortion?

Also, some faithful prolifers have suggested that Cardinal O'Malley was shocked and caught off guard by the Caritas Christi abortion referral contract.

Unfortunately, that just does not comport with the facts.

On March 4th, the Boston Globe published a story that quoted Caritas saying they will provide family planning services, including abortion "IN and out of the Caritas network".

Later that day, Caritas and Centene Corp. released a one-sentence statement that said the venture "will contract with providers, both in and out of the Caritas network, to ensure access to all services required by the authority, including confidential family planning services."

The Archdiocese of Boston has not yet commented, and the explanations from the health care providers have not clarified how exactly this venture would mesh with Catholic teaching. (UPDATE: Connector Authority spokesman Dick Powers, asked about the issue by the Globe, today said "Health plans must provide covered services. Covered services specifically include abortion services.")

The Cardinal furiously got to work emailing Boston priests, deacons and lay Catholics claiming that no women would be referred out of Caritas Christi for abortion services and on March 6th, the Cardinal put up a post on his blog that said:

To be perfectly clear, Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church.

These are simply not the actions of somebody who is caught off guard and went on a pursuit of truth. The facts had already been published in the Boston Globe.

Furthermore, on March 13th, the Globe published that Caritas had promised the Commonwealth in writing that the medical staff of Caritas would "inform women of their healthcare options, including abortion".

Thereby ending the controversy about whether Caritas employees will be forced to inform women seeking abortions about abortions.

The Cardinal has not retracted his erroneous statements. The Cardinal is still posturing that people saying Caritas employees will be forced to talk about abortions in positive ways and send the women on her way with good wishes are "people doing a disservice to the Church".

Since we know he wasn't ignorant of the facts, the only other plausible explanation is that the Cardinal believes that if somebody approaches a Catholic expressing they want to kill somebody - we can't do ourselves but we can pass out information and instructions to somebody who can and will.

Prince of the Church or not, it is the duty of anyone baptized to inform the public of of the distortions coming out of the Boston Chancery, including the Cardinal's own blog.

The National Catholic Register story has dug up the political contribustions of Caritas CEO and Chairman of the Caritas Board of Governors. Not surprisingly, both officials support proabortion politicians.

Caritas spokeswoman Teresa Prego declined comment to Register questions, as did President Ralph de la Torre and James Karam, chairman of the board of governors. According to Federal Election Commission records, both officials have given generously to politicians who support abortion: Last year, de la Torre gave $2,300 to Barack Obama; from 2007-08, Karam gave $6,900 to Hillary Clinton for president and $2,000 to Sen. John Kerry.

Highly placed Catholics have made inquiries to clarify the Cardinals statement and the statements of Caritas and the Commonwealth which could not possibly co-exist and, the Cardinal, the diocese and Caritas has refused to answer those questions. Reporters have also asked questions and received no reply.

They've got something to hide. This is not how people act when they've been blindsided. This is not the conduct of people acting in good faith, including Cardinal O'Malley, whose credibility has been severely damaged.

The Register's reporter Gail Besse also found out that state regulators are finalizing the details of how Catholic employees will be "monitored"

If Caritas-Centene proceeds with its plan, state regulators and abortion advocates will be watching. “How compliance will be monitored is just being worked out now,” Massachusetts health authority spokesman Powers said March 16.

Andrea Miller, executive director of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) Pro-Choice Massachusetts, said her abortion advocacy group “vows to monitor” the Catholic hospitals to ensure that people have access to services to “protect them from pregnancy and disease …” In the past, NARAL operatives have made covert calls to hospitals, including Catholic ones, to see if personnel complied with a law to offer the abortifacient “morning after” pill.

We know that Cardinal O'Malley is already forcing Catholic employees to give out the morning after pill.

More confusing statements from Sister Carol Keehan, Catholic Health Association president.

The president of the Catholic Health Association, Sister Carol Keehan, has issued a response to the pro-life advocates who are upset with her statement praising two pro-abortion picks by incoming president Barack Obama.

She says nothing of whether a promotion of unlimited abortions performed at taxpayer expense degrades the competency of Obama's selections.

Keehan also claims that Obama and his selections will provide better health care for pregnant women and unborn children.

"They are committed to getting access to quality health care for all Americans, including pregnant women and their unborn babies," Keehan adds. "It is my belief that we ... will prevent more abortions by ensuring tangible health care for pregnant women and their unborn babies."

This is a great quote from a great prolife leader here in Boston:

William Cotter, head of Boston’s Operation Rescue, believes the archdiocese was taken off guard by the Caritas move. “But,” he said, “there’s been a terrible loss of credibility for the archdiocese. It must forego the potential financial gain and refuse this pact with the devil.”

Can The National Catholic Bioethics Center Crack Cardinal O'Malley's Code?

This week, there'll be plenty of mooching off teenagers at Chez McKinley.

I attended a wedding yesterday (my oldest was the maid of honor ) at the Colonnade here in Boston. Running around doing a few errands before the wedding, I lost my debit card.

Don't you hate when that happens? I even buy my two dollar coffee with my debit card.

But, before I left for the wedding, I had a nice little exchange with Henry Karlson, representing the cult mentality and Mark DeFrancisis representing testosterone free men that I believe is worth fisking on this beautiful Sunday morn. The cult mentality manifested itself in the usual and customary ways.

As "lay thugs" are all waiting around for the National Catholic Bioethics Center to "assure" Cardinal O'Malley's hiring of people to kill other people is morally ethical and permissible, respectable people and gentlemen have all kinds of quotes from theologians and saints to crack the code. Cardinals and Bishops indeed have the authority to kill, mame, rape, steal or hire people who'll do it to women and children.

In Henry Karlson's mind, Cardinal O'Malley's hiring people to kill other people is living out the fiat of Christ's words "do THIS in memory of Me" and the role of lay people is to consider it an honor to serve out these directives from "Princes of the Church".

After Christ's Rescurrection, when He gathered the Apostles to build the framework for the Catholic Church, Christ explained "You are Princes now" and how to set structures to give Nero leads and referrals, the Jews to Hitler, the unborn to their executioners.

The reason Christ handed Himself over to a painful death and execution was to renew the face of the earth with a civilization that doesn't surrender ideologically but tells others they can and should and pays them to do it.

The doctrine of the Sacrificial Lamb is, we don't let people kill us before we collaborate with the culture of death, we sacrifice people into it. Other people die spiritually and physically and we materially cooperate. That's what the Crucifix of Jesus Christ stands for in Henry Karlson's mind.

When the Aztecs buildeth the mountains, the Princes of the Church set up the pearly gates at the bottom of the mountain to flow the money and people through on their way up with the infants and virgins.

Any Catholic saying "hey wait a minute" is a lay thug.

Have you been made a "prince of the Church"?, asks Karlson.

As they're in the stands of this Roman Coliseum where lucid thoughts are nowhere to be found, feeding humanity to the lions, Mark DeFrancisis represents the court jesters who arrive on the scene to ridicule and taunt Catholics who have somehow managed to escape all the various forms of spiritual insanity roaming the Sanctuary looking to devour.

Are people actually accusing Bishops outright of failing to defend orthodoxy?

Oh Heavens, no. That would be a preposterous allegation.

Don't you know there's a broad interpretation of Catholic moral theology?

(The same "broad Catholic moral theology" DeFrancisis used to get on board Catholics for Obama)

Realizing he had an educated person on his hands, unable to make headway with logic, DeFrancisis went back to his respectful gentleman bag of tricks, made presumptions about my spirituality, uses the word "zealotry" as though it's a bad thing, incredulously after a Savoir who hangs from a Crucifix and 2000 years of martyrdom, implies we're ignorant that "friends" like him might hate us and therefor, we must have no friends at all and my personal favorite, we're mental:

Your zealotry is so becoming.

I am sure it wins many friends. Of course, you must save the Church, as I surmise you believe, so I should not worry about your friendships, as you think you have bigger fish to fry...

Oh..,the Church in all its glory is gathering here now...

You all are going to build such a civilization of love, aren’t you?...

Carol,

You need serious, serious help....

However, when the schoolyard bully was stood up to, and I debunked his talking points, he had a sissy moment and ran for the editors:

Tito,

Where is your moderatiing here?

This woman knows nothing about me, nor my faith’ and is on a complete rampage. She is veering towards complete hysteria.

I know nothing about HIM and his FAITH but he knows all about me.

Some people can dish out presumptuousness about other people's spirituality, ridicule commitments to the faith of the Church, it's teachings and the most vulnerable members in society, employ specious guilt by association - but they turn to jello when a mirror is held up to their own faces.

This dynamic has been intimidating faithful and Good Catholics from speaking up in the public square. Discouraging us, trying to make it appear as if Catholics are forbidden to get angry and unravel the "theology" of a Cardinal hiring people to kill other people and saying it's consistent with the Gospel of Life, trying to undermine our spirituality as repulsive to humanity or lacking in love and compassion, personally attacking to silence us.

I dont' think so boys. But hey, knock yourselves out trying.

FROM THE PASTOR
by Fr. George W. Rutler
March 22, 2009

Laetare Sunday, marking the midpoint in the path to Easter, is also a road sign to our eternal home. This is not escapism: to know that Heaven is the goal is a formula for making the best of our days on earth. To be “part way there” means that there is a there, unlike Gertrude Stein’s opinion of Oakland, California, that “there is no there there.”

Christ walked “up to Jerusalem” in order to go up to Heaven, and his cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem was his sign that he would also cleanse human minds and hearts to “go up” with him. The mind and heart, that is, the intellect and will, compose the soul, with the intellect consisting of the imagination and reason. Our Lord cleanses by being “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” As the Way, he guides the imagination to a perception of eternity. As the Truth, he aids the reason to grasp the truth. As the Life, he guides the will to choose life. Just as corrupt men had defiled the Temple, Satan corrupts the soul: He would have us imagine things hellish instead of heavenly, and rationalize lies, and choose death. Baptism cleanses the soul of these corruptions, and Confession is a sort of regular maintenance for the cleansed soul.

Jesus knew of Heaven—“In my Father’s house are many mansions…” (John 14:2)—and so he becomes angry when the Temple, as an earthly sign of Heaven, is turned into a bourgeois marketplace. And that anger is also kindled when he sees sin defiling the human soul. As St. Paul says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…?” (1 Cor. 6:19). Christ’s wrath is always righteous because it focuses on evil. He never loses his temper: He finds it to cleanse corruption.

Divine anger is not a weakness of God, but a sign of his perfection. It is a sign of God’s love for those whom he does not want to lose along the way. Another sign of God’s love is his tears, as when he wept for Lazarus and for all Jerusalem that would be gathered to him. As his sons and daughters, we have the gift of holy anger which is destructive only when we “lose our temper.” The solution is to find it, and that we do when we confess our sins, directing our anger at the Prince of Lies. Along with this confession comes the gift of tears, of which man alone among all creatures can shed, for the human being is not made for this world alone: “Our immortality/Flows thro’ each tear—sounds in each sigh.”

Divine wrath saves us from losing our temper and wasting our tears. “The wrath of God is revealed from Heaven…” (Romans 1:18). And it is revealed from Heaven so that we might arrive there.
